Why only bipeds?

EisdracheEisdrache Member UncommonPosts: 41

Since left Istaria (Horizons) due to a lack of players, I tried several free or trial MMOs. But everywhere its the same:

Only HUMANS, Elves, Dwarves, Orks, maybe godd and bad one though, but thats it!

In Horizons we had Dragons, Sslik (reptile creatures), Dryads (butterflylikes), fiends (blue devils), gnomes, half-giants, Saris (catlikes), Satyr and of course dragons, elves and dwarves.

Why arent there other games with player creatures like, unicorns, pegasi, wolves, griffins or other really fantastic stuff. There are more than enough humens on earth, why let them rule even fantastic realms?

Play EQII and Vanguard...both have many other non-human type of races!

  • EisdracheEisdrache Member UncommonPosts: 41

Eh... non-human... ok... but still only bipeds. Nothing with wings, running on 4 legs or something similar fantastic. Only humans in another shape, though.

Hey now, come play EVE, where everyone is a, pod.

I tried EVE, but as I am a pilot in real life that kind of steering is absolutely inacceptable.

Hey now... we're still trying to get a new MMO that actually is designed outside of the generic and overdone level-based model... your just asking for too much now.

Would be nice, but the best options I have seen are at least in the form of other species that look at least different from human.  W.E.L.L. Online if it ever surfaces is to have some really unique races, but if I remember they too were all bipeds as well.  Then of course there are games where you can "morph" into another animal but nothing permanent.

I too wish there were more options my friend, let me know when you find one.

Yes, it DOES matter, as I am a roleplay gamer and not interested in killing 10 rats, then 20 rats and then 100 rats and so on. For me there is more in a game than leveling and questing. And that depends on what you are. When iam playing a dragon, i do not behave as human. It is a difference, because being a elf acting like a Unicorn would not make any sense.

As a dragon u could kill 10 rats, if u were hungry, your kill 10 rats and 20 rats qusts would come in quite handy.  You dragons are more like Humans than you relaise:).

So you would find it fun prancing around as a snail or as a horse all day in an mmo?.

Well I don't believe he was looking to be those specific kinds of creatures, but looking towards a MMO that carried a bit more creativity in its playable races.  I for one would be interested in playing something different than the standard human frame.  They just don't make 'em like they used too.

  • EisdracheEisdrache Member UncommonPosts: 41

Neither Snail nor horse are quite fantastic, huh?

Being a flying horse, populating flying cities, casting strong wind and/or weather magic to protect their realms, would possibly a thing I'd like to play. If able to carry another (elven?) fighter on "my" back would give such an idea much more life.

I think it would be interesting to have a choice of playing a merman from atlantis, or a Centaur character right of the ancient greek days.  Or even maybe a sphinx-type creature race, or snakeperson-type (no legs like a Naga type).  Could be interesting, who knows.

    You got it, Hidden!

There are many possibilities already written in legends and tales or manifested in religions. So why always the same humanalikes killing everything that is not like them? We have this in reality right? I am tired of this.

Yeah, some half-HUMAN hybrid because, let's face it, snails and horses can't swordfight or use pewpew magic.

To OP: Maybe try a Magus in WAR. The disc he rides on is actually a living, breathing Daemon that has fused himself with the Magus, making the human not completely human anymore.

How do you know what a dragon or a unicorn is supposed to act like?  If it's realism you're after, I mean.

I do not restrict Marti. I widen my experience. Why do you think walking on 2 legs would give more possibilities? Maybe you should not deny brain nor wisdom for 4 or evene more legged creatures? Remember, I am talking about fantastic realms, not about the real world. And for dragons, you should take into account that their wisdom and intelligence is several times greater than that of any human being.

    who says they cant?

Well anything is possible but horses clenching swords in their teeth and trying to use them to fight with and snails shooting laser beams from their eyestalks is generally accepted as being "ridiculous".

You could play Lord of the Rings. After you get a character to level 10 you can make a spider or wolf character in the monster play option.

Another argument is that non-bipedal character classes can open up possibilties to the writers, giving way to more creative freedom.  One could argue that sticking to bi-pedal forms of life, a story-teller may infact be restricting his/her imagination due to past psychological imprinting of what "bi-pedal" conjures subconciously.

Why not have an MMO that offers up more then just bi-pedal.  Give the user the choice of diversity rather then just one mode of existence.

Its not realism I am after. Its fantasy! Realistic fantasy though. And as marty said: Who says a fourlegged being could not have magic? Its shown in several games already. e.g. Winterwolves in AD&D based baldurs gate had a mighty icebreath. Ans i am shure you all know monsters with strong defenses or attacks. Why not play them? Not much different from city of heroes/city of villians, but just fantasy not super hero genre.

  • Death1942Death1942 Member UncommonPosts: 2,587

closest i think you will get currently is Darkfall and one of the races (a wolf thing) can run on all four paws and is their replacement for a mount.  While i have yet to hear if this feature has been turned on/implemented i would say it should not be the only reason why you would play.

I dont think many MMO's will ever go down the creative races part any time soon as (from a programming and moddelling perspective) it's much easier to create and animate many humaniod type creatures (esentially copy paste then modify) than it is to create a mixure of humandoid and non humandoid creatures.  Before anyone points out that there are already creatures like that in games, that is true but characters use far more animations and put on armour and weapons, making them more complex than NPC monsters.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

I agree, we should be allowed to play other races besides bipeds... like mopeds for instance.

Yes I agree, and anothe r idea that works well with the them on non-bipeds; Sci-fi... imagine playing an insectoid preying mantis lifeform, or reptilian, and further an intelligent gelatinous blob as your main character.  What storylines, ideas, spring up for these new archtypes.

  • EisdracheEisdrache Member UncommonPosts: 41

Your are right. I am really waiting for Darkfall. Its not much, but it seems to have a wide range of possibilities and although the mahirim are bipeds aswell it might be possible to play the wolf like behaviour aswell.

I really hope they have a good concept for the rest of the game. Its not, what I dream of, but seems to be somewhat different from all this grinding and slaying stuff BECAUSE of open PvP. You will need to build relationsships exceeding that "looking for dungeon party" stuff.

    This.

Basically imagine being able to play all those cool monsters... that have been modeled up for us to kill over the years.  Master of Orion, an old school game reminds me of the various forms of life that could be considered for a true sci-fantasy setting.

I am all down for a spider/human race.  (If you can't handle the animated breasts, I apologize.)

Imagine MOO as a sandbox RvR/PvP game in which each race strives to exterminate all the others... at which point the server would reset. Meaningful PvP.  After your race is eliminated - you either roll a different race or become a pirate with permadeath hanging over the toon... until server reset at least.

See that's what I'm talking about.  The option to play a race that is different than ourselves.  That's fantasy right there!
