Just another i need a game post, i guess i have different tastes than most since i cant find anyone asking for the same thing.
I want a game where dying matters. Basically asking for the worst death penalties of any game you might know. Things i care about:
Dying IS a BAD thing.(sick of games where i just die to get back to town faster since it really doesnt matter. or just having to fix my equipment when i die.. thats just stupid. Item loss i dont really care about either way.
Open PvP is best, i want to be able to kill people wherever(any game like this has safe areas but 95% of the world is pvp. I absolutely hate when pvp has to be accepted by both parties.
No lvl Cap (i like always being able to lvl up and have a better character)
Graphics really dont matter to me, and my computer can handle pretty much anything but i still play old 2d games because the gameplay is just better. Theres too many games that are geared towards casual gamers out there and you pretty much cant play anything for more than a year before you hit the lvl cap and start getting bored. None of the above are deal breakers except for the death penalty thing. losing 3% of my current lvl just wont do(archlord). it needs to really matter not to die.
Only game i have found like this is TIBIA i've been playing for somewhere around 6 years and its just time for something new. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated i've been searching for quite a while now.

Lineage 1 fits your description perfectly.
Exp loss upon death equal to 30 minutes - 1,5 hour of leveling.
Possibility to drop items upon death depending on alignment (Chaotic - Neutral - Lawful)
Open FFA PVP, only safezones are towns.
Noone has reached maximum level of 99 in this game yet, and it has been around for 8 years i think.
EVE Online maybe? There's low sec and high sec space, both well populated. There's only one server, about 30-50,000 people on at any given time. When you die you lose your ship and everything in it. If someone kills your ejected pod you then lose any skill points that your clone isn't covered for (like the first clone only have some 800,000 skill points covered. Which means if you die and had 1,000,000 skill points, you lose a good chunk of training time). It's quite a fun game as well. The PvP is awesome, one of my only reasons for staying apart from the friends i have playing.

Lineage 2 is similar with regards to death penalty I believe?
And seriously? You are not kidding? No one has reached the level cap yet? Wow. And I thought the xp-walls at 50 and 70 (? can't remember exactly, sorry) in L2 were extreme.....
im looking at shadow bane, and possible corum. I remember when lineage came out but never touched it. anyone know what kind of subscription prices these games have?
Keep the ideas coming, you guys have all been very helpful. I really do appreciate the help.
I'd say Lineage 2. FFA PVP outside towns with a chance to drop equipment when your defeated. If you have a bad karma score from ganking people then you have a high chance to drop your equipment when someone kills you. The biggest issue I had was farming for cash but I haven't played since chronicle 2 so it could be different now. Another downside is its well known for bots but they offer free trials and it really sounds liek the game your looking for.
Make games you want to play.

Awkward request but i'd have to say Runes of Magic. You don't want to die or you will have exp debt where you have to work it off. The higher level you are, the more debt you will receive. The PVP server (Grimdal) is completely open after level 15 (even in towns but watch for guards). Players killed will drop loot off their body or in inventory depending on your reputation. Level cap is 50 but you dual class so it's more like 100, it will rise soon since it's only in open beta and will go official in March. Just a suggestion, check it out, wouldn't hurt, plus it's free!
People are already bitching about RoM PVP because, basically, they want to be able to gank lowbies without the possibility of losing their l33t gear when people their level come and spank them.
Of course they don't put it that way, but you know that's what it is.
I love the death penalties in RoM. Their PVP system looks pretty cool so far. I got ganked by a high level red about 2 minutes after I hit 15th level. I can't wait till I'm high enough level to go out and hunt reds.
Have you tried Perfect World yet. There you have an experience loss and a chance to drop an item if you die from a mob. Also you can play on the PVP servers which allow pvp anywhere except in the cities (unless you are sneaky hehe) from lvl 30. There is a penalty for pvp, but some players see this more as a honour than a deterrence of having your name turn redder plus I know guys who's gear has come only from pvp. If you get hooked up with a good clan then you can go do TW (Territory Wars) as well which is a huge amount of fun and even more fun now that the servers are letting you fly in the TW arena so attacks can come from anywhere.
PW is also a long game, there is a lvl cap but takes ages to get there. I have played now for about 9 months and I'm lvl 84 and still got a long way to go. Trying to get the last lvl can take up to a year depending on how much you play.
It's f2p so if you don't like it then it has been no skin off your back.
A perfect game for you would be Darkfall when it comes out. It will have open PvP and a full loot system(lose all your stuff) but they also said gear isnt going to influence your characters power as much as say, WoW. I don't know about the level cap though.
For the mean time EvE is a great game for this. Takes a long time to get the money for good ships, and when you die, they are gone, everything in it gone. but also its a very complicated game for some people. Theres no level cap, or even levels for that matter, you justt train your skills all the time train train train train. you can pvp anywhere, but it systesm above a certain security (0.4) the npc fleets will wreak you unless your superman or spider tanking. Most of eve is low sector, about 70% is. 0.0 (the lowest security) has alliances fighitng for systems with some of the biggest ships in the game, hundreds of people on each side blowing eachother up. Its fun ;D ive been playign it for 3 years and I love it jsut to warn you, its a little slow paced when your noob. But just join an corp and youll be having fun in a matter of weeks
If you've bought insurance you won't be at a complete loss.

Indeed.
At any rate; Basic rule of thumb is "Don't fly anything you can't afford to lose"
I'm looking for the same although i am fine with a level cap. As long as the company releases new levels and content in timely and well tested manner.
Any MMO i have played that had a steep penalty for dying also had the most mature playerbased and also the most skilled. Everquest, Vanguard, CoH in the beginning. How i long for those days.

Dont need to tell me
Check out Face Of Mankind, CB starts this weekend.
There's perm death!
http://forum.fomportal.com
They got rid of the perm death in the relaunched game and made it F2P to increase the playerbase and keep the game from closeing down. :_(
Depending if you want a level grind or not:
Level grind - Lineage Ii for sure. Harsh FFA PvP with pretty severe XP penalty upon death on higher levels, as well as item loss upon death when you're PK (5 or more Pk's on count that is).
No level grind - Chronicles of Spellborn. The PeP system they use make you stronger over time and has a level 5 cap on it. Gaining PeP is hard, and when you die you loose a full level of PeP. Trust me, when you've hit lvl 3 PeP you'll do ANYTHING not to die again
Only problem with TCOS is the bad split up of regions...
Wow you're just like me!
played tibia from 2000-2005 my first mmo and the greatest too bad they don't make them like that anymore.
Good luck on your hunt.
When I posted yesterday, I knew there was a game with perm-death, but couldn't recall the name... Now I do: Shaiya (from Aria games).
IIFC, when you hit a certain level, you need to be ressed (can't go back to town anymore then) within <x> minutes or your toon is dead forever. And (even better), if you're high enough level you can start a new class that'll have perm death from level 1 enabled (unless they changed things severely since beta...)
Play Face of Mankind.
Contrary to a previous posters comment, permadeath will be more of a feature of the realaunched game than ever before. This is from the development update describing penalty point thresholds:
"Threshold 2 (yellow to red border)
Player can no longer buy new clones. He can still be cloned though if he has a stock of clones. If he runs out of clones, he will die permanently.
Threshold 3 (red to dark red border)
This is the highest stage and it’s almost impossible to survive. The player can no longer be cloned now. On the next death he will die permanently. This is really tough, since the bounties are now very high also and everybody can use the money to hunt him down."
For those unfamilar with the game, Penalty points are given for killing neutral or allied factions.
For those unfamiliar with the factions, there are 8 - some out for money, some full of lawless rouges, and some govornment agencies (like the law enforcement department, but we'll get onto them in a second).
All combat is PvP and there is also a considerable amount of skill involved - is the only FPS/MMORPG around that I know if. Not only that, but the game is entirely player run, so there is an incredibly complex and interesting political situation between factions and inside factions, as people fight for leadership and power. Technically the "level cap" is the leader of the faction (rank 7), but faction leaders are elected by the faction, so they have to maintain thier responsibility in a very difficult political climate.
Anyway, back to penalty points, if a law enforcement officer arrests a player with penalty points, he goes to a special prison (which is possible to raid if a high profile prisoner is inside), and works these off, but if they get too high then the player will reach the scenario quoted above.
Take a look at the forum to see if its for you, then subscribe on the website to the CB, or if you have any questions ask me here.
p.s. I do not work for the developers, I just am one of the many for whom this game is very special
I'd reccomend EVE. It's been around for a while, but is constantly being updated, refined, and having new content added. It's one of the only MMOs I've felt like I actually got my money's worth for, due to all the free expansions.
The death penalty can be harsh. There is insurance, but if your ship is well fitted, insurance will only cover a fraction of the cost. If you get podded, you'll lose any implants you have, which can be very expensive. Solo, small group, and large group PvP are all quite viable.
They have a free trial, of course, so give it a shot.
