I know that in EQ,EQ2 beta, and even L2 I got a sense that I am actually putting time and effort into making a solid character because of the difficulty of the level grind and the fact that it actually takes time and effort to make progress. For example, Diablo 2, levelling in that game was extremely fast and easy which, for me anyway, detracted away from the value of my characters. I really did't care about them as I could always make new characters and get high levels within a few days. Is this how it is in WoW?

You felt like an individual in L2? I felt like I was there in a crowd just like everyone else.
But anyway, more to the point. I started feeling connected to my character after the hours I put into creating him. The role I played in the groups I was with and what I did while soloing made me feel like my character was worth all of the work I had put into it.
Your character doesn't really age. Doesn't look older, or start acting wiser, but the game still makes it feel like you are actually evolving your character.
I've played both stress tests, and i must say im dissapointed for this exact reason. I dont think there really is any charecter customization when creating a charecter or leveling with WoW, Leveling in WoW for me is very easy and fast, and i didn't see any need to group at all. Very similar to D2 imo. It's still a cool game, but more geared toward new mmo players i think. Since this is blizzard's 1st mmo that makes sense i guess.

First, there are the Racial Talents.
Second, there are, let's call them, charcter talents. Once you hit level 10 you begin accumulating Talent Points everytime you level. You can then spend those points on passive and some active character enhancements. This permits huge character customization, just as in D2. You could, for example, have a warrior based on defensive or a powerhouse based on offensive, fury, skills.
Third, some classes can select which types of weapons they wish to use as their primary & secondary.
Fourth, you have several trade and secondary skills to choose from.
Looks become more customizable as you get to a higher level.
With all this I think you will feel a sense of reward for spending time on your character.
