Runes of Magic correspondent Robert Sollazzo takes a look at secondary classes in Runes of Magic, detailing class combinations that work and some that don't.
By now you've heard all about it and it's definitely one the most notable feature in Runes of Magic. For those of you who missed the beta boat, you've got a tough decision ahead of you: Choosing your character's primary and secondary classes. If you don't already know the particulars of the classes, just fall back on every other MMO you've ever played, or simply hit the RoM website here for the details. For those of you who already know the difference between a Priest and Knight, this article is less about the classes themselves and more how they work together, specifically some theory behind choosing your second class at level ten.
Before we get started, it's important to note that once you make this decision, only an act of God or convenient cash shop item can undo it. Don't be afraid to take a moment, because your choice can make all the difference between rolling a good character versus a great one; and some of the choices aren't as hot as they would first appear... Such as the Rogue/Warrior combo. Yeah, we'll get back to that one. So who's first on the list?

And I thought they were talking about how much a 2nd class citizen you are if you don't purchase from the item shop, especially in pvp.
Nice article, can't wait for the second part. I made a R/P, M/S, and K/P. The first 2 i'm doing very well on, but the third ... well, i need to just think of a strategy for him. But i'm glad i didn't choose a bad combination .
Tried P/K and S/M and P/R, didn't like any of those. I'm thinking about making a R/K in the distant future, 3 is more than enough for now.
All on PvP server.
@Ozmodan, they have to make money somehow. Mind you ... i don't buy anything from the cash shop, but i won't hold it against them for trying to milk us for cash :P, after all ... the game isn't like the average F2P.
Though i must say ... the whole PvP system HAS to change, it's lame as it is, and no-one is really PvPing in the normal sense. I'm holding all my judgement till release.

The best range combo would be Mage/Scout...I found a way to kite high level bosses without losing hp at all...Sure it took me 1 hour to kill but still managed to do it...The pathing issue can be used to your advantage, because I've reported it so many times and they havent done anything to fix it, then why not keep manipulating it....
One of my other personal favotire combo is a Rogue/Priest....the DPS is amazing along with your invincible spell and HoT abilities you're basically unstoppable...I soloed Abbey at level 30...killed all the bosses except 2 where were Ancalon and that other boss that has an add ever 20% or so hp....
Unfortunately I dont play the game anymore....great game, but hasnt kept me interested enough to put in more effort....The grind is extremely horrible once you get to around level 35....You're jsut stuck with doing daily quests until level 50...grinding off mobs alone would take forever...
I've seen people 6box this game....and when they gave the 50 diamond per account gift I had over 1000 diamonds because I created so many free accounts....
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Nifty article, though.
Can't wait until next week. I'm curious about the Rogue and the Scout in particular. I've got a Scout/Mage (currently M/S for now), and buddy is likely to go Rogue/Priest.
It's not bad for a F2P game that has a lot of WoW-ish feeling to it regarding interface.
This game would be really interresting if they'd had a better way to level up the secondary class~
Only way i see it, is if they give portion of the XP from the primary to the secondary, like 25% or something. Or make a special quest to give a huge boost to secondary. But i don't mind the current system anyway.

It could be that it remains a static percentage of your main class's level. Different mechanic, but I guess same result.
The dual-class system in RoM works much better than the way they explain it. First, there is some confusion as to the terms "primary class" and "secondary class". It really has nothing to do with the order in which you chose them; it deals with leveling and skill access. Whichever class you are currently leveling is the "primary". You have access to all level-appropriate skills of your primary. You have access to only a limited number of your "secondary" class skills, and the secondary class does not advance.
There is no division of experience or talent points, although there is an item that allows you move talent points from one class to the other. You level your first class a while, then switch classes to level your second class. This class switch is repeated throughout play as your character progresses.
Oh, I see. They're going with a FFXI style system. I hope the game turned out better than FFXI did.
Nice article, and I agree with it to a degree. I play a Knight/Mage and it is great. The thing about the Knight is that they can tank very well, really well once you get into plate armor. But their over all offensive is much weaker than the other classes like the Warriors and Rouges. But having the mage as the second class give you the mass DPS you need to really make you dangerous. Now at lower lvls you will be very potion dependent. But once you get to lvl 24 you get a Knight general skill called Devotion. It effectivly rasies your mana pool permently with each boost to it's lvl. Plus the Knights primary skill called mana absorbtion ensures that you will not run out of mana at all during what would be lengthy fights.
All in all I am very happy with this combo of classes as long as you keep the Knight as your primary class. Once you get past lvl20 you become a brilliant fireworks display of armor, swords, hammers and shields that even higher lvl mobs can't take down
There is a Madness that has grown in the Light. And it is coming to burn you a cinder
That sounds like a nifty combo. If I ever get around to playing this game, I may have to try it out...or get Casey to, he likes tanking more than me.
Am I blind or has it been a month already and part 2 isnt out?
Also, any tips for Scouts?
