MMORPG's with Anime-style graphics?

I love online gaming (though my "have played" list is rather short compared to some), and a big fan of Anime as well. So I was wondering if there were any good MMORPG's out there with some nice anime-ish artwork. So far I've only had the opportunity to try 3 such games.

I've played RO, visually beautiful in my opinion but personally thought it lacked content (as well as actual people), not to mention the bored high lvl jerks who often summon monsters to kill merchant players who set up shop and go AFK while trying to sell goods.

I've played Dark Ages (not DAoC), and quite frankly the performance, customer service and spiteful community just turned me off.

I've played FFXI, which was just breathtaking as far as graphics, and quite fun for a while, but quickly became all too repetative for my taste.

So I was wondering, are there any other MMORPG's with an anime-ish look and feel to it that's worth recommendation? Thanks in advance for any helpful responses.

Seed: The human condition may be along the lines your looking for, theres information about it here on site somewhere.

Its in a very early stage atm but it looks very interesting, one I will keep my eye on ::::14::

Lineage II has anime-style graphics, but also has hardcore PvP.

SquareEnix is coming out with a new MMORPG called Fantasy Earth or something.  Not a whole lot of information released on that game yet.

Guildwars has anime-ish visuals and is a lot of fun, in my opinion.  That game would be your best bet.

Ah thanks everyone for the feedback!

As for Guild Wars, I've been hearing a lot about that one lately. I think I recall someone mentioning there's no monthly fee involved, not sure on that one. If so it may be worth trying out since I've already got an EQ2 preorder and will be paying for that one. As for the rest, well it's always nice to have something to fall back on in case EQ2 ends up being a major disappointment (hopefully it wont). Never been big into PvP but I've been wanting to try it out.  Sounds like a good opportunity.

Again, thanks, and please keep the suggestions coming! Even if I dont try the games mentioned, checking out reviews and such gives me something to do in my spare time image.

You should definitly keep an eye out on Tabula Rasa. Though the release date is still a ways away and I expect it to get pushed even further, I still consider it a very promising upcoming title.

I know someone else mentioned it, but here is a link to the homepage.

If you liked Dark Ages (despite the community), you might like NexusTK, another game by Nexon.  They're not so hung up on role-playing there.

  • CrescendoCrescendo Member Posts: 34

Yeah I've played Nexus also. Performance wasnt as horrid as Dark Ages, but it was a bit too simplistic in my opinion. I dont mean the graphics, I actually didnt mind that at all, and the music was amazingly pretty nice. I just didnt think it was worth $10 a month is all. As for Dark Ages, I like roleplaying, that wasn't a problem (in fact there were very few RP'ers to be found before I quit). There were several other reasons for my abandoning the game. I wont list them here, but I gave the game a review if you want to check out my thoughts on it; and it has since been added to my least favorite MMORPG's list.

I checked out the web site for Tabula Rasa, the game looks absolutely amazing! Unfortunately I've learned over time that looks can be decieving. Still, I'm putting it up there with Guild Wars on my "to try" list. Also noticed that the company both games are produced by (NCsoft) has a logo that looks strangely similar to Nexon's (creators of Dark Ages and Nexus). If anyone knows, are the two in any way affiliated?

Can someone please explain to me what the big deal about anime is? Honestly, its ugly and more often then not its 150% retarded. The only Anime I like is classic anime like Akira, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Ghost in the Shell because they all have interesting stories, and beautiful animation. Then you have this garbage like Inuyasha and Naruto and all these pointless shows... and the only reason i know about those is because my roommate likes them ::::07::

It's an art form. Some people like Rennaisance art, some people like modern abstract art, some people like Japanese manga style art. If you dont, thats fine, but dont be so immature as to insult it. Yeah, I'll agree that not EVERY manga or EVERY anime show that's produced is a good one, I'll admit that I dont even particularly like the majority of the ones that are being spoon-fed to the US since it became popular, but that doesnt mean they're all crap (you listed 4 you like yourself, 2 of which I personally disliked in fact). Someone out there is enjoying them. And for those who dont like it because "it's not American" (or from whichever fine country you reside in), THOSE are the truely "retarded" as you put it. Pride is one thing, but without respect for others, it's just arrogance.

Rurouni Kenshin and Trigun. Got anything against those?

  • CrescendoCrescendo Member Posts: 34

Trigun = Awesome mix of comedy, action, and drama. Only seen it on Cartoon Network though and I thought the dubbing could've been better, but I'm more a subtitles type of guy myself.

Kenshin = Never really seen enough of the series to comment, but I did catch one of the movies (released under the name Samurai X) and thought that one was definatly cool enough to buy...um, if I ever happen across it for sale at least.

Other favorite series/movies include (in no particular order) Excel Saga, Ranma 1/2, Space Pirate Mito, My Neighbor Totoro (laugh if you must), Photon: The idiot adventures, Berserk, and my personal favorite: Now and Then Here and There, among several others.

Hmm....lol this is getting a bit off topic, ah but who cares I started the topic anywayimage.

    (looks around hoping nobody cares)

So sad to see Lord British lose his roots and make a game like that.  Guess everyone needs to make a buck I guess.   But man, he totally lost his identity working for NC Soft.

Could only imagine what would of happened to UO if he stayed with it.  Oh well one could wish.

I am with you on this one.  I can't stand anime, but I do like classics like Arika.  Sailor Moon bah makes me want to throw up.  Reason why I hated FF online, besides the fact that it was basically a sony console game and it played like one too.

  • CrescendoCrescendo Member Posts: 34

I'm pretty sure fewer people (not everyone, but fewer) would dislike anime if some of the more popular series' in North America werent so horribly butchered in editing.

The Dragonball series', for example, had lots more violence, a ton of sexual humor, and even some nudity here and there, and thanks to the uptight North American public, it now sits in the kids section on video store shelves. Sailor Moon (which, by the way, I'm no big fan of myself) also had loads of homosexual content that would've caused soccer moms to flip out. By the way I use "soccer mom" as a figure of speech, so before I get flamed for it, there's nothing wrong with driving your kids to soccer practice.

It's stuff like Akira that nobody seems to question because, having never been released on network television, it was never hacked into a mockery of it's former self. With a few exceptions, anything that gets shown on TV this side of our big blue rock is likely to be ripped to shreds to make it "suitable for children" even if it was never originally meant to be. Cartoon Network's Adult Swim can get away with a bit more than most others because of the time slot and disclaimers, but even they have to stay within FCC regulations.

More often than not, anime isn't really crap, it just becomes craptified when it crosses the Pacific. But hey, if you just plain dont like the look, you dont like the look.

Far as FFXI goes, I rather liked the integrated game controler support. But I have been a console gamer since I was just a shrimp. Game controler movement is just more comfortable to me than using the keyboard or mouse (*shudder* RO mouse control). Just me though.

i know one free bit anime style graphics game but its only 2d so im not sure you need that...

Cowboy Bebop for me. though... I don't know what time it comes on any more and I never stay up late enough to watch it now.

.hack//sign was... strange. never completely understood what it was about. some guy/girl in a hospital in acoma hooked up to a game? image anyway, seemed pretty pointless to watch it since more than half the show was talking.

well... i don't think any game atm with good anime-style graphics is worth playing, but it wouldn't hurt to take a look at Lineage2.. imo, it's the game with the leetest graphics but the least content. should be called XPfarm2. maybe im wrong though. only made it to like lvl 6 or so ;)

Let me reiterate that Dragonball (Z, GT), Sailor Moon, and Inuyasha were never meant for kids.
