DAoC was my first and most favorite game. I was going to resub to play along side WoW, but I thought of a few things that DAoC doesn't have that I've grown accustomed to.
Auction House- DAoC allows anyone to buy from other players over the marketplace (forgot the name), but it doesn't allow everyone to sell. So this leaves those who can afford a house (the rich) the ability to get richer, while people starting over or who are new are shit out of luck.
Itemization- I love getting new items frequently, constantly changing my look as I level. It keeps things interesting for a person like me, who gets most of his enjoyment from customizing his character in both abilities and looks.
Combat Pace- Back in the day, taking several minutes to kill 1 mob wasn't a big deal. Nowadays, you can dispatch a mob in a matter of seconds. You also have plenty of downtime, even after the endurance changes.
A couple of other things I'm worried about is the length of time it takes to level. I heard they sped up the leveling pace, which is discouraging, since I enjoyed the pace the original game had. Probably because my favorite part of the game was grouping up with others to just kill stuff and do dungeon crawls. I also worry about the activeness of the playerbase. As I said, nostalgia is what would bring me back, and what I'm nostalgic about is the fun I had when leveling up with other players. I just think I'd be leveling up solo.
So I just decided to buy a single-player game instead. Anyone else have similar reservations about returning to DAOC? If they release Origins, I'd definitely come back, because everyone starting over would increase my chances of leveling up in groups a lot.

Regarding your issue with itemization:
I never had this problem especially since the changes to the crafting professions. They can now craft the pieces of armor with different designs on them. The weapons from the Labyrinth have an unique appearance to them as well. Even back in the day there were items with glow effects and particle effects that made it fairly interesting... at least IMO. The fact that you could further dye your stuff made the whole "rainbow" syndrome of WoW nonexistant. I could always make my armor and later even my weapons any color I chose, and suit any purpose I might have.
As for the rest of your post, I'm just waiting on Origins. Every now and then I get a sort of craving to go back to the Classic servers but I pass on it because I'm not quite convinced there is enough players for porper PvP battles that are consistent in numbers. I have my lvl 50 warrior there that I could jump in and play with. He's well equiped with a MP crafted set of armor, and a very nice champ weapon so it wouldn't be too hard to go out and fight. Might get my ass handed to me by all the high RR players but I've fought them before and I've won a few times. It was a damn good challenge.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
You're pretty much talking about lvl 50 itemization. Lvl 50 is after the journey is over, after what I found to be the best part of the game, the journey, grouping up with others to dungeon crawl. I wish there were a variety of armor looks for each tier of levels. Items you can get while leveling in classic zones I mean. The adamantite (sp?) gear is different, but it requires you to grind out instances, usually solo, and you never get enough to buy a full suit before you level out of it.
Basically, I guess my rose colored glasses are wearing off. I know DAoC is a great game, and it's my favorite, but there's definitely been some improvements in the genre and Mythic could implements some of the best improvements in DAoC. I seen Mythic include more quests, and a new quest interface, but I could care less about that improvement. What I'd like to see is a true auction house at the very least.
Either way, I'd still definitely resub for an Origins server.

Now that you put it that way, I can agree with you. It's really a shame. I used to have tons of fun fighting in the lower dungeons with people. Dungeons like Tomb of Mitra (alb) or Nisses Lair (mid) were great fun at level 10. The fear of mobs, fear of the unknown. I was on the edge of my seat the first time I went in there. At the time the people were great too.
Now not so much. About a year ago I went into Cursed Tomb (mid) and found 1 person... that's it. Some of the other places were empty. I weep now as I remember the good old days.

unfortunatly i had a similar experience got all nostalgic about playing so i resubbed my 2 main acocunts yeah i know buffbot not really nostalgic. But there you go. :P
But when i logged in i then realised i had done everything that meant to be done, taken relics, killed the dragon wiped out everything in galladoria even the final boss at the bottom (that big tree foot).
unfortunatly apart from the classic servers noone does shrowded isles anymore, and due to the xp rate changes it works out far far better to exp up either in the rvr zones or in the battlegrounds.
I personalyl felt that mythic went too far too fast in some respects for instance shrowded isles allowed a totally different leveling experience from 1 to 50 in si, like wise when they implemented the catacombs you could again level 1.50 there.
The problem is i feel after spellcrafting the game changed from just having fun to being the best equiped and being specs x y z to compete in rvr. Just see daoc as fond memories and try and not to to think about it too much. It had its day unfortunatly mythic hasnt really moved forward with anything and so its stagnated a bit.
You may be right. It didn't keep up with the times, except maybe graphically. RvR is still the best, but I really miss the old PvE experience too. I think Origins will be DAoC's one last hurrah for me, if it releases, then I might finally remove the game from my computer and lay it to rest knowing I gave the game everything.

Auction Houses - I am kind of indifferent about this. I like the WoW Auction House system, but I dont necessarily think DAoC needs one. It wouldnt bother me if they implemented something tho.
Itemization - This never really bothered me for some reason. I guess because all of the dyes really satisfied me in this department. I remember rolling alts and giving them enough money to dye their gear, even at lvl 5.
Combat Pace - No comment. (Just dont have much to add for this right now )
I think the reason mythic made PvE so fast and "easy" now is because the low population and the fact that leveling is basically a solo/duo with your bot event now. I remember the best xp was getting a full group and tackling some epic hard area that you otherwise could not do solo/duo - Magic Tree in Cursed Forest or a Knights group in Darkness Falls were two major leveling spots that I remember once you got to the higher 40's.
Anyone else remember rolling a new character in hibernia and looking for a water beetle group? You could either hunt them north of ardee along the bank all the way to the bridge or south of mag mell on the bank of that huge lake.
Instanced dungeons killed grouping, imo.
I really hope they come through wth this origins server - I know alot of people complained about leveling, but honestly it was one of the most enjoyable things to do. I have yet to find a game that I enjoy leveling in as much as I liked DAoC. I have played WoW for around 3 years now and just yesterday got my first character to lvl 60 and I first started back when 60 was the cap! I just cant stand the solo/quest based leveling system, which is what instances/task dugeons turned DAoC into.
I wont be resubing until origins is online.
Well, as far as WoW goes, you can get a similar group experience by grouping up and doing instances. It'd be like doing dungeon crawls in DAOC, except in WoW you won't have to compete for spawns and you get some nice loot while doing it.

Your loss on not playing a true PvP/RvR game. You certainly won't be getting any complaints, your choice simple as that. Although your gripes seem very childish.
Auction House:
I like having a seller for your house instead of an Auction house. At lower levels I can see how this is bad, but I still have my level 50s from when I used to play. I was able to get a house within a day of playing, and a seller within 2 days (starting with my level 50).
Itemization
This is really the only bad thing I find about DAoC. In the lower levels you pretty much use the same armor as everyone else. Not much that I can defend about this, it isn't that great hehe.
Combat Pace
This depends alot of which class you are. Healers still take awhile to kill mobs (though not like it used to be). Downtime isn't that big of a deal for some classes. Hunter (my alt I leveled when I came back) for instance has almost no downtime at all unless the mob makes it to melee for an extended period of time.
Speed of Leveling
They did increase the leveling speed. However, you can still level at almost the same pace as the old game. If you do not do the taskmaster quests or grind in battlegrounds you are pretty close to the old style.
Grouping
Levels 1-40 are pretty much solo now I miss the days when you grouped up and did dungeon crawls as well. I soon got over this when I got to frontiers and began grouping (with my hunter) in RvR.
Hopefully Origins comes out soon. I will definitely switch servers to Origins, but I will miss the normal servers when I do. Alot of people I've RvR'd with say they will be moving to Origins when it comes out as well. So I guess I won't miss it that much, since I'll be with the same people
