Wizard101 is family friendly game with lots of young players and controls in place to protect those young players as much as possible.
That being said, anybody over 13 can use the free text chat (dictionary limited) if they're a subscriber. If you're not a subscriber you can't. I assume this is because trolls could create free accounts and cause trouble. Limiting non-paying players to emote-based chat elminates that problem.
I think you'd be surprised how many adults play Wizard101. KingsIsle was surprised when they did some surveys during beta and found quite a few "older" folks enjoyed the game. My entire family subscribes to Wizard101 and 3 of us 18+. The other two are 12 and 9 and we limit their chat through parental controls.
...it seems to be meant for younger players,...Does anyone know if only young people play this or also alot of 16>?
I know many adults that play this game, quite a few that are 40+, with some 50+ and 60+ also. The best part for some of us is that, in less we are in an instance area, we can jump on for a short period of time and complete a few tasks (or even partial tasks of the kill x number of x type of enemy). This is a nice break between "chores".
This game has become my new addiction. I played CoH for 4 years and found this game through the review that was posted here. I have tried many game, but always went back to CoH. This is the first game to get me "hooked". And, yes, I am an adult.
I'm just shy of 38, and I am enjoying it so far. My 11-year old son really loves it, too.
A good game is a good game, regardless of what age group it is aimed at. I'm actually really impressed, since most games that are supposedly aimed at kids are just stupid and boring, even for kids.
... This is where I draw the line: __________________.
I'm 18 and I love the game. It's different from the other MMO's I've played. I like that there really isn't any lag, and the download time of the game wasn't long at all!
I don't want to know the average age of people who play this game. I want to know the standard deviation. I'd bet that the percentages under 13 and over 30 are both far above industry averages, and having both extremes would lead to an unusually large standard deviation.
Why don't you just try it and see if you like the game rather than worrying about the "standard deviation" of age? It's a fun game and easy to get into.
I just started the game a few hours ago, im 28 and its very well done. I used to play Magic the gathering, so this is right up my alley Oh and the summons/speel animations are really cool.
I dont think its an age issue as much as an "MMO experience" issue. If you have never tried an MMO before---great! Wizard 101 is perfect! If you have only tried the 2D MMOs, great! Wizard 101 is your next big step into the 3D world.
Some people (no age discrimination) who have experience with popular MMOs may find Wizard 101 graphically simple, or get frustrated with turn-based combat. But overall, those who like to play often but not obsessively will really enjoy this game. I find it a refreshing change where the quests and tasks are doable, and I dont spend hours waiting for fellow guild members to log on, where I have to find someone who knows "THE" only strategy to kill that one boss, etc.

I think that analysis sells the game short, as if to say, it's only good if you don't compare it to anything else. Someone who has played a number of other games would be more likely to appreciate that it does some things differently, and isn't just another WoW-clone.
The line about 2D games is particularly bizarre. Most 3D games would have been better as 2D games. Unless you're really using all three dimensions (and I don't mean simple hills and jumping, as that was done in 2D games such as Crystalis just fine a couple decades ago), the only reason to go 3D is for the sake of fancy graphics--and that usually comes at the expense of gameplay to some degree.
This was just the opinion of my 8-year old daughter, who also plays "Lord of the Rings Online" weekly for the past year. She also loves Wizard 101 and plays both in the live and test realms.
She likes both games---for different reasons. As do I. But I only play a handful of MMOs and I've only been active on them for a few years now. Thanks for the voice of experience.
Ok, I surrender. You are probably right. This was just the opinion of my 8-year old daughter, who also plays "Lord of the Rings Online" weekly for the past year. Just to add to the discussion I am 43 and have played most MMO's. I currently am still playing AOC and LOTRO but I find myself gravitating back to Wiz 101 when I have some free time. It is fun and additctive. My son plays as well and it gives us one more thing to talk about. Also, I have been watching his reading skills improve (He is 6) so that is a big bonus.
Anyway, I think it is fun as well and plan to continue playing it.
I'm 32, been playing MMOs since Ultima Online and I'm loving it! I'm also loving the fact that my 4 year old likes to play it as well and I finally have someone in the house to play a MMO with. It is beyond impressive when a game that I enjoy comes along and is playable by my 4 year old daughter. Even though she can't read yet, the added voices and the pictures added to each quest makes it possible for her to play.
My hats off to KingsIsle for this one. Very well made game.
Well I am 52 and loving this little Gem of a game, have been a huge fan of Magic the Gathering for years but now its become too complex for my Ancient Gray Matter so this game is very cool to chillout with . Also playing quite a few other Mmo's at the mo but this one is a really nice change ! Thimbs Up
To be honest I'm yet to group with someone in Wizard 101 that I know to be a kid. The community as a whole is excellent and therefore I don't actually care whether or not it consists almost wholly of 10 year olds or not. The fact is that it's cool and I'm having fun.
They make it very clear that the game is geared towards children, though, so one can't expect any more.

That's primarily because they heavily filter the chat to prevent you from finding out whether someone is a kid. If someone tries to say, "I'm ten years old", the game will filter it.

That doesn't apply to groups, which is why I said "group with."

33 yrs old.
Game runs great and it is a ton of fun - light fun that does not interfere with your normal life/

You say that as though playing a game precludes one from wondering about the standard deviation of the age of those who play it.
No, he said that as though he thinks you're trying to learn esoteric information about the player demographics as a condition of trying the game.
Clearly your response indicates that is incorrect.
