Darkfall and (un)realistic expectations.

kishekishe Member UncommonPosts: 2,012

Most people wont realise that darkfall wont be able to competite with WAR, WoW, EQ2 or other mainstream mmos...even comparing it to those games is like comparing multi-billion hollywood masterpiece to amateur flick done by star wars hobbyist, computer graphic students

Mainstream MMOs are done with 50+ million budget, DFO was done with 10 million budget...that sets it in line with niche MMOs that usually end up with tens of thousands dedicated player base. (aka games like a tale in the desert)

It's a indy-game done by small company, if you let yourself be overhyped and expect same level of product as done by multi-billion corporation you'll be very disappointed and will most likely end up butthurt.

I expect this game to be like any other niche games out there and I expect it to be buggy, laggy and miss some features, but I'm still going to get it because I'm masochist and I love to cheer for the underdogs...aaand because i'm a dirty commie that loves to support tiny garage companies rather than give my monies to big money grubbing corporations like EA or SOE.

O no fuss on that one, wow bores me to tears, 3 hours is max about every 3 months and i find a reason to log.had hopes for darkfall. but not that hard up for a bad game.. Now trying to save some souls

OP: nothing will come close to WoW, you cant even associate it with WAR or EQ2. WoW's sub count is over 11 million active. WAR and EQ2 will be lucky to get close to 1 mill.

That said, DF can easily get up there with WAR... if its presented right. The chances are that the game will most likely pull an EVE. Start off small and grow from there. DF isnt trying to be a WoW killer, and I dont think anyone logically expects it to be.

Got a few people in my clan who are currently in the "Open Beta" and the game is running pretty well and there isn't a lot of bug and when they find one it is fixed in a matter of hours. So all I can read on your post is someone who speculate about something he doesn't know  much about.

Yes DarkFall  fail or not and as for the 10M budget, it's probably one of the reasons why it took so long to finally release it.  Then again people shouldn't overhype about it as they will then have unrealistic expectation and the game will fail if it happens. But since I only hear good things about the game right now, I doubt it will fail on the release.

Anyway, don't judge a game by how much money was invested in it. Judge it by the final result.

Now trying to save some souls?  I really don't think your going to be able to just come in and change the minds of thousands of people who have been waiting for it for years....

I don't know why you keep talking shit on the game as you have been doign all day it seems.  Why even bother coming to these forums?  And like I said last time in regards to your posts, no I am no DF fanboy, I think the game will be mediocore at best and will be waiting for Mortal myself.  I just don't get your reasoning in coming here and talking the shit you do about a game you apparently don't even know much about?  If you like trendy themepark MMO's then please go play them and talk to like minded people in those games forums.  Don't come here and bash the game and everyone who likes it it kinda makes you look immature...

Well, some low budget indie movies sold very well, like "The blair witch project", lousy movie though but a big succes.

You can make a big game with low budget as long as you have great programmers and aim to make the game fun, Guildwars have already proven that, it is the 2nd biggest selling western MMO.

Unfortunatley there is a big difference in experience and competence between Strain and Tasos, but there is still a chanse that DF can do good.

As I see it, DF will fall or not one one thing: Is it fun to play? Graphics are not impressing, many features are untested and might not be there. The release date is constantly being pushed back..

But all that wont matter if the game is fun. Guildwars is fun, that is why it's sold millions. I am doubtful that DF will be fun but we just have to wait and see.

Guildwars is boring as hell. It is as bad as D&DO with all the instancing. It sells well because of only one reason IT IS FREE TO PLAY!!!!!!!!!!

So is DnF going to be free to play? That is the only way I can see it selling thousands of copies.

    EPIC FAIL.

Guild Wars have a very  PvP. Thats imo the only reason to play guild wars.

You're pretty much right. But it will probably still be more fun to play than any mmoprg out right now.

Don't understand most of the reasoning in this post. This game is bringing back some of Ultima Online feel back to the maket. I think This game might actually grab thoes players that are interested in thoes kind of features and I honestly belive there is a market for it. It won't beat WoW I doubt anything will exception of Starcraft Online? Anyway I think to start with it will probably do better than WAR (300k subscribers and descending) or AoC which is more or less dead.

It would be too bad if there is a real (dare I say good) game under all this hype / counter hype. If only the animations didn't look like a demented goblin version of rock'm sock'm robots we might as a whole be willing to wait until the gameplay is really taken to pieces by professional reviewers and journalists before jumping to any conclusions about anything. Awell, leaks are leaks, good or bad.

Yeah, the animations suck. Hopefully, if they do alright after launch, they can put some money into re-tooling the animations.

Who cares about how big it gets. If it has enough people to support 1 server with a good community and enough funding to keep servers running without pulling the plug, then I am happy if I end up liking the game. Nobody who plays a game cares how it is perceived, as that is all trash invented by forums. The "So called status" Means nothing inside a mmo. I've played the 11million subscriber WoW and got to level 70 three times in it, and It is not my fondest of MMO's.

WoW may be big, but it is like one of those giant bulk durito/chip variety pack. You know the kind that have like 50 different type of chip bags in it but you only eat like 4 or 5 bags because those are the kind you like. DF is niche so it will present 110% to what "I" look for in a good mmorpg. I really don't care how anybody else thinks about it, because they don't have the same tastes as me.

I may sound like a fanboi, but thats far from the truth, I am a rabid for the sandbox theme, but because of that, I am very picky of the MMO I like, so I am also perhaps one of the most skeptical types of people their is. I guess it is a mix of optimism mixed with skepticism because I have seen plenty of MMO's fail me before.

From the what I've read in this thread, most people realize the game's downsides and upsides...
