Turn on Street lights with your cellphone.

This is very cool. In Germany they're testing with street lights that are normally off at night that you can turn on yourself if you want to with your cellphone.

Some lights are simply off at night to save energy in areas with lower population. If you pass by you can turn on the street lights with a simple call to the street light. It still costs money though, so it's 3euro for 60 minutes, but I hope it's free soon.

Some argue that they could have used sensors though, to see if someone comes close, which is true I guess.

Sensors sound like a good idea.

We tried turning them off, but crime and traffic accidents skyrocketed so we switched them back on pretty damn sharpish.

I don't want to be walking home at night in the pitch black trying to turn a light on with my cellphone... whilst wasting 3 euro's

keep them on 24/7 its vital for safety issues.

I've overhauled entire lighting systems in large office buildings that have sensors throughout the occupiable space so that after hours the lights come on when the cleaning crew comes around and when they leave the lights go out.  I think they could do the same with street lamps.  Set them up with LED bulbs that take little or no juice so there is no startup surge when they come on and have them stay on for say 10 minutes after they go on.  If anything moves near by the timer resets allowing there to be light where there are people and turning off the lights where there are none.

There is the issue of crime and I have no answers for that.  Thing is there's still crime even when the lights are on.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
