I'd like to add a bit, too. Some weeks ago my girlfriend and me gave LotRO another try. And so far we are really happy.
Things I like:
Nice graphics. We both quite often just stopped and looked at the beatiful scenery. After the WoW comic style it's so refreshing! Also the armor looks very impressive. A hunter looks like a hunter and not some kind of Power Ranger Ultra Ninja or whatever.
Event though you will find the typicall "Kill X" and "Collect Y" quests most of the quests are very well done. And a main story! I like that.
Crafting seems to make sense. For example I can craft armor that has good stats and is useful. Also I like how crafting professions are inter-woven. It encourages trading.
Atmosphere! I think that many places have their own unique atmosphere. It really feels like a virtual world. Like all those musicans (real players) in Bree showing off their skills (or not , but still funny anyways). Any other players standing around them, listening, dancing or whatever.
Community. Since both my GF and me have a full time job we do not have that much time to play. But whenever we played LotRO we got into contact with new players. I remember once standing a bit outside of Bree, when a player passed me, then stopped, turned around and asked: Hey, shall we do some quests together? Actually one of the major reasons why I quit WoW was the community. Because WoW's community feels as if 95% of the playerbase consists of selfish brags.
Conjunctions. Very cool. Nice group dynamics.
Things I do not like:
Animations could be better. Not too bad but some lock a bit too stiff to me. Also they sometimes look a bit stange. Like my GF's bear sitting and spinning around on his a.. at the same time (because she runs around the bear). Or monsters running sideways or "swimming" over the ground (foot movement and actual movement out-of-sync).
UI sometimes feels a bit basic. For example the mail interface. Sending several attachments to your twink could be easier. But nothing game breaking.
Icons. First they are tiny. Especially on my 24" TFT. Second most of them are not very expressive. Again nothing game breaking. You'll get used to.
All in all I think it is a very nice game. Sure, it's not for every one. Especially not for the WoW PvP crowd or those who do not like social interactions. But that's ok. This way everyone can play what he/she likes to play. Peace.

Aye, I agree with some of the animations. Not too many though.
The mail interface is the most basic I've ever seen. The WoW mail is far superior in that it'll start to auto fill names. I actually have to keep a list of my alt names nearby because I sometimes forget what they are!
I feel your pain about the sizing. I've found that going to Options --> UI --> scroll to the bottom and there's a UI scale. This includes the toolbars, quest log, even the radar. True I could go down to a lower resolution, but it seems weird to not use the native resolution of the monitor.
Yup, please play what you like. I don't begrude my friends from playing WoW. Though they do look at me funny for playing LOTRO.
Yes. For all the reasions above, but its not for everyone, as it should be.

Currently downloaded Tutorial+Intro because I downloaded the US-Trial by mistake...the TDM is very neat (Turbine Download Manager), the feature that lets you play while you download is great.
Currently have a Level 6 Hobbit Minstrel on Landroval. Feel free to message me for a chat. The name's Haldas
I have played LotRO since beta as leader of Kindred Spirits on Gladden server and I have enjoyed the entire time. I never played WoW...OK I confess I played WoW briefly SWG and LotRO, but I left WoW before the LotRO beta even started. Anyhow, if I had been into WoW when LotRO came out, I would have certainly left WoW for LotRO...it's just that I left it before LOtRO hehe. Not that WoW is a terrible game, but it's MMO-lite.
I have been trying other games lately just to do something other than WOW and LOTRO was one I tried and I really thought it was good. I think it looks alot better than wow and runs just as smooth. I think I am burnt out on the whole idea of elves and dwarfs. I think I am gonna sink my teeth into EVE.

I don't think anyone said that Wows graphics were better than LOTROs, dx 10 really makes a big difference and Wow is older, a few years matters a lot for graphics.
I loved WoW, but after reaching endgame, there wasn't enough to keep me. Sure they have instances and battlegrounds, but in the end all of it reduces to repeating the same instance over and over again so you can get better equipment. I also didn't like the humongous raid tree that developed over time; having to get keys is extremely tedious if you're a casual player who doesn't have 6 hours a day to spend re-doing instances because of dropped party members or wipes.
In terms of game mechanics, Lotro is largely a more refined, more open (less restrictive) version of WoW. There isn't anything groundbreaking, but the game is very polished, and what makes the biggest difference IMO is that the game realizes very well the rich work of J.R.R. Tolkien. WoW builds on the warcraft universe which is cool, but you really can't compare it to the world that Tolkien created in middle-earth.
The one big thing Lotro has that WoW doesn't is a lifetime subscription. For me this was the tipping point, because as a casual player with a busy RL schedule, I enjoy the freedom of playing whenever I want, without the pressure of "trying to get my money's worth from the subscription".
I would really like to start playing LotrO full now, but i've got a question. I accidentally downloaded the US trial when I live in Europe. On the Turbine download manager I selected the big Need A Free Trial Subscription? Click Here! button. If I buy LotrO from a store and install the full game, would there be a way to upgrade my Trial Subscription to a regular one that would work with my Europe version of the game? (Seeing as I downloaded the US trial, I think probably not)
Or would it be easier to make a European account and use that for it?

My guess is that you need to use an account that pertains to the version you are using.
However, if you spoke with customer service or sent them a message they might be better able to help you as they might know more about their own accounts than us.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Or...would it be even simpler to download the full game via the Turbine Download Manager and then go onto MyAccount at Turbine.com and upgrade my subscription to a regular one from Trial/Guest? Anyone know if this would work, would be really helpful if you could tell me, thanks
Lotro is one of the best mmos in the market. (imo with Wow even i don't like this game, with DAOC or EvE) Lots of content, nice graphics and music, good storyline, nice community, polished game...
Forget War aoc and all the over hyped mmos (dfo tcos etc) take Lotro.
If you live in Europe you'll have to buy "Codemaster's" Lotro.

agree. Though to the OP: if you can find a buddy pass for WAR, you should try it. But for the love of God don't buy it til' you try it.
I've never been much of a WoW type player, so the gameplay of LotRO left me uninterested. But it is a beautiful world. And yes, pretty well polished.
They did what apparently every other A class MMO made in the past 3 years couldn't do. Deliver what they promised. The fact that they let you try it before you buy it proves it.
I just finished a trial with LOTR and i am planning to sub. I am also playing WOW.
I won't "leave" wow for LOTR but it will make a good 2nd MMORPG. I still don't know about the endgame of LOTRO but it will be a while before i get there.
