nvlddmkm driver has stopped responding ......

tvalentinetvalentine Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 4,216

ok ..... when i'm playing any video game, i get this driver that stops responding, and if i dont close the program it crashes my computer. I have searched the internet and have not found ANY solution to this very annoying problem. I updated my video driver and it is still crashing. Also when this happens i HAVE to reboot if i want to play my video games again, even though it says it has recovered it still wont allow me to run anything that requires heavy GPU usage. Does anyone have any insight on this problem?

I wanted to combine your two posts here.

If this happens regardless of OS... drivers and changing most hardware.

Then the logical thought process is something isn't changing.

Such as motherboard (and its a motherboard issue) or some such.  I notice in your text you mention vid card, os, ram hd... but nothing about the motherboard.  Was it ever changed?  What model is it... check for bios updates?

Those things that affect some people and not others are the fun ones.

I haven't had this.  My last two nvidia probelms (7900GT OC and a 9800 GTX) were both because one clock or another was set wrong at the factory or the cards were flashed with the wrong bios.

Also did they ever try an ATI card... or do they have issues with those as well?

    Anyway... /end ramble

Pull out a stick, see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, try the other stick.

ATI has a very similar issue on vista, I had to drop down to 6 gigs because one of my sticks wasn't cutting it. Though there is anecdotal evidence that it affects pretty much any computer with 8 gigs in it.

Is the computer posting, or is it not even making it that far?

actually her card is a ATI radeon, and no the only parts we havent changed so far is the mobo or powersupply, but this is a problem with both cards. and a pretty wide problem as well.

yeah we pulled out a stick also, worked fine for a day, then it went crazy again.

i go through to the screen that just has the line in the top left corner and then it says "disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter". I reset the cmos and still get it, so now i'm callin them up again to tell them resetting the cmos didnt work. I'll try the ram thing once i figure out this problem i've given myself

EDIT: alright i fixed it. It just tried to boot from my other hardrive that didnt have the OS on it

EDIT2: well i had no clue there was a "nforce" driver that needed to be updated to ..... so i updated that and my bios and now my CPU is running at 1.6 ghz when it should be running at 2.4, the bios messed with my multiplier i think so i believe i know that fix as well...... This is the last time i ever update my bios. I will try and repeat this nvlddmkm problem once i get home from work, i didnt expect all this updating stuff to take so long.

This is a well known Vista problem that apparently has been fixed for windows 7, which of course does nothing to help Vista users.  Both Nvidia and ATi have struggled with it and continue to do so, ATi with a lesser degree of success and as I don't ever use ATi myself I will leave those helpful tips to the ones that do.

As for NVidia.  Download the latest drivers which are the 181.22 at the time of writing this ( for my card anyway ) you can get these here  http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us  Go into control panel > uninstall a program  and from the list that appears choose NVidia drivers.  If you are using an NVidia chipset other than the display you will then have a box pop up, choose uninstall only this driver and select the display driver only.  When the driver has been uninstalled you will be prompted to restart the computer, do this but do not allow windows to load, boot up into safe mode by pressing f8 ( you may need to press f8 continually until it registers ).  In safe mode perform a search for any NV4 files that have been left on the system and delete any that you find.  Then manually delete the folder from your hard drive that contained the previous driver, normally it's on the C drive and named after the driver version, ( DO NOT delete any other NVidia folders apart from the one with the driver which may be inside another folder, the 181 driver for instance is located at C > Nvidia > winvista64 > 181.22 ).

When you have done the above run the latest driver install file that you downloaded earlier and restart when prompted allowing windows to now load normally.

Next ensure that your motherboard BIOS is up to date and update where needed.  Ensure that Vista itself is fully up to date and install updates where needed.    Try out the PC.

If you still have problems then remove all but one of your dimms ( ensuring that the remaining dimm is in bank 0 ) and try the PC.  Test each of the dimms in turn as you may have one or more that isn't holding it's end up very well.  Finally it may be the GPU that isn't performing as it should so if you have a spare video card try that and unfortunately those are the only steps available to you until windows 7 is released ( you could of course try the beta version of windows 7 as a last resort).  Hope this helps.

Well considering that you haven't posted a general list of what you're system is, this is all guess work.

But from what I ahve read so far, yo uare running: Vista, Nvidia based card and motherboard.?

Do you happen to be running on a SB Audigy soundcard?

A full Dxdiag isn't really neccesary 9although it could prove useful), but a list of your basic system components would be a start.

Ok, good to hear you got it worked out. the reason I asked about the soundcard, is that there used to be a conflict between the Audigy drivers and the Nvidia nforce chipset drivers.

THIS is not a specific issue. Driver nvldk... sys stopped responding is a common error message for various issues including:

    • Lack of power
    • Overheating
    • Memory chip damaged
    • Video Card, Motherboard, CPU damaged
    • Incompatible RAM manufacturer with motherboard

    ... and many others

Oh, I am well aware of that.

I was basically just trying to say that I have seen the SB Audigy/Nvidia conflict crop up quite a few times before, and from what information was posted, it could very well have been the problem.

You have to start somewhere when troubleshooting.

lol. This is the post I was waiting to see.  Sorry I couldnt get here sooner.  If there is any fail in a driver, the system is requiring a driver update.  nVidia nForce pretty much controlls all aspects of the motherboards components, i.e, ethernet, on boardsound, etc.

If that hadnt worked out I would have told you to reset CMOS, but you did do that, and still nothing.  luckily you have resolved the problem and I love it when I get that feeling of success!

I had this exact same problem except it was atikmdag.sys.

I tried everything.  Never fixed it, I eventually bricked my motherboard while updating the BIOS trying to fix it.  So I am now waiting on parts for a new system.  If I have the same problem I will kill someone.

  • tvalentinetvalentine Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 4,216

well it just happened again. Apparently it wasnt fixed....... I dont know, but i somehow fixed this problem i had months ago which might have been around the time i had to replace my memory. I'm unsure because it happened a long time ago and i didnt have the problem again. Wow i wonder if this is a problem with my ram again. But i know there are plenty of other people having the same problem, so i dont think everyone would have problems with their ram at the same time.

The core of the problem lies with Vista itself but many different things in the users machine can set it off.  Try the other steps listed in my earlier post and let us know how you get on.

  • asasenpaiasasenpai Member Posts: 124

Basically your driver is screwed because of the viruses.

i did what you said and i will reply later next week to report if i had anymore crashes.

@the guy above me: If it was viruses or a broken driver file, this would be much easier to fix. If you read the thread, this isnt about viruses. I cant tell if your trolling or just making a very bad joke.

like i said, a guildie tried almost everything other than changing her mobo and ps..if you guys googled the issue you would see it is a rampant problem, she has had this issue now for over 1.5 years whenever she uses anything 3d heavy (like games)

I fully sympathise.  A friend of mine had the same with a new build, he tried everything and eventually had to change his graphics card from ATi to Nvidia.  Sometimes minor hardware issues can become major headaches with this bug.  If Microsoft are to be believed the issue has been solved in windows 7, we live in hope :)
