oh the nostalgia

November 2003.  15 years of age, loved video games.

At age 10 or so I played and won Video and Arcade top 10, a mildly popular ontario based gameshow for videogames. I won at Donkey Kong Country 3.  I got to stick my hand in the thingy and i won some freaking Don Cherry movies. waste of life those were.

I'd loved final fantasy all my life, and Final Fantasy XI came out so i said hey an online game thats not Diablo II lets try it out.

I looked up no forums... I watched no advertisements, I didnt even know it had been released, i saw it on the shelf said hey look final fantasy, bought it the next morning when 'electronics boutique' (Now EB GAMES) just opened.

I had never played a game like it before, I logged into a world having no clue what the controls were, how to talk to people, where to go, what I'm doing, what the point of it all is. You get lost in the first town and you don't know how to cry for help.

You find yuor way out of the town zone (Whats a zone?) (What town? How many towns are there? Who made the town? What this button do?) and you walk up to a monster, you ofcourse use the mouse to click not knowing that tab will do it for you, and struggle trying to find how to attack.

You die.

You see in the chat thingy that you were facing the wrong direction... who'da thunk it eh?

you see someone else go by you and they say hello, wheres the Quadavs? and i figure out how to respond. "hi"  "what?"  "dunno man, how do you level up?"

I thought the game was stupid, i didn't even know what i was doing, but i logged in the next day anyways.

I logged in again.. again.

I played for 3 years. Everyday.

I await the day I experience this again, I will miss it dearly.

You can't have more than one first MMORPG.

My first experiences were a few brief seconds of the first Nintendo mario, then playing through Earthbound SNES.  what a shame though is that my first mmorpg was runescape..  then I got guild wars and OH my GOSH! at the time I had already been playing WoW but from day 1 when I logged into the WoW world on an orc I was unimpressed.  The textures were ugly the terrain was bland and practively ever member of the horde had some severe back problems, not to mentions that orcs were ugly..totally unimpressed I was.  Not to mention that the auto attack made me so bored in each fight as I was used to playing counter strike, soul caliber (GC version), Killer instince, Zelda, and various other nintendo titles..I just h8d auto attack.  Since then i've been trying to find other games that dont' relly on you auto attacking then waiting for skills to reacharge.

In truth the only reason I find the auto attack in GW bearable is because I use a sort of balanced build with the only healing trap, a damage trap, and a short cd interupt besides to offensive skills..I have it just right so I never have to stop moving, i'm always going to a new teammate to lay down my heal move or to a mob to blind it then cripple his butt ha ha..it's somuch fun.

Oh nastalgia..right..Links Awakening original Game Boy!!

UO was my first MMO experience.

I'd been playing Ultima games for a while and was enjoying the latest (Pagan, I think it was) when I heard about Ultima Online. Had to check it out .. first day, ganked three times and made a friend that I still send christmas cards ~10 years later.

    It's a funny old world.

LOL, first time was EQ , waliked out the gate of qeynos and the music played.. then this dark elf came to the gate and ahigher level cleric showed up and told him to leave this area , he was not welcomed. they rped a bit and he left, .. took me a min to ask the cleric why i was not leveling anymore, .. found out about de-leveling then i died so much is why i was not leveling hehe

I would love to get the thrill I felt during my EQ time (played for 4 years). Big part is how ruined communities are now and everyone wants to solo 24/7. Except in FFXI, loved playing that too.

Newmeanie's post reflects my first foray into graphical MMORPGS, via Everquest.  I was astounded, and had all the excitement and bafflement he describes.  When I clicked on a character sitting on a bridge, I was amazed to find out it was another player, who cast a spell called "Spirit of the Wolf" on me.  I had not the faintest idea what it did, but thanked them profusely!

I made another character almost straight away, picking one of the "evil" races, a Dark Elf, only to find myself in Neriak, one of the most confusingly constructed towns I have ever seen, in ANY game, heh.  Like Newmeanie, it must have taken me a couple of hours to find my way out, and my heart sank at the thought I'd have to head back into the labyrinth to train.

When my Druid got her first group Teleport spell, I felt I was a gaming god, lol.

    Happy days....

The sad thing about MMO's are that the first time you play them, its the greatest feeling ever. I remember when I first played EQ and was so happy with so much new things to do. Now, we want that feeling again but can never get it. It's like a pot head is trying to get that first time high again but never will.
