Well I know I'm gonna get spammed by DFO Fanbois shouting "TROLL TROLL!!!". But as a lot of and most people seem far from satisfied with the way Darkfall has turned out from what they've seen in beta. I myself have yet to try the game but from what I've read most reviews give me a pessimistic sort of view on how the end product will look considering its release is in 5 days. Anyways, back to the topic at hand, what do you think will be the next big thing people decide to well latch onto? I myself think it will be MO it looks really cool, of course Im not going to invest too much curiosity into it with how Darkfall turned out and everything. But it seems as though it could be more of a sandbox than DFO. Yeah its in first-person but is that really that big of an issue? Not to me it isn't. I would have to say the most intriguing thing to me has to be the whole Cult/God/Whatever thing it sounds really cool and the fact that it uses the UT3 graphics engine ensures that it will have good graphics. I'm also waiting to hear more and see more on WoDO that just sounds amazing especially since Vampire the Masquerade:Bloodlines is one of and maybe my favorite RPG I've ever played. It will also be interesting to see an MMO thats got that kind of theme but that isnt F2P.
Your thoughts?
Really hard to say, Redhands.
I honestly feel it boils down to what each individual considers a 'savior' to MMO games to even mean.
There is truly no doubt there is a rabid fanbase for every possible style currently offered in MMO games. From PvE, PvP, solo, raid, genre, mechanics, role in game, crafting... on and on. The desires of players are as varied and unique as each MMO being produced, now or in the future. It's a random thing, and if developers had any true sense or vision in what would cater to the most people and would be the next sensation in the MMO gaming environment, well...
Many games are coming out this year alone that cater to so many tastes, really, I truly believe ultimately that it's an individual 'feel' thing.
I don't know if I could pinpoint a specific game, exactly, but I'd venture to guess that whichever MMO game takes the world by storm, it will have elements that cater to just about everybody and their distinct niches within the game, and not producing a game based on the niche itself.
DFO looks horrible to me. It just.. does. It doesn't make it a bad game. It doesn't make the appeal to those who feverishly love that type of game, and consider it to be their idea of a perfect MMO, wrong.
I tend to honestly try to endeavor to not think about what game will have the next ten billion subscribers.
No, to me, my next 'savior' will without question be the game that I spent time in because I was just thrilled by the overall experience that catered to my personal tastes. Which game could it be? With the amount of games in production now, there's a lot to try when the developers deem them enough of their vision of what an experience they'd like to present is complete, and judge the merits from that.
Two games that come to mind that will be the next big thing... 1. SW:TOR - People are already drooling over the screenshots and dev videos of the game. Remember this is Bioware, not some unknown who pulls a mmo out of their arse and slaps a monthly fee on an unfinished game. All their games are popular and very good. They also have a huge fanbase following. Bioware has the 'Midas Touch" everything they touch turns to gold and I see it being no different here. 2. Guild Wars 2 - Arenanet has an awesome dev team. They came from Blizzard, they know what it takes to make great games and Guild Wars was proof of that. Millions have played their game and it is one of the most successful games since WOW. Arenanet will once again prove that you can still make a good mmo without charging a monthly fee. I would of added Blizzard's next gen mmo but we don't even know what it is yet, so I'm sure we'll all be keeping an eye out for it.
I guess... But both of those will put a lot of emphasis on story and I like story but I don't like it to be TOO involved in the story I hope SWTOR isn't anything like Guild Wars. I know Champions will be like that so I wont even be keeping one eye on that and instead will be looking towards DCUO!
Yeah I love story in mmos because I like the suspense in knowing what is going to happen next. I didn't mention Champions or DCUO because I don't think alot are into the super-hero thing. I don't think either will be mass marketed games. Though I will be playing Champions

There's nothing really out there that presents the same amount of hope that Darkfall does. Aventurine had a weird (and often bad) way of handing publicity, but their "Our way or the highway" policy is a HUGE relief to people who've watched companies buckle under pressure and transform good games into crap. I watched it happen to SWG, and I watched it happen to Lord of the Rings Online before it even launched. When you NGE a game in beta and totally restructure it, ugh, that's pathetic.
Anyway, I've been reading reviews too, and most of them are positive, the vast majority in fact. Trust me, I have been in beta a long time, there is no one more critical out there than most of the Darkfall beta testers. Whenever something was sloppy, wrong, out of line, they raised hell, and almost every time, Aventurine addressed their concerns with a patch within a day, 2 at most. That's what has impressed me the most.
The game, as it stands, has all the groundwork layed out, all the major features in, and just needs a little tweaking. Don't let doom sayers and people who had false expectations (like the ones that thought the game would let them take over noobie towns even though devs explicitly said that wouldn't be possible YEARS ago), sully the image of the game. It needs work, yes, but it is more than ready for release.
As for the next game, I'm glad to see more unique games like Mortal Online and Planetfall I think it is? Coming out soon. Though...Mortal Online looks like a huge freaking scam. All they have is a pre rendered trailer they are claiming are in game graphics (even though the internal alpha screenshots look NOTHING like the Crysis like video) they plan to have massive battles with twitch combat with 12 hitboxes, and according to an interview with the devs a month ago, they are JUST NOW testing arrow flights across distance for the first time, and they said it might just not be possible due to the lag. Oh yeah, its coming out in a few months alright, and they're selling t shirts :P
Darkfall really is the last hope, thats why so many cling to it, nothing really like it out there. And thankfully, the devs have delivered.
Yeah I would try Darkfall, but they are only going to allow 10000 players on there only server which means BASICALLY no one will be able to play.
I have been one of the most active skeptics regarding DFO. I don't hate DF, I hate groundless fanboyism. But what I have seen of DF is giving me some hope. It feels like the real thing and not a disney land painted cardboard recreation. It has many problems but I think it could be worth trying and maybe will be a standart in the future, along with EVE.
I completely agree with this person, I don't hate DF but the blind fanboyism just get rediculous sometimes.
If they can learn from their past mistakes, Square Enix may have a winner on its hands with Project Rapture which will be shown off at E3 in June this year.
Seems a lot of people are putting there hopes on SWTOR to deliver and Im sure it will be a good game but I think that once its released it will just fall in with WAR, AoC and the likes, as a game that many will like but that many will also hate. I personally have nothing against WAR or AoC, I enjoyed WAR and AoC. (AoC more so)
The next "savior" which I am taking as the next real success will likely be SWToR, Guild Wars 2, or Blizzard's next game. All three games are being designed by people that can be expected to create a good game.
Outside of WoW there isn't a game that is really appealing to gamers. I have come to realize that hundreds of thousands of people can be expected to play a bad game and enjoy themselves. The genre can easily survive on a glut of niche games, and performed quite well as a niche genre during the days of Meridian/UO/EQ.
However, I'd like to see the genre start having games of at least the caliber of WoW.
The MMO genre doesn't need a Savior imo. Right now we have a good mix of Themepark, Crpg and casual F2p mmos on the market and after 2009 the new sandbox games will hit. Once DF, MO and ER hit the market and join the likes of Eve MMOs will have thier own little niches and be just fine.
There's no real hardcore PVE game yet like Vanguard or EQ. Don't say LOTRO or Aion....seriously.....don't make me smack somebody.
If Vanguard had a better launch, the servers, $ and support would be there for a great game. That's not the case though now, so we need a new heavy PVE based game to launch.
For PVP there's a lot more choices right now, PVE, meh..not so much.
I am only guessing, but I really think this is the aim the 38 studios is aiming for.
I actually grouped with curt a few times on povar way back in the day. Even though I secretly laughed at his name, he was really into the whole everquest scene and was for a long time after I left.
Some will say DarkFall sucks and will fail because it has Full Loot, HardCore gamer only, etc. This game will not fail as in the first place, they did not plan on making a competition to WoW. The moment they aimed to make something for HardCore gamers, competiting with WoW became impossible and they do not even care about that.
Full Body Loot, PvP-based etc will attract hardcore gamers who like this genre and have been hoping that a game would offer this. Same for the crafting system. Saying DarkFall will fail because it has features you don't like is stupid. Saying game will fail because they were not able to succesfully integrate the features would be a better reason, but to say that you must first have tried the game.
AoC is probably one of the best exemple. A lot of hype, Fans are pissed and leaved, now people are slowly returning to AoC and like it.
______
Back to topic, for now there's no game that I can proclaim "Savior Of MMO's" unless I try it.
DFO has the potential to still be "that game" but I'm flabbergasted they didn't push the release back ATLEAST 2 months (its what the game needed to be HALF finished). I mean sure, most of the features are in the game, but they are HORRIBLY balanced, let me re emphasize that, the balancing in DFO is HORRIBLE. As is the implimentation of nearly all the features. I'm glad they fixed the alignment system and sieging system before release though. Again, I'm flabbergasted they actually released in Feb... you can delete all your items before you get looted, magic is such a gigantic freaking grind you must be insane not to macro, and getting a colonoscopy is atleast 5x more fun than gathering in DF, again, if you don't macro this, you are insane.
Seems a lot of people are putting there hopes on SWTOR to deliver and Im sure it will be a good game but I think that once its released it will just fall in with WAR, AoC and the likes, as a game that many will like but that many will also hate. well i don't see why you won't like DF then, I've played both the AoC beta and DF beta, and I must say that DF has much more content on release than AoC had (though DF's features are horribly balanced atm.... HORRIBLY HORRIBLY HORRIBLY balanced)

Yeah and eventually I will end up trying DFO in maybe a few months or a year. (That is if there isnt something way better out by then.)
Also this isnt a flame DFO thread, I just dont think its going to push the industry any further. As alot of people have pointed out they have alot of problems similar to UO at launch whereas they should have learned from UO.
It will be AION, it has to be AION, because if it isn't AION; my trust in MMO's will diminish entirely, I'll just give up on MMO's and return to RTS"s or FPS's, or try out this DOTA which everyone is talking about...

lol Dont kill yourself if Aion ends up being one big Asian Grind fest. There are plenty of other promising MMOs coming out in the near future.

For PVP there's a lot more choices right now, PVE, meh..not so much.
PvE much moreso than PvP relies on content largely added after launches, no game launches with an adequate amount of PvE content and balance compared to a game that has been receiving regular updates for ages.
PvE raiding, WoW had it right pretty much from late vanilla to all the way through TBC (after the initial expansion stumbleblocks were patched), if "hardcore" is what you were after, and you can hardly not know about WoW if you know about MMOs I imagine.
If with PvE you mean leveling, there's quite a bit of variety out there in various forms and shapes that is pretty good. Only crafting is something that's hard to find anywhere seriously.
Looking at launch games won't get you quality PvE in any case. In 6 months AoC could be a good PvE game if Funcom doesn't go under and continues to patch things. TCoS could also become good if they ever manage to fix their distribution.
You are wrong and you are right.
Everquest launched with enough PVE content, i would say that DAOC did as well. The reason they launched with enough content was because you couldnt get from 1-50 in a month, or two, or three, etc etc. I started playing EQ months after release and it was very difficult to find people who could even do ports yet.
The reason why new PVE games dont release with enough content is because experience comes way to fast, you level way to quickly, and the playerbase hits max level before the devs have time to add in more content.

Schilling and Salavatore both liked EQ a lot so there is hope. But sadly they both like WoW alot also.

That makes sense. But of course how would someone go about changing that? I mean with how experienced gamers are these days how would they throw a curve ball at em to make it take that long to level to max? Back when Ever Quest and DAOC came out MMORPGs werent as known as they are now. MMOs werent as played so no one knew all the tricks of the trade to go out and grind it out or whatever. Another thing is how lately most MMOs mark on your map where you need to go for your quest making it too easy.
The genre doesn't need A "savior" and isn't going to get one. MMOs are becoming popular, the cool thing to do like playing Guitar Hero or some such, of course the quality will go down. The hope is that the genre will become so large that small companies and designers can create works of art and have them make money. For Most of the genres life up to present anyone making an MMO had to go in all or nothing. I can't even remeber how many companies went out of business because thier MMO failed. The day making an MMO isn't an all or nothing bet we will begin to see better and better games. However, just like the current regular video game market there will be a lot of trash to weed through as well.
Even Aoc which lost like 22 million made around 50 million.Wow makes 500 million dollars.Maybe some people need a new mmo to play but the over all mmo market is fine. Now if you looking for the next big game the best bet would be on TOR ,bioware and star war game no matter what they do will be a huge game.
Darkfall's going to be the 1st to step outside the cookie cutter for awhile, bringing a bunch of old favorites back to the front and instituting new ideas. Many companys caught wind and are producing similar styled games coming out later... but for now we have Darkfall.
I sold my eq2 and lotr accounts the 2nd day i got into the DF beta. I wish i had them back just so could sell them again muahaaha.
Wondering what the next big "Savior of MMO's" will be? <--- This mentality is what is breaking this genre.

Yeah seriously..
You dont see console games needing a fucking savior. Why is it nessessairy that your mmo or the next mmo has to have all teh subscribers.
This mentality is the reason why devolopers only stick to safe games and dont try to make games to fit specfic genres, they just all rehash what worked in the past, then you get morons complaining about WoW clones. Well obviously we are going to get a bunch of wow clones, its the most successful.
All i want is a game that fits me, i dont need a saviour i just need something worth while. F2p games or p2p games there doesnt have to be a saviour.
Anyway in my opinion, i believe KOTOR will be my next mmo ill try to play.

Just for perspective, some could consider a savior to be a game that breaks away from the mold of diku-mud based mmos (eq/wow/etc) and revitalizes the genre with something completely new, or at least new enough to makes things fresh again.
As far as I can tell, the original poster was talking about games and concepts and not what game would gather the largest population. All the talk about huge populations is just something people seem to be assuming.

We can always hope.

It hasn't been announced yet, whatever it is.
The mmo market does not need a Savior

Pirates of the burning sea expansion will be the next big thing , or atleast rusty and his ragged crew will try to make you think that.
