4 slots in EQII per account

CaliphCaliph Member Posts: 3

I don't believe I saw this posted here.

Most people will know that these are the last few days of beta.  Soon the game will be out, and there will be no more time to /feedback about the game.

For the past week or so (maybe more) there have been two large threads on the official boards about there only being 4 character slots for us to tangle with per account.

Many people do no feel that this is a generous enough amount, and we would like to see them consider adding a few slots.  Here are links to a thread on the official boards, and one on EQII.com about this.

http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=betagameplay&message.id=79185&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

http://www.eqii.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=20075

If you happen to be beta testing EQII, and also feel that 4 slots could be improved upon, go ahead and voice your opinion, and even better, /feedback it in game for the next couple of days.

Happy gaming everyone.  image

There is a huge discussion about this here at MMORPG.COM in the EQ2 forums...

Thank you very much .. that Games in Development part escaped me.

But still, that is primarily a discussion and here I don't look for responses as much as I ask for people interested in more slots to /feedback it in game.

Aside from that, thanks for directing me to the EQII discussion. image

They will not change it. No matter how much people say that they want more then 4, they will only release 4. In a company point of view, its a good idea. See its like this, they know that people want more then 4 slots. In the near future, after release, SOE will come out with a system that allows you to pay more per month to obtain more slots, OR incease slots via an expansion that will come out (right before x-mas this year probably lol).

I do hate the idea of 4 slots... but there isn't much anyone can do about the situation. Thats why all my friends and myself are going to sit down this weekend and plan out our characters.

Well, there is something you can do. It is one of the reasons I will not be playing.

Gotta speak with your wallet to these companies. Everybody like to bitch and whine, but they still give them their money.

Speak with your non-subscription. . .it's a game-designed without directional guidance from the customers. Since that's the case, there are much better options that I'd like to reward with my subscription money.

For me, 4 slots is more than enough. I usually stick to 1-2 chars the whole time. Never had need for more really.

In EQ there are about 130,000 unique individuals subscribing, the other 300k accounts are results of extra accounts those 130k additionally subscribe to and the 1 month trial accounts.
Every since luclin when SOE forced out McQuaid & Butler it dramatically shifted it's 'vision' to milk EVERY possible dollar it could from it's US subscribers while trimming it's expenses to the max (eg, pay to name change, pay to move between servers, pay for CS and content [legends] vs. firing many of the guides [they play free, no subscript $] fire 1/3 of the GMs [save about $2M/yr,] increase subscription rate [after all DAoC was charging more.])
Hence with EQ2 they want fewer people paying more so their expenses are lower and the project shows more profit. Running +40 servers and employing the rare GM & CS staff are definate bottom line expenses, so, in EQ2 they want fewer servers, fewer (high-payed US) CS, and with fewer subscribers they have to manage less virtual data (probably the cheapest expense in mmorpg) storage.
By limiting the accounts to only four characters across ALL servers they A. cut down on the number of characters subscribers can create including the storage needs of those loot hungry chars, but also B. encourage the old EQ users now playing EQ2 to also subscribe multible accounts like they do in EQ1.
Now in EQ2 we have to play the few characters allowed only the way deemed acceptable by the devs pov (no real place for strategy nor excelence in individual gameplay/skills [except mayby untill players subscribe for a year or two {casual gaming} and accumulate level 50 bonus skills.]) EQ2 is sooo simplistic even grade school children can play. But no real solo play allowed. Nor solo artisen-crafters (high level crafters need difficult to acquire resources/components and w/o a huge reserve of gold no way a solo char can acquire those resources.)
The trouble is, those wanting the fun & demands of EQ1 will have to wait till 2006/2007 for Sigil's Saga of Heroes. You will not find it in current EQ, nor EQ2, nor wow, nor lineage2, nor DAoC, nor any other mmorpg!

    4 slots is plenty

I think when you max out four characters and get bored then you have a right to complain...

we all just got spoiled by eq1 with 8 slots, I think they didnt realize how much memory that would take up and now they fixed it.

besides im sure they will expand it later with expansions and such so just play with your four characters and just have fun...

EQ1 had a lot more than 8 slots. You had 8 slots per server... In EQ2 you get 4 slots accross all servers.

I personally figure they'll eventually change it. For the first few months they're going to be wanting to just keep the servers up and stable and fixing bugs. They shouldn't have to worry about storing 6+ characters per player initially. Once the game is smoother, and the short term players are weeded out... I have a feeling they'll raise it.

Four slots should be plenty in my opinion. You can have a main caracter, an alternate, a bank mule and 1 slot to experiment. Of course I come from Firiona Vie where we only had 1 slot so even 2 for me is a lot.

I don't quite see why people would need more than 4, how many different caracters can you maintain actively in a game that takes up so much time to accomplish anything.

Lol Sullon Zek here, we were only allowed three slots and they all had to be same diety team. 4slots sounds great to me ::::02::

three? When I left it was one....did they let you get two more?

  • TaskyZZTaskyZZ Member Posts: 1,476

But what if you want a character or two on each of those servers? Then you would need 6 or 8 different characters. And lets not forget Rallos Zek and Tallon Zek.

So, if you want two characters on a carebear server, one on Rallos Zek, one on Tallon Zek and one on the RP server, then you need 5. You are only allowed 4.

I know all these different servers don't exist in EQ 2 yet, but when they do, they better change something.

Characters I would like to play:

    a male halfling warrior
    an female elven mage
    an Ogre Warrior
a druid (not sure which gender/race yet)
a shaman (not sure which gender/race)

Then, I want to try some specialty servers like PvP, or RP, or whatever. Or, if I want to make an artisan or two that does not adventure.

Can't do this with 4 slots, and I think my desire to do this is very reasonable.

I am not the type of player who wants to max out the level of my character as fast as possible. I like to dabble in different gender/race/class combos and get each of them to 20 or 30th level. Depnding on my mood that day, I play a different character.

I want 8, however 4 slots will be plenty to get to the first expansion. I will bet they up it to 6 or 8 then.

    I miss DAoC

  • RoinRoin Member RarePosts: 3,444
Well they might take a Ubisoft/Shadowbane approach and give you an extra character slot.   Each time you buy one of their new expansions.  I side with the folks that say 4 isn't enough.   I know when I played EQ 1 I had at least 6 on one server alone.  Not counting the other 2 servers I played on during my 2 1/2+ years of playing EQ.  They don't necessarily have to change it to something as high as 8, but at least 5 or 6 would be a nice compromise.

I think it should be atleast 8 total, or perhaps 4 per server, but 4 total is just not enough, lets see there are 16 classes, (i think) we can try 25% of the content YAY!

I think the importance of having available character slots is t expierement to see which character you like. If you think of it this way, for the first month you can get 4 characters to level ten. You can only pick 4 classes anyway, 1 class per slot, I know you'd want to explore each class beyond level 10 or 20, but by the time you are level 10, if you didn't like the made class, then you may not want to move on trying to go further with it, so  you can make another scout which you enjoyed and subclass another type of scout class as your 4th slot.

A lot of people want varity, like me. I'd well rather have 8 slots than 4, but i think for the first month, 4 should be ok, even while you are testing race class combinations. Anyway it's not really in our hands, it's been decided and we'll have to live with it for now I guess.

I would say make it 5-6 slot for all server instead of like EQ 1 8 slot for on each server.

for those of you are and were in EQ 1 before. think how many "Main" characters you have? I think around 3 to 4. the rest are just storage characters or Bazaar characters.

As you know more character had been created mean need more storage on server, which also means more money is being spent on the storage fee. but the players arent playing them at all. its a waste.

What 4 slots does is force you to eliminate high level characters to make room, thereby refreshing the character advancement cycle and slowing the rate that servers get filled up with max level characters.  Now Sony may have some other reason for doing this, but I think there may be some benefits to having this limit.  Most folks concentrate on one or two mains, anyway.

  • herculeshercules Member UncommonPosts: 4,925

No question about it been a decision based on $$$.

Getting people to buy extra copies but you know who cares lol.I don't have time to make 20 level 50.If i can make 4 level 50 it will be even amazing.

  • zethcarnzethcarn Member UncommonPosts: 1,558

    4 slots is plenty.

If you played EQ1 think about how long it took you to max out just ONE character. Besides, you could always just jump to another server if you need more than 4 to try out other archtypes.

no 4 per server, it's 4 total - ever - across all servers image

A dev posted on the beta boards that 1 EQ2 character takes as much storage space as an entire EQ1 account(and you could have alot of characters on EQ1) so I understand wehy they would limit it.

I think folks need to understand that EVERY decision a company makes is about money. Id be kind of worried about a company that doesnt care if they make money or not. ::::02::
