Looking forward to this game; clearly it must be great to keep so many fans for so long and keep on growing.
But I do wonder - why such a heavy series of choices on attributes right at the offset? I thought this game was all about evolving and choosing your playstyle as you went along (great!), but from reading I get the impression I can gimp a character for life within the first few stat choices... am I misunderstanding it?

Your attributes don't directly influence what you do in the game. A higher number in stat X won't let you shoot faster, harder, or straighter, and it won't let you research or build any faster. What attributes do is affect how fast you learn skills. Perception doesn't make you a better shot, it lets you learn how to be a better shot faster. People say you have to do it such and such a way or you'll gimp your character, but that's not precisely true. You just wouldn't learn the skills you need as fast as the person who is "ungimped". Although I am still fairly new myself, I would suggest that if you are going to try Eve, make a trial account and play it for the 2 or 3 weeks and talk to people, read the forums, and ask questions ( be patient for answers, other players aren't there for your convenience ). If after the trial is over you feel you need a fresh start, start a new trial and make the changes you feel necessary. Then use the new free time to train the skills you want. I believe a good place to start is www.battleclinic.com they have a lot of good info, the EFT, and either a really good noob guide or a link to it, I forget which .
In two or three weeks w/ the latest "expansion" the attribute/starting character setup is changing. I believe they are removing professions and giving the player more control over the stat selection. In addition they are giving new players 2 free respecs and then paid respecs after that.
Veteran players get paid respecs. I heard there was a timelimit on how often you can respec-ie. every 3 or 6 months.
Its quite limiting now-and many veteran combat pilots running around with super high charisma etc-but in a few weeks thats all about to change-from new characters on through to veterans.
Until then I guess Caldari Achura is the only choice for 99% of players...
Maybe fail the way it has been, happy to see it change, but why no free spec for veterans?

I remember hearing that veteran players gets at least one respec free, and that one may only respect twice a year.
Follow my tweet (:
I wish I wasn't such a noob when I started I woulda went Caldari Achura 3/9/9/9/9. Why a balanced build? Because newbies dont know anything w/o playing a game. That's why I woulda went 3/9/9/9/9
They really fubared CHA bad it's the only thing I can't really fathom. Either don't include Amarr Cyberknight & Caldari Achura or make everyone a good choice (low CHA) like those two newer races
And yes- you can sorta harpoon yourself. That's what makes the game cool cause you have that control.
I wonder how this works? Oh, I guess all I can do is move around my numbers. I actually think I moved around my numbers pretty good when I made my gallente jin-mei over a yr ago when I started.
always wanted a Brutor; too bad their stats have high CHA. If they let us give away cha that would rule. I'd give away all of it. Maybe keep 2-3
You cant really gimp your character, Attributes dont effect your characters performance in anyway what so ever! All attributes do is determine how long it takes to train a skill!
But actually, as from the March expansion you will be able to "re-spec" your attributes twice for free on a new character, and then once every six months.
Also the character creation screen is being reduced to one page I beleive and the new player experience is being revamped quite a bit.
With the new expansion comming soon, you will be able to change attributes with all races,it's sort of a respec wich allows you to change your attributes every 6 months, new players get 2 free respecs.
Soo if you want you can wait for the new expansion and just start playing then, they also tuned skill training for new players ,the first 1.8mil SP you train is done twice as fast or something like that.
