So I've decided to give WoW a chance again...still deciding on a server but will definitely be something High or Full in population! I don't like open PvP cause I don't wanna have to look over my shoulder every sec before fighitng every mob...I did this during launch month and got tired of being ganked. I don't mind open PvP raids on Outposts or participating in Battlegrounds and Arena, but open with full on ganking just doesn't do it for me.
Testing out Moon Guard atm, most populated RP server, tons of players...anyone know how the community is there, has a guild I could join and would help me out sometimes, etc?
Last time I played I was a Draenei Shaman, but this time I wanna play Horde {being evil is just so much more fun, even though they're not really} anyway; I'm having trouble deciding on what race/class to play this time. I love the Shaman, but I don't like that I can't use swords....I prefer them more than axes or maces.
I really prefer playing a healing based class, but none offer sword and shield style on Horde side besides a Blood Elf Paladin but no thx, don't wanna be a Paladin. I'm more interested in playing an Orc or Tauren, my two favorite Horde races, and these are the choices I've narrowed down:
Not interested in the other classes these two races offer. I really like Shaman but do I wanna do axes again, and the only reason I'm thinking Warrior even though they can't heal is because they can wield swords! Maybe a hand-to-hand or dagger Shaman could be fun....
Death Knight I know will fill half this void {no shields} once I get a char to lvl 55 again, but I'd prefer to get my main class to 80 before I play the Death Knight.
Lastly, I'm trying to decide on what sex....from my time running around the cities testing what to play I've noticed that their is a plethora more male characters than female. The Orc Female looks ok, but the Tauren Female are kinda *blech* to look at sometimes.
Males are obviously enormous in stature for both races and have grandiose shoulder widths...ROFL ...and weapons/shields are also displayed as very huge. I've always played smaller races in WoW and other MMOs in the past, but thinking that a male/huge character could be interesting again. Havn't played Male in an MMO in over 7 years...
Well, I have some tough choices, which don't sound like much to many, but these are important to me to enjoy an MMO for some odd reason. Looking forward to some feedback... thx

orc shaman on illidan will probably be your best bet but at start you ll solo till lvl 55 when you go to outland then you ll met deathnight.shaman is fun ,warrior beurk i tried it and i didnt like it
Illidan is a PvP server...gotta be Normal or RP!
First, I would pick a medium-high server, leaning slightly more to medium. The thing is, waiting in line to log into your server can be a bitch, specially when it takes over an hour. Since WOTLK, server pops have risen dramatically.
Second, in terms of shaman or warrior, I would say that rolling a shaman is a better choice. Warriors did not receive the amazing buffs that most of the other classes received when patch 3.0 came out. Warriors use to be the dominate force in ALL of pvp. Now, they are very much falling behind, behind replaced by deathknights in all aspects of pvp.
You mentioned that you like to heal, and shaman do that very well. Infact, in the past couple of weeks, shaman healers have been the buzz in arena. Many of the top 2v2 teams have a resto shaman. In 5v5, elemental shaman (ranged dps) are common among many teams.
If you want to simple tank, then I would say roll a warrior. They are still the best tanking class in the game (imo) and this is coming from a pally tank. In terms of race, well that just depends on what you like to look at more. Unfortunately orcs and tauren both have the ugliest female models, tauren being slightly uglier.

Since WOTLK, server pops have risen dramatically. Got all the time in the world and recently bought 27 new novels and have several WoW lore novels otw I wanna read; which I can do if I end up having a queue. I'm tired of playing MMOs with lack of players wanting to do stuff, and WoW certainly has no shortage, but I wanna force that point even more with a high/full server!

I see, didn't know about that, but I knew Shaman were very good at healing being a Resto Shaman last time I played and I love many of the changes Shaman have recieved in the past 16 months!

Have to admit I never liked PvP much unless I played Shaman cause of that earth shield that resto have, made it more fair for someone like me that doesn't excel at PvP. I was able to stay alive longer and most rogues couldn't kill me so I was very happy!

Yeah, not really into tanking, love to heal more, Warrior is just a thought cause of the swords, but DK can fill that in after I unlock it I suppose. Ugly is ok as both the Orc and Tauren of both sexes aren't pretty which is good I think this time...always playing too much pretty me thinks. Think ya definitely got me interested in Shaman again, and now to decide on race/sex.
Definitely don't wanna do a Female Tauren, sure they're rather rare oppossed to male, but my eyes burn after awhile looking at them. Then of course as an Orc either sex seems fine to me, and they excel with axes which I know I'll end up using eventually...
So its:
Hrm... oh and I think I'm gonna roll on Moon Guard {RP}
I'll try to put this in end-game terms but still encompass a leveling up standpoint.
Since you're not looking for much PVP action (requesting PVE or RP), that cuts down the suggestions by roughly 3,000 pages rounded down.
Anyhow, Shamans and Warriors are both great in PVE. They have their strengths and weaknesses and I will first touch on the classes.
Shaman: Enhancement (As you are choosing to stick with weapons). Enhancement has had a lot of nice improvements in the past couple patches. Their leveling ability is quick and efficient with (around level 52) Spirit Wolves that heal you while they damage your target which is nice for questing.
Theyre a lot of fun, setting up your totems and instantly enchanting your weapons for each specific situation, instantly switch to Ghost Wolf form for fast travel, Astral Recall is your 2nd bind-recall ability with only a cooldown of 15 minutes which is very very handy.
Orc is your best bet here. The racial AP ability is great for damage, but the axe specialty, endgame, really isnt gonna do you much to write home about.
Warrior: They are the epitome of gettin face to face, down and dirty. They are very gear dependant, and in most cases your warrior is only as good as its gear (for the most part, dont flip out on me, ive played a warrior for 3 years, gear matters sorry to bust your bubble).
In comparison to a shaman, they are (imo) harder to level with. No heals (until level 80) unless you bandage, not too many fancy bells and whistles. They hit like trucks, but survivability is better with a shaman. Endgame, their Fury specialization puts up some retardedly high numbers, and they are (IMO) the best tanks in the game.
Their is a stigma to playing a Warrior. Again, imo, they are more challenging than some of the other classes, but it all depends on how you want to play your character.
Races: Tauren for tanking (when I played I DPSd as a Tauren and beat most of our DKs on DPS) but it is still flexible to do whatever you want. Granted I would have probably done a little bit more damage as an Orc, but I was never out-gunned by anything other than another Tauren (full endgame gear). You can also tank with an Orc, but TBH man, the racials (specially for horde ATM) are very minor.
Have fun.

when leveling a warrior, you have 2 basic choices; level in protection, meaning you can basically take down 5 mobs your own level without dieing, but its very slow. or you can level in arms or fury and go fast but have to eat to replenish health after ever other pull. when you get to level 80 you will have alot of options, go fury for titan grip and dual wield 2-handed weapons which is just awsome, or you can tank.
shaman definitely have a lot less downtime with abilities like water shield, mana totem, etc and healing which allows you to level alot faster. when you get up to raiding in end-game, you will find yourself wanted no matter what your spec because of your heroism. added to this you will have your totems to buff the raid and you do alot of damage/healing as well.
as far as server goes, try and find a reletively new server with a medium population. avoid the older servers which have a bigger probabilty to break down. I'm on terenas EU in the cyclone battlegroup, and we have had a terrible time since wrath was released which instances crashing, almost weekly server restarts, realms being taken offline for long periods of time, etc. in short, its been a mess since the expansion (even now you sometimes have to wait 5-10 minutes to get into an instance).
Yeah the Fury Warrior dual-wield two 2-handed weapons really sounds fun, but I may wait and do that as an alt. I like the idea of beaing wanted heavily at end-game and for once I wanna delve into instances alot and maybe get into some frequent raiding which I've avoided for the most part in the past!
Still kinda set on Moon Guard...couldn't say anything since on a trial atm awaiting my boxes in the mail or get over there easily, but there was a player run event that was just hilarious to listen too last night. They were calling it the "Running of the Bulls" and basically ya had to show up at Stormwind with a lvl 1 Tauren and everyone lined up and ran inside and whomever got the furthest were getting 200g rewards.
Sure I know 200g isn't much anymore but the event sounded like fun and was amusing to listen too...would have loved to participate. So far the community there has been fun to listen too and there was an interesting discussion on healers last night that was quite informative. Learned alot from much of the changes since I left.
There are a ton of players in the starter areas and up through lvl 10 to the cities I saw running around too which is good. I few other medium servers I tried when deciding were vacant....
Just trying to decide on a race and sex still. Gave Tauren Female a try again last night and I kinda like them again....they're not so bad as I thought and its kinda rare to see one or many at a time; which fits with the name I'm using as well...hehe Of the 5 other players using this name according to the Armory only 2 appear to be active! Yesch I like to have unique names too...
Orcs were always my fav race I played all the time in Warcraft RTS through the years and then Tauren showed up in III and then WoW so now it tough to decide. The reason this is so tough for me is cause I do plan to work heavily on the achievements...it one of the main things that encouraged me to return to WoW as well as the new expansion and more casual access to instances and raids. So I wanna make sure I'm gonna enjoy that character the whole time from beginning to end!
Well after much deliberation, I decided to play a Male Tauren. The movement of the Tauren are just so much smoother and the animations are great like their beard swaying when running and casting spells/fighting etc. The Orcs while still nice as well, but have this kinda blocky thunk to them when running and their shoulders seem to stay squarely in place....still like them, but maybe later!
Here is a screen of my Tauren with the current UI I've so far built...not much atm only being lvl 4 but it'll get busier. I like having everything really small and mushed into corners or along the outside of the screen!
Great choice! Shamans are a welcomed sight these days. They are wonderful raid healers and also fun to roleplay. Taurens are the rarer race to see on horde side. I suppose that's because the community is saturated with Blood Elves. Heck, I even play a Belf.
What realm did you choose? I wish I would have posted earlier because I have done extensive personal research in finding the best PVM realm. After taking my time with most of the RP realms I have to say Steamwheedle Cartel is a clear winner. They have the most helpful, mature, and good natured community. Wherever your hooves landed, I hope you enjoy your stay in Azeroth!
I'm on Moon Guard, the most populated RP server, at least for the past year every time I looked at it, its always reading Full. Having fun so far; level 10, seeing alot of new/alt players in Mulgore with me.
If ya didn't read above, I have played a Draenei Shaman to lvl 70 and that was summer/fall 2007 so about 1.7 years since I played and on Alliance. I'm liking the horde alot more, and I'm actually getting into the lore whch I haven't before. Those books laying around are good reads if ya actually read them.
Blizzard has always been a fav developer of mine, I just got burned out on WoW in the past but now LOTRO has bored me to death cause it just doesn't have much depth and I tore through it all.
Should be getting my retail boxes later this week, so I should be able to get lvl 20 by then, but will have to wait to get further since the trial cuts ya off there.
I've also ordered War of the Ancients Trilogy and gonna see by starting at the beginning of Warcraft history if it draws me in further!
