My thing on Vanguard Saga of Heroes

I remember when I was a little EQ1 player at the time of eq1's release, i was rather young for a MMO person, I was suggested to play everquest by a relative of mine, after bugging my mom about getting diablo 2. She is religious so you know how bloody Mature Rated games are. So my relative said "Dude you gotta try everquest, it is reallly really worth it, it is better than diablo 2." I thought to myself "Better...? Than Diablo 2?"

So we looked into everquest with my mom, and it had the rating of Teen. And my Mom gave me the okay to go buy it, so i remember bike riding to the store that was 3 miles away, and with my well saved money i bought Everquest as of 2000. When I first got onto Everquest, I made a Barbarian Warrior ((After the D2 barbarian of course)) The first thing I said to myself was "This game is weird.." The controls where nothing familiar to me, camp meant something, sit? How do you fight stuff? A letter? So i wandered around looking for the darn guy to give the letter to and lo and behold, i completed a quest, I was puzzled for a moment. But I remember when i was swimming to Halas the song of the water had me amazed, and felt enlightened in a sense. Then I figured out what camp meant "Log off" by pressing it, i thought it ment "build a camp." Oh I remember when during night time and in caves, my sight was blind as a bat. So I was annoyed by that but it was still a good experience.

The pure nostalgia when i was a kid playing Everquest during its glory days can never be dethroned by any other MMO experiences. Years later, in 05, i was grown up a bit, a teenage at the time, learned stuff, etc. Heard about Vanguard Saga of Heroes..and boy was i surprised. When I looked it up people said it was to be a remake of the glory days of everquest 1. And I thought to myself: What, a remake of Glory days Everquest 1?" So I looked up information on the game, and when i looked up the movies, i was amazed by the lush texture and graphics quality, they looked very very well done, but I told myself "This thing is gonna be a memory hogger, the specs are soo high it will most likely crash most average joe PCs." Atleast during that time. At 05-06 not everyone had Dual core processors and 2-3 gigs of DDR2 ram..most  had atleast 1 gig DDR400 or a 2.5-3.0 Gigahertz single core. I was surprised of the high demand of system requirements for the game. But I gave it a try, CLOSED BETA. When I was in Closed beta The game lagged really bad, the FPS was horrid, so i turned down the quality to Highest Perrformance. Even with everything on it's lowest setting, the game itself was still pretty, I can only imagine how it would look with everything on Highest Quality.

So I helped Sigil solve some of the major and mostly minor bugsduring Closed Beta. But the bugs i visited were fixed, but i noticed that they where fixed rather poorly. NPCs spamming text sometimes. NPCs spinning around at alarming rates. Galleons "foating" on land and through Khal's walls and getting the galleon stuck inside the crafting room, where it pushed most of the crafters inside the walls. Eyeballs for Vulmane popped out of their skulls. ((And the lattter never happened before)) Swimming through land ((That still exists to day)) And I noticed that even though they fixed one thing more problems arise. I was abhorred by the lack of effort they are doing to fix the game up when i reached the near eend of my Open Beta. Quests where broken, dungeons broken, items didnt work right. It was horrible, then the next few days when it was released i came on and noticed i still found the same bugs, I was angered by the cheap "put a bandaid on it" attempts on most of the bugged content. So I cancelled my subscription in pure anger, they ruined it. They are at fault. Who hired these guys who did a half assed, lazy job? I demand an answer!

That answer almost came when i noticed on the MMO news that SOE has bought Sigil Studios. And the first thing they did was fire most of the sigil staff. And I told myself "Serves them right for ruining a remake of Everquest." An experienced programmer friend of mine who started working for SOE showed me a piece of Vanguard coding, since he was there to read a part of it for them. I didnt get wehat the coding meant, but he explained it anyways. And the first thing he said, and i quote, was "These lazy fucking asswipes of programmers did a shitty clusterfuck of a job on the Vanguard Engine. The Coding is horribly done! It will take YEARS before we can even get the damn game hammered out and running smoothly" Pardon my language for i wanted to quote what he exactly said, plus he was a Vanguard Beta Player so He has a reason to be pissed off, and so was i.

So I came back 2 years later, and tried the 15 day free trial one ((Through an alternate account, i had soo many SOE accounts in the past I dont know half of them)) on my first SOE account that i had during its EQ glory days, the one i used for vanguard was an "updated" Account. Soo far It has gone smoothly, no huge problems soo far in the Isle, I will might reactivate my Vanguard Subscription. It seems to not crash my computer like it used to, So we will see how things are.

If you guys have any questions please MMORPG.com mail me instead of replying here.

If anyone has currently been playing Vanguard, and are on the mainland, can you tell me whats new and improved from release to now? Im sure it will be a large list but i just want the major ones.

if you are looking for a really interesting leveling experience  kojan is the best place to be after the trial island. There is an epic quest chain that leads to a weapon you won't be giving up for a while.  After that going to the koterie infinieum is where you can do a complete armor quest line ending in another extremely powerful weapon. When you can't group up for the quest chain  river valley is an amazingly awesome leveling area  at around 20 - 30.

Well, another 6 hours adventuring, tried 4 classes now. The bad news is that I found quite a few buggs, is it the trial island or the whole game?

Worst thing was that my files got corrupted after I closed down so I had to delete all files and download them again to get rid of the bluescreen.

The FPS is good, I usually run around 50 with everything maxed out, more in the wilderness.

The soloquest are quite fun actually and feels a lot more inspired in many cases than EQ2, not so many kill 20 X so far.

The graphix is good, not as good as AoC and there are a few things they could have done better, espacially animations.

And the character creation could have had more hairstyles, 4 for each race (and sex of course) is a bit thin compared to most games, but the slider system is fine, My character look unique 'cept for the hair.

Tommorow I will try crafting, gathering and some more diplomacy.

Still, so far I am having a good time, maybe I should consider that 30 bucks to get all the SOE games... But I wont decide until I tried it a little more.

Ive been playing the full game for just over a week now and have not run into any bugs.

There will be more hair styles in an upcoming patch. Dont know how soon though. Is there a barber of some sort in game?

There a quite a few "kill X" or "get X drops" quests but those are mainly for the Solo quests. The Small Group and Group quests have a bit more variety and are almost always a quest chain.

If you're one of the people that reads quest text then the quest chains are pretty good. The United Thestra Races quests are unintentionally funny and have great rewards.

    Thanks for the reply.

The EQ2 trial do have a lot of buggs that are not in the game too, I suspected as much.

The blue screens worries me, had 3 now and they are the first with this computer (And I had it 8 months or so). And I got the latest GFX drivers but I hope it is the trial version that buggs out there too.

I would guess there must be a barber, they have put them in both EQ 1 &2 so it is likely (My swashie changes hairstyle a few times a week, nice info anyways because hair do make a big difference on how people look and it is a quite simple one

Yep, of course (unless I am really tired or in a group that moves fast).

If you get a bluescreen you get a message there which file is causing the bluescreen along some more infos and some strange numerical number. Write both down and put the number into google. You should find sites where this number is linked to some more information bits.

This might give you helpful information to help tracking down the problem.

    Edit:

Just read your reply that files got corrupted. I once crashed and my shaders got corrupted which are located in /installdir/bin/caches/*.* I deleted it and the game downloaded the original ones (took a couple of seconds) and it was ok.

If it starts to happen a lot I will fix it, no problem. But I am just too lazy currently, going to Cuba in a week so I just don't feel for a few hours work like this right now

It can of course be something else than the trial even though it is the most likely thing.

I would suggest that if you just started getting blue screens, it is likely an air circulation issue, get some compressed air and blow out the dust bunnies from the cooling fins, ESPECIALLY from the graphics card area...

Then, if you can, use a box fan to blow across the case front to back, see if that changes anything. If not, it's likely imminent hardware failure, if it does, it'll likely be ok...  Dust can cause tempts to go up by as much as 30 C! Anything over 80 C will start to cook your chips.

Hopefully that will help. I am glad to see people enjoying the game, I might actually play it now... I have my old pre-order code for the sprint scroll and my collector's box.... never did use it.
