I left DDO about a year and a half ago right before the server merges. I bounced around with a few games, Vanguard, GW and Tabula Rasa and I tried some of the free to play(I know why they are free now).
Nothing filled the void that DDO created. I love the combat in DDO and the character building. I would like to see real crafting and a better economy. One of the things I think they need to reconsider is the AH selling fee. Back when rare items and weapons were selling better and Vorpals were not on the House D broker that % was not that bad, but now a new player is taking a beating if they AH things and get lucky enough to sell them.
There have been a lot of new things while I was gone, level 16 is the cap and I got to level my 2 capped guys a bit since they were 14.99 when i left. New quests, I like the 12 and Meridia areas and the Shroud is fun and satisfies the loot whore in me with many chests for not that much work. I wish I had been around to help solve this quest instead of being a follower now but that is my fault not Turbines.
Overall I am glad I came back and plan to be here for a while for sure. With Mod9 coming soon and my working on a couple of builds. one of which needs to be finished before Mod9 and the other being planned for after I have things to do to keep me busy in game for some time.
I do hope DDO gets some advetising done and gets more new players. This game is definately worth a look and after 3 years of slow but steady progress there is a years worth of game for a new player if not more.

I too have just finished up my first month back since mod 1. I also had a random month thrown in there at one point. I have to say that I am enjoying the game much more than when I first played it. Prehaps it's the fact that I personal life together and not making DDO fill a hole or it might be that the game seems to finally be settled. Either way I will be playing this game through mod 9.

Hello my old friend.
Much as I get to the point I have overplayed DDO, it is hard to find another MMO with the same blend of gameplay, and for me it just fits. Always room for other things to do ovther than quests though.
Thanks for these thoughts. I wasn't there at the start of DDO, and I didn't overplayed it, but I can see the reasons behind your opinions pretty well too. I'm also in love with DDO's approach to combat and character creations system, as well as Dunegeon Master's commentary and unique quests. There is of course, much, much more to compliment, but still DDO isn't perfect.
And while nothing and no one can be perfect, DDO still has a vast field open for improvement. Like you said - crafting (I hate even the thought that Eldritch etc. devices may be left instead of true crafting!). AH and generally UI still can be more user friendly, more intuit and better designed (my opinions). More explanation for new players, done in the fun way, could do well for things like Favor, crafting and many other things.
Yeah, there is still room for improvement, and I trust we will see it. Turbine seems to be redoing many things, and improving the general experience of the game from Mod 8. So, while maybe Mod 8 didn't have gigantic quests etc, I think it was the start of some renewal plan.

It really is hard to find a game that plays as well as DDO and has the deep character creation possibilities that DDO has.
I am really digging the mix of player skill AND player knowledge required to do well in DDO. I've never played a game that I have been able to research all day every day for a month and still feel like a newbie. I think I've learned less in many of my master's level college courses.
Off topic, but I've been thinking about what Turbine's secret project may be. I am praying to god that its AC3 with a wide open world and DDO style dungeons. Unfortunately I am relatively convinced that its going to be Harry Potter Online. Its too perfect a fit for Turbine considering their general style and how they have had so much luck with popular IP's. It could still be awesome though and has much potential for spooky dungeons full of puzzles and traps.
