Although it's only in Alpha testing, they stated like in the two articles above, PvP will be obviously between Sith and Republic. How much of a role you see it in-game is yet to be seen however.
I hope the PVP will have a point to it. There's nothing worse than meaningless PVP other than meaningless PVP that try to hide the fact that its meaningless by offering useless cosmetic rewards that have zero impact. Ganking for ranking isnt SW. Trading Battle Objectives with the enemy for rank isnt SW. After all these years of waiting..can we finially have a war? Too much to ask from a star WARS game? Probably.
capture the flag lol.
See you in the dream.. The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.

Amen to that Fikus. I would love to see territory change hands and it have an overall effect on the game world and players. Like say the sith get a hold of a planet or even just an area and the longer they hold it the harder it becomes to take it back IE more and tougher beasts inhabit it and the areas turn dark and dismal with evil and such Or the jedi hold it and everything flourishes and gets all shiny happy people. . A real transformation you can see and feel.
Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.

Whenever someone brings up meaningful PvP I feel I am obliged to give my opinion on the matter. It started back in the glory days of World of Warcraft; back before battlegrounds were implemented. It was then when you could find hundreds of players in the Hillsbrad Foothills raping each others faces and what not, trying to take control of each others towns (Tarren Mill for Horde, Southshore for Alliance).
You did not actually take over the town and eventually the opposite faction would kick you out with their guard's help, but it was a momentary enthrallment and really it was without much point. You did not get anything other than the enjoyment of killing your opponents. And so eventually Battlegrounds were implemented and in time the Arena as well. Now the point of PvP is to get [EPIXZ!] and get your rating as high as possible so you can show off how big your ePeen is.
Personally, I find WoW's PvP to be utter crap now. When once there was no point to PvP, I had a blast. Now, it feels like a job. Not because it is more difficult to be "good," but because I am no longer seeing the point to get the gear to achieve that goal. I liked what WAR has done with RvR as it reminds me of the good ol' days in Hillsbrad, and I hope SW:TOR has something of the sorts but with more permanent effects, possibly even a war as you mentioned over a planet perhaps. But I hope Bioware steers clear of the "PvP for EPIXZ" system. In my opinion, it turns PvP into a job rather than something to do to for fun.

The day that game is released is the day I put the nail in the coffin of my social life.
As long as the PvP is open world and not instanced arenas/battegrounds/scenarios i will be happy. Maybe have a dueling 1v1 arena in cantinas where people can bet on the fight and its done for for fun and bragging rights.

Too much to ask for?
PVP for gear is even worse than meaningless pvp..you are right there. War is ok pvp, but you still had to grind rank. There were times when we would just avoid the enemy and take Battle objectives to grind rank. It wasnt anything close to giving you the feeling of war. Its was fun, but meaningless. Capture the flag lol. I dont want to pvp so I can make myself better....not again. Wishful dreaming for us i think. We'll be lucky if there is pvp like WARhammer.

That would be great. If the PVP/RVR were about strategic Military jump points and financial stability of your realm. Meaning if the The Galatic Republic was suffering to build an army, upgrade weapons or simply needed a military strategic point that you could fight for that world. Not only that, it would open up quests on that world. Or.. Even suggest that a certain world was occupied and needed a regime change.. I.E. The Sith Empire was causing havok and the planets originial inhabitants needed assistance. That would help the PVP/RVR idea and bring something a little different. RF online had a good idea of this but it fell short cause all it seemed you were fighting for was the mining spots.... LAME!

But if I lose in PvP, how will I feel like a hero?
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
even heroes die in battle
Die a hero or live long enough to become a villain.
Die a hero or live long enough to become a villain.
Yah, in your face Abrahmm!!! Just Kidding!
Die a hero or live long enough to become a villain.
props for an awesome quote
