Though I'd love to see an EQ3 done right-based around a rpg and repromoting the lost trait of adventure in mmorpgs I think it would never be big since when it would come to say classes of the game- it would be the same old, same old. Not to mention, it would be the old tank-healer-dps model that surely mmo fans have begun to tire.
I think if SoE were ever to do another Everquest a solo one would be interesting. All the crap and grind filtered out, just quests testament to it's lore and focused around the player might make it an enjoyable experience.
I don't see how it would be possible with the most likely irreparable damage WoW has done to the market in going for the lowest common denomiator braindead gameplay.
I think back to EQ:
* Running in terror at someone screaming "Griffing at store 2" and then sitting huddled next to other level 5ish chars in East Commons in complete terror.
* Those peaceful rides on boats looking out at the insanely red giants off on mysterious island or sitting around the docs waiting for a boat and making friends or just chatting with other players
* The epic low level Freeport to Qeynos(or vice versa) runs and the absolute thrill of actually surviving the half hour run
* Sitting deep, very deep, in the perfect group in Sebilis with the absolute minimal and precise communication with the constant knowledge that one bad pull, missed snare, etc. would result in a wipe. And the utter thrill of just how bad ass we were pulling it off and making it out all alive with our pockets full of incredible loot that no one else could get without all that hard work
None of that will ever be possible again. Any new EQ would most likely just end up being some braindead massmarket WoW clone with and EQ skin on top of it.
5 years down the road EQ3 could fly but not today especially with both EQ1 & EQ2 going.
It'll take some time for the candy store / Theme Park MMO to fall out of fashion. Not to mention for an EQ3 to thrive it would still have to harness the challenge and complexity of EQ1 only minus the time sinks and camps.
Vanguard tried EQ2.5 and it didn't go over too well. The real world in 2009 is far too busy to travel on virtual boats for 20 minutes or sit on one camp for hours.
Could you imagine playing EQ1 with WoW's graphics engine, I know it has a cartoon appeal but I believe it would work very well indeed and still require only a lower spec PC than your more modern MMO's.
I know I would definately resubscribe if they adopted a much more fluid and more colourful graphics engine than the one currently used, it would breath new life into the game and you can't deny that this game has more content than you can shake a stick at, in fact I would say it's probably one of the reasons new players just can't get into the game, established guilds aren't prepared to visit old world content with 15 expansions released.
It's a really shame that EQ1 has been overlooked when it comes to a complete graphics overhaul that would bring it up-to-date, even the graphics updates that have happened over the years still leave the game with clunky movement and alot of lag issues.
Play around with what they have and improve it rather than make something new.
They need to re-release EQ1 with new graphics. Start from the original game, have it with new graphics, and re-release it as a new game.
I compleatly agree.
But I think that you need to get rid of the top management in SOE for this to happen.
Possibly Sony Japan cleans house with SOE.
You can only hope though.
Agree about re doing eq1 with new graphics. Also keep it as it was in the begining with the full looting and grind for lvl's without a crap load of quests to get max lvl in a week like wow and such. Just release it as was style play...... Please
Those are three games which although more similar to each other than say AoC, WAR and WoW are still quite distinctive. This process has been gone though before, when EQ2 was created and when Vanguard was created. A new attempt would yield similar results. But you can see from the number of replies people are interested, but that alone won’t create a great new MMO.
If removing SoE is so important, would you be happy with the three MMO’s as they are if SoE was removed from the picture?

Smedley just have to go and then maybe SOE can become a good company.

I understand alot of the anger against SOE with some of its decisions... but people don't understand that SOE wasn't the cause of some problems. Alot of the hatred given towards SOE is truly unwanted with the exception of the "elite" group of SWG players who saw a good game torn apart. As far as Vanguard goes... it was not a SOE property until it was purchased after its complete and utter failure of a launch. SOE has done nothing but taken a terrible product that was Vanguard and has made it somewhat playable and functional.
Now could SOE do more for Vanguard? Yes.
Will they? No.
SOE also has made significant upgrades, additions and polish to EQ2 over the years and in comparison to other quest based MMO's, I have yet to find a better game. My only gripe with SOE is the addition of RMT in EQ2, but other than that I could care less as I don't participate in such transfers. While I can't say that I have approved every decision, SOE has done alot more for its games and communities than I have seen other companies do sad to say.
I guess a better question to ask here if not SOE then who?

Someday it will happen. And it will suck.

worst thing with EQ's graphic engine is you can look right through walls.
