It's not ToA.
The reason why DAoC is dead in 2009 is: Control.
They need to revamp the control, so character move sharply and responsively like WoW or WAR.
That's it. If they polish the controls and release Origins, many pvpers would flood in from WoW, WAR, and EQ2.
DAoC offers decent graphics, pvp, and housing. The only thing left to turn off new players is control.
Period. Point Blank.

first you say "Control" then slip "Origins" in there.... Im think the later may be one of the issues (solutions?).
Personally, I adjusted the controls with the key bindings quite easily, so they were similar to those two games you mention.
Im not disagreeing....
I think Origins are on hold. Gawd hopefully for a good reason (DA2 planning????), and not a bad reason (budget). Im thinking the later....
There will be no DAoC2, hell to manage that point they already admitted that the patch going from 1.99 will be 1.001. Its that type of thinking that has put Origins on the back burner. They are playing it so safe, that they don't want to upset there current player base and possibly force someone to leave because of a new server (which might in turn bring in 100's of new players). Its an ass-backwards way of thinking. The only solid reason I can come up with is the recession.
I've said it time and time again, DAoC is a slowly dying game. Comparing it to the other big MMO that came out around its time, Anarchy Online, its easy to see what went wrong. Too many expansions. The world is so spread out now, that actually running into someone else in the lands of SI or the original lands out in the outer regions is a rarity.
There are dragon raids a plenty, BGs, DF and NF. But no PvE really. No population on the PvP server which sees maybe a max of 25 people in a given week. Gaheris gets maybe close to 300 and nobody gives a hoot about the test server.
Combine all that with the recent firings/layoffs of Mythics team on DAoC and you have yourself a game declining sharply. Origins might have saved it, but it looks like no one has the balls to actually go ahead with it.
IMO EA is the reason Origins never materialized. They didn't want it to compete with WAR or hurt WAR box sales. Origins would probably near double current nightly average users for DAoC for at least a few months. EA should just do a station pass type thing with WAR and DAoC. I wonder how many WAR players never played DAoC and would play it if they could play for free along with their WAR sub.
I think I read somewhere that there is a way to play both for $19.99 a month or something to that effect.
Ninja, i agree about the No balls for Origins...
2 games for 19.99? that would be clutch....
Sign me up!
However since I play both, I didnt see that $19.99 special. It would be nice though
To me being semi back into DAoC, its still an amazing game with great concepts after all these years. To bad it doesnt have 250k subs, cause it would kick ass.
No other mmorpg did better than DAoC with its RvR system and 3 factions.
To me, WAR has a more static feel, but can be enjoyable in doses for me. If Mythic took the same concept that they had in DAoC and applied it to WARHAMMER, you would have a kick ass mmorpg game.
You do see alot of similarities in both games, but DAoC still remains the best RvR / PvP I have ever played when it came to mmorpgs with a fantasy setting.
My 7 fav mmorpgs of all time with PvP were.
1. Ultima Online, 2. Star Wars Galaxies, 3. Dark Age of Camelot, 4. Eve Online, 5. Anarchy Online, 6. Asherons Call and 7. Matrix Online (thats right, I did enjoy the Matrix PvP system).
Runner Ups.. Guild Wars, Lineage 2 and WoW were fun as well, but to me, not as fun as the top 7.
Now these were my personal favorites mmorpgs with PvP.
PS. Didnt want to de-rail this message from the topic at hand. All we can hope for is that DAoC makes some kind of comeback in 2009, because it just a great game to just give up on. I say to EA, if Sony / EQ, EQ2 and Vanguard can have 3 fantasy titles still active. I believe EA should be able to pull of DAoC and WAR.
Wrong, it is not control. The reason why DAoC lost so many subscribers is because of ToA...it was its downfall. If people can not learn to adjust to a few simple controls, then it is sad on their part. DAoC is fine the way it is and if they change it to try and cater new people its going to only be like one other game, SWG. Trying to bring in new people will result in losing loyal subscribers and in the end the new people who came in might stay for a bit but will leave. No point in changing a game that doesnt need to be changed. SoE made their mistake and lost a ton of people, so what would be the point of changing an old game to try and fit in with the newer ones? There is no point, unless you were trying to kill your game completely.
And I cant wait for origins to come out, its going to be a fresh start like back in the old days. Race to 50, here I come.
The window of opportunity for Origins to be successful has been lost with the release of Darkfall. Why they have postponed Origins with no information is both unprofessional and incompetent.
Well so Mythic has still about two years time to release Origins...should be more than enough
EA is the reason a lot of things never materialized.
Darkfall has been released?
No but for 42€ you can play a mixtire of Alpha-early beta from Feb 25th on :P

Sorry, but DF releases next week.
Confirmed
Ahhh Darkfall.. you had to come to these forums... well so be it.
I would sooner take my 42 bucks and invest it in a Icelandic Bank before i hit that game. Sorry. When the final DF product comes out, i guess we will see how the Dark Age population is effected. I am suuuuure we will see negetive effects upon army of 500 players and the 2500 bots that support DAoC.
Heaven forbid bad management by EA. Perhaps EA shoud look to DF and the wonderful PR ethics they uphold? EA definatly should get on the ringer , call Tasos himself and ask for direction!

I thought it was confirmed back in Jan.... oh ya *slaps head* my bad
I dont think Darkfall will be the nail in the coffin for DAoC, users that are still playing DAoC may lift an eyebrow to DF, but thats it. Darkfall still needs to prove itself to the public and not what Beta testers are saying which looks like a 50/50 at this point.
The current DAoC player base have alot of time invested, but the peeps that are on burnout with DAoC may try the new DF with its Sandbox type element.
DF is an interesting idea with full loot rights, skill not level based, and fps. But it does have one thing in common with Mythic and DAoC....Both games have been awefully quiet about what exactly their plans are and what the future holds. DF is an unfinished game being semi-released in EU (servers are in Germany), for NA peeps, and given that it is full looting and open pvp, the lag time prolly isn't worth it.
I personally hope the game fails. Its not really a MMO type game, more a FPS game like call of duty or something similiar.
Back to the matter at hand, I do wonder what the point is with them migrating the game to new hardware...

I strongly disagree.
ToA was a failure, but how long ago was that? People aren't holding grudges.
This is 2009. There are classic servers available.
How else do you explain the thousands of pvp hungry players that are sick of WoW, and EQ2, when there has been a free trial and that Dark Ages, which offers world pvp and housing..
Where are all the pvp players? Where are all the WoW players that are begging for housing??
They are playing the games that are more fun to play, and control contributes more than anything to a fun gameplay experience- IN MY HUMBLE OPINION.

Yeah I have to also disagree, TOA was a dissappointment to be sure but the fact remains that there are more players/bots on the TOA servers than there are on the Classic. Which basically means that no one gives a crap anymore.
As for the PvP (RvR), the gameplay in that respect seems to be about gear and skill in knowing the game. The only people doing well in the BGs (or in any PvP area) are the hardcore players. I've been looking at things in the two main BGs (Thidranki and molvik) and while I do play Albion, I have noticed a distinct lack of grouping on our realms part, and the sheer successfulness of players who just stay in the BGs all the time. They move the stealthers in first, then the fighters and finally the mages. Which comes down to tactics and knowing how to play the game.
I do wonder how many new people, try the game out and get so frustrated from being killed 5x in a row in the BGs by players who just stay in the BGs. Its no wonder that the subs are not going up. No PvE groups or really anyone grinding. All the people are in the BGs trying to level and getting ganked by the hardcore players. And I have to blame Mythic on this choice, since they keep the double exp rewards going in the BGs which in turn forces everyone to play in them.
Simply put, this game is a mess. Since Mark Jacobs left it to do WAR, the game has gone downhill rather quickly. Various community managers being laid off, transfered or just quitting becuase of w/e producer in charge refuses to listen to the community, nobody sees the true problems with the game. Its old (by MMO standards), the gameplay has devolved into the super rich having decked out alts (see how many have jet black armor and the best of equipment), and of course nothing but PvP going on (with the exception of dragon raids).
Origins would have stopped all this with only the original and SI versions, no BGs and the OF back. But it looks like they are too scared to introduce something new (old) for fear of losing current players (which makes zero sense since there are other servers) from there flagship baby, WAR. I really doubt that WAR will be going to the graveyard anytime soon, I'd expect the plug will be pulled on DAoC before that happens, especially with the limited gameplay options that DAoC has to offer.
Now that you mention it, I too am wondering why they're moving it all to new hardware. They even mentioned easyer patching and stuff... strange.... very strange. I really hope they're hiding something big
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
Will have to wait and see, kilbury is being moved today, only Devon remains and thats scheduled next week. On a sad note, Hib lost its other relic today and we're back to Alb-4 and Mid-2.
On one other note I'd like to briefly touch on, the PvE areas are virtually empty. So, the camp bonuses are all maxed out for the most part. If you ever had problems trying to do this quest or that while waiting for a mob to spawn, now is the time to try it out.
On another odd note, Modred seems to be down an awful lot lately and never has more than 20 people on at any given time, it also seems to be down at the same times as Pendragon. Weird.
Hopefully they will take three of those old servers (devon, killsbury and Bossiney) and turn them into the Origins servers (since it was previously mentioned there would be no realm hopping, 1 account per realm). Just a thought....will have to wait and see what they have planned.
I'll come back if I get an Origins server with the Old Frontier.
Otherwise, it's not for me.
well i hope it does not remain "too dead" ... i just resubbed, and 3 other buddies did...
2 of my buddies as well resubbed into the game. We have been playing CoD4, L4D and WAR. We needed a change up as well and now rolling Mid on the Lamorak Classic server.
We were albs before and the toughest choice we had to make was either pickup where we left off years ago or just re-roll a new faction...
