i ve been playing various mmos for around 5 years now but i ve got to a point where i think its time for a break until something interesting happens in the mmo market again .
warcraft was fun to start with and i ve returned to it for each expansion but recently i ve found the class imbalances and lag have really destroyed the pvp endgame .
guild wars looked nice but i found it a little to easy and it got boring quickly .
lord of the rings online was a nice pve rpg title but i had problems with turbines billing system who continued to charge me after i d cancelled . ( i also found d and ds dungeon hack to be very dull )
vanguard . age of conan and tabula rasa were titles i d looked forward to but upon release both were massive let downs .
city of heros/villians was nice given it offered something different from the tolkienesque fantasy worlds but its not something i d want to play for months on end .
warhammer although i find it to be a lot of fun for the odd months pvp lacks any kind of viable game world . its essentially team fortress with a little pve thrown in for good measure .
i ve also tried some of the free to play games with have varying degrees of quality but i ve yet to find one that offers something that would grab me long term .
i m glad some of the new mmos sean to be breaking with the traditional fantasy setting . the likes of dcu , champions online , starwars kotor and stargate worlds might offer a breath of fresh air . but unfortunatly so many mmos are crushed under warcrafts jack boots . it does seam the mmo market is pretty stale at the moment .
i m going to give the eve 21 day trial a go because i m hoping it may offer something the other games dont . other than that its back to single player games and multiplayer fps for me at least untill the next generation of mmos comes along ,but i dont think thats going to happen anytime soon .

I say wait about 5 years and im sure the MMO market will be much better. Especially consoles by then should be able to make their MMO's as well. That ought to be very interesting market to see.
Smarter than the average bear? That is assuming bears are smart.
Totally agree that the games will get better in time. I think I will be back to MMOs when the star wars/star trek and fallen earth mmos are released. Right now, there isnt a whole lot that entertains me. Im back on the consoles till then.
I feel the same way. Im waiting for champions online now to see how that turns out. In the meantime its off to other genres and single player stuff.
For an online fix I have dungeon runners and atlantica online installed, but other than that I cant bring myself to grind through another boring unfinished game.
I feel the same way.My usual weekend morning would be,get up eat something fast, game all day and all night. Now its get up,eat, check the vn boards for something new, mess with facebook a bit and check my emails.
I would be willing to try an older game like eve or ultimate online if they would open a new server.I feel folks would just have to far an advange for someone new on an old server.
This is a great step in the right direction for "daoc" if they can get "origins" going(new simple server, with out all the complex expansions).Granted in a few weeks you will have the good players way ahead,BUT,there would also be alot folks in the same boat I am...I just feel alot of these games just dont communicate well with there player base. Some do ok,eq2 and wow from what I hear, but, most do not.
Im currently canceled with daoc, its a great game, but,im tierd of being treated like crap.So I am mmo'less atm and looking for something, just dont know what.I guess I can start a whole new era with daoc if they can get origins out, without screwing that up...
Nothing really works,if it does work,it wont work for long,if it keeps working, they will discontinue it...

If EVE opened a new server countless people would jump on that bandwagon, but it breaks the philosophy of one universe within which we are all effected, which I wouldn't want to see broken up. Seems ironic though that a game that broke so far away from the mmorpg normality is on the brink of aiming towards introducing more NPC content and more challenging PVE elements. Maby a new EVE server is on the horizon, if the new expansion is any indicator.
On topic, disillusion is a constant state of mmo industry, everyone wants something from their game that is being provided by another. It is a matter of people simply realising it doesn't matter if the game you are playing is fun, or if it is the next big thing. If your having fun, who cares, find a game you like and play it, the rest of the world can go suck a tail pipe. Everyone wants to get in on the next WOW when everyone else is on the ground floor along with them, and the result is a weak, indecisive market trying to be the next big thing or else.

I feel yea mate. The past 2-3 years has sucked big time for MMOs. Unfortunately for me I need a gaming timesink (I'm addicted) and console games and PC FPS/RTS can never hold me for longer then a couple weeks (Currently I am rapezoring with Orkz in DoW2 *33* true skill baby /flex, fun as hell).
So i'll keep my subscription with WAR and do what I can to keep myself entertained.
I am looking forward to Aion, however which is on the not so bleak horizon. According to my pal in Asianland the games is amazing.
Same here OP. I have pretty much given up on MMORPG's all together. They are lame, cookie cutter, borefest for the gaming impaired. Seriously...if you were around back durng the days of oldschool Asheron's Call Darktide(before the cheats and hacks ruined it) or the old days of Planetside, when we'd have 1,000+ players fighting it out on Oshur for bases, or oldschool DAoC (the first 6 months), or old school UO, those were the days of some challenging game play. ::sigh::
Well, one thing is for sure, and that is that Eve isn't like any other mmo out there. There's a lot of good stuff in Eve, but it really comes down to whether it's a good fit for the player. Can you deal with possibly getting your ship blown up and losing everything you have? Is space-only combat acceptable to you? Does leveling via time, not effort, appeal to you? Does the prospect of working in very large groups, guilds, and alliances appeal to you? Do you mind lots of time traveling? There's just so much that is unique to Eve that it just takes too long to list.
Yet, despite all that makes Eve different, it is not a good fit for me. I don't like the very long travel times, particularly when moving multiple ships (some of which are very slow which can make it up to an hour plus to move from one station and agent to the other). I don't really have the time to invest in a corp and really contribute in a meaningful way. I feel restrained by the specific designs of itemization, and the inability of a crafter to differentiate him/herself from another crafter (e.g. any single ship made by any player is exactly the same, no itemization differentiation ala SWG material qualities). There's lots of other things that turn me off from Eve, but I hope that you give it a shot and see if it's a good fit for you. If it is, you may well be finding a mmo that can give you a rewarding and exciting home for many years to come. It's that big.
I never could get into Eve. Everything you mentioned that you hate...I hate. You know what I like. Ever play Planetside? OMG...that game had me hooked for 3.5+ years of my gaming life. We had a blast playing that game. I use to run with the 4475th Ranger Elite and we whooped major arse in our day. We had some of the most skilled players ever. We played as a team and we all knew our jobs. It took teamwork and skill to play at the level we had achieved.
I'm sorry...I think the OP posted this in the wrong forum.
General forums would have been a better choice.

Guys! I'm hopelessly lost in a mountain of mole hills! Them damn moles!
It wouldn't suprise me mate, there were over 50,000 people online tonight.
ya sry, didn't realize the one universe thing, never played eve before...

CCP will never shard the EvE Online server.(Tranquility)
To do so would violate a core tenant of their game philosophy.
EvE O is the orphanage of the MMORPG playerbase.
We are one big "dysfunctional" family.
And we are always adopting.
Once you hit the jaded phase with MMO's there's nothing like settling down and getting through all those great single player games you passed upon whilst you were in your honeymoon period for MMO's. Everybody goes through the discovery of MMO's phase, then the play allot period where they laugh at the idea of single player games, then to the jaded phase and rediscovery of single player games and the realization nothing can replace the experiences like a classic hit single player game. Everybody's getting jaded with MMO's because the industry spitting out the same ideas for far too long chasing the 11 millions subs too.
Yep, I agree with the overall theme here. However, I've been playing the genre since text-based MUDs in the early 90s. I wish I could get something a little bit more like the MUDs but with graphics. Considering that these were pioneering games and highly experimental (people who ran them were volunteers and a lot were university students in computer science), they were extremely involved idea-wise to the point that they actually beat the commercial MMOs. Unfortunately, I don't know if they will ever be topped by commercial game companies.
The main thing though about the old MUDs is that they were insanely challenging. The earliest ones I played were extremely harsh and the learning curves were steep. The great thing though is that these two aspects fostered great game communities. The MUDs were never as mainstream as even EQ and UO but ties between the few players who played were very tight.
Back in EvE. Started with BatMUD. Main MMOs have been EvE and DAoC.
I love immersion... but I'm just not feeling it in the MMO genre anymore. Could be that I'm jaded and just filled to the brim (4-5 MMOs over the last 5 years myself). But it all feels so much like the same thing over and over. And it's stretched... like they are trying to get too much time out of it; ala, keep me playing as long as possible to get the x per month.
WAR was my last MMO, until something changes. And for me, that means 4 accounts (myself and 3 sons). We had instant group, did PQs, pvp, etc. The game is over in a month or so; unless we just sit down like rain man and click click click for hours to get .... something, I don't know what...
Since we quit, I've dived into numerous single player games, all pretty fun. You load em up, play over a few weekends, and if you take your time, you are spending maybe a little more than 15/mo. Several good ones out there: farcry2, fallout3, deadspace, bioshock, gta4, masseffect, kotor series, nwn2.... get em cheaper after they've been out a while, and you are getting good new content for a little more than 15/mo. immersive stuff.
MMOs need to drop this 15/mo dogma. Tabula Rasa is free this month... good game for free. Two of my kids are loving it... for free. MAYBE it might be worth 5/mo? But can they do that? ooo nooo. WoW charges 15/mo, so we have to as well... oh wait, oops... not enough subs, so let's just SHUT IT DOWN?! unbelievable. I would fork out 20/mo for us all to play... but I'm not paying 60/mo... for anything on the market (including wow). It's just too boring for that kind of money. I hear people argue "15/mo isn't that big of a deal"... well duh, of course. But these are SOCIAL games, and as such, usually involve multiple RL friends or family, meaning 30, 45, or even 60/mo. So YES, there IS a big freakin difference between 5/mo and 15/mo PER.... MMOs today are just not worth it...
This is something that happens with all gamers, I believe. I know that after the dumbing down of UO I was more or less lost for an mmo, at least until SWG came out. Then there was a long break after the destruction of that game where I tried a number of games but nothing has held me for too long. Warhammer has actually held me a bit longer but its starting to grow old on me and I find myself looking ever so forward to games like The Old Republic, Star Trek Online, and Champions Online. Hoping one of those will be able to provide the years of entertainment that I had gotten from other titles.

I haven't given up on mmos but they sure have been pretty average since 2005. I think last year broke the camels back for me when so much hype and promise was made for AOC and Warhammer that both really disappointed alot of people. Now I pretty much play single player games and Guild Wars until better games come along. Personally I am really looking forward to Champions Online. I think it will suprise alot of people in a good way,
Yeh I havn't gotten into an mmorpg since SWG was ruined because nothing has ever offered as much as that game did. Some have come close like EVE Online but the problem with that game is really the repetitive setting. For me there will be two mmorpgs which hold a special place in my heart but have since been ruined by SOE and they are:
- Planetside
- SWG
Vanguard isn't too bad. I've played the trial now and it seems better than the reputation it has. I'm going to get the game (75¢ new on amazon) and try the full version out.
If you are looking for something that is different then it may not be for you.
Good luck in your search -- a lot of good games coming but I think the traditional layout will still be there will a different theme (slow migration away from fantasy).

Vanguard is 75 cents on amazon? Wowies! It has some really great features as I've always said, but a lot of bad ones. I think my favourite two aspects of Vanguard are its open world, which is hugggge, and the design of the character classes. I miss the character classes in that game. It had the possibilty of taking on the MUD legacy, but Sigil and SoE dropped the ball.
Back in EvE. Started with BatMUD. Main MMOs have been EvE and DAoC.
MMO's now are really horrible right now. It's sort of like back in the 80's when cars really were mostly all shit. It's not that no one knew how to make a good car it's just that they tried to make em cheap and make a lot of money off crappy products.
WoW and it's millions of subs got alot of people alot of capital to try and make something that would make tons of $$. Well all of them failed miserably. So now we have to wait for someone to decide they want to actually make a decent product instead of just making lousy rip off garbage. It hasn't happened yet but the first one to do it will have millions of customers pretty quick. There are alot of bored gamers playing crap games like wow for lack of anything better that runs well and gets updated regularly.
How old were you when you started playing and how old are you now? I ask this because for some time I felt the same thing but I came to the conclussion that it wasn't so much the MMO market as it was me and the general process of growing up. I started MMO's when I was about 22 and am now 29. Started with AO, moved to FFXI, then to WoW, then EQ2 then EVE then WAR. I never got the same enjoyment out of WoW, EQ2, EvE and WAR then I did out of AO and FFXI. But I also reliase that when I switched from FFXI to WoW was about the time I got a pretty decent job, got married, started playing disc golf and throwing in a couple dart leauges. I don't have the time to log in and play for 4 hours any more. I don't think it's the games. I think it's us.
-Currently looking forward to FFXIV
-Currently playing EvE and Global Agenda
I agree. This is an idea that I have been tossing around in my head. I am about two weeks away from turning thirty and I think my lack of finding an addicting fun MMO is because of that. I started playing about 11 years ago with The Realm and have progressed through many of the MMOs on the game list here. I can't seem to find anything to stick with like I used to. School, kids, work, it all starts to effect you.
In short, I think we are getting old.
I need to run off so I can cuss at some kids on my lawn...
It's gotten to the point where some MMOs have been reduced to little more than success dispensers. Don't think. Don't challenge yourself. Do as little as possible... but still be rewarded for it. Yeah.. *that's* fun.

I remeber one time last year I woke up on a saturday morning (It was spring time, about 65 degrees). Made myself my usuall morning pot of coffee, sat down at my desk and logged into EQ2. Looked out my home office window and decided "It's to bloody nice to be sitting in here playing EQ2, I am going to go out and do some trimming with the weed eater". That was about the time I knew that gaming in general had somehow gotten downgraded to 2nd rate hobby for me. I still liked it, it just didn't take precedence over other things anymore.
-Currently looking forward to FFXIV
-Currently playing EvE and Global Agenda
Yeah, I found myself doing the same thing. My solution was to find a decent free to play game that I didn't feel obligated to play and bink around on it every once in a while. I really would like to get the same enjoyment as before but I have come to the conclusion that I don't think I will.
There is a reason you never see older people playing Q-bert I suppose.
