Blizzards worst decision

numaticnumatic Member UncommonPosts: 675

I started downloading WoW last night while I slept using the gayest download program ever, bit torrent. I wake up this morning with only 600MB downloaded. I then stop it to restart my comp. I start redownloading and it starts up at 500MB...so I somehow lost 100MB. Then I let it start downloading again. I come back and what happens. "Tracker Lost" error message. Then i try to redownload it and now im getting "This download has expired!". WTF is this crap? Not only is my MAX speed i got on this thing 5 times slower then my AVERAGE download speed (my max i was getting with the BT client was 30KB/s averaging out at about 10KB/s), but now i just lost an entire night of downloading...What the hell was going through there heads over there?

BitTorrent may have been their worst decision up until about 5 minutes ago. ::::18::::::18::

bittorent saves them thousands and thousand and thousands of dollar of bandwitch, I never had any problems with it, and if I would have been Blizzard, I would have done the same.

  • numaticnumatic Member UncommonPosts: 675
God forbid blizzard dishes out a few thousand dollars to satisfy there potential customers.

You may not have had any problems with it, but others sure have. Many, many people have been forced to download at 2kb/sec on high-speed connections because of it.

Blizzard has been cutting every corner they could in the last month or two.

They pissed off so many people with FilePlanet, all to make a couple of bucks. Then they pissed off more people with bittorrent, just to save a couple of bucks. And now they pissed off more people because of FilePlanet(again), just to save a couple of bucks.

Even SOE hasn't been this cheap..

while they save money on all that, they can put money on developement. On day delay is nothing for the money they save. I mean, I don't mind at all if I can't play before tomorrow.. that doesn't botter me.

Plus the bittorent download is available since a WHOLE week, you ppl had plenty of time to download it back than.

are you retarded? its 2.5gb download. try having thousands of people download from same/multiple servesr, it just eats up bandwith, or, go the cheaper route and have everyone download off everyone else with multiple connections instead of one, just being client and server and with this many people, it would go so fucking slow if they didnt use the bittorent, only took me 2 days to get the game and thats pretty good for a 2.5gb bittorrent

Hi , you need to get bittornado and make your upload rate very small like 5kb/s then you'll avarage like 130 kb/s. GL

lol, i cant believe people would think blizzard would host a 2.5gb game for public dl, they only host for 1 torrent which is good enough

Im not pissed about the slow download speed. Im used to it using a P2P netwrok. What i was pissed about was the fact that I have to start al over again.

Erm they are offering you the chance to play a game for free before buying it in the shops.

    Not many companies allow that.

And your moaning about them not hosting 2.50gb on a server.

    Ungrateful.

actually that's just brutal.. worse actually.. for a large company like Blizzard and their producers to cut corners this way and be so cheap..

makes you wonder what they plan for the rest of the game.. will they continue to be so cheap?

Cut corners and being so cheap? My god how stupid are you.. If they wanted to cut corners they wouldn't wait so long to release the game. If they wanted to be cheap they wouldn't be doing all these beta testing. It obvious you're too dumb to understand the benefit of distribution via bittorrent versus client-server for a file this size, so I won't even bother.

well I kind of got "a bit angry" in the start of my download, it then said approx 1 day left and speeds around 12k, atm I have donloaded 250mb in 1 hour and I cant really complain about that.

and as others said, Blizzard is letting us try out this game for free, and doing so they might actually loose pontential customers, but I recon that they gain more then they loose bye doing so.

I got the client in about 3 hours off the bloodglan.org torrent link. Maybe you just have a lousy ISP.

  • SofaSofa Member Posts: 31

hmmm... try downloading the torrent file and using your own client, not blizzards. You can lower the upload a little, and it will help with your DL speed. You can also try changing ports, (are you using a router? that can be problematic if you don't configure it correctly).

With the bandwith they save using this P2P technology, they will be able to pay for there devs who have been working 7 days a week for ungratefull people. And continue to keep them working hard. Maybe they can even pass savings on to us? Instead of 14.99 a month, maybe they can make it 12.99 or something.

I also see a lot of ungrateful people here. One post here even said he would buy EQ2 because of all the trouble downloading the game (that could have been downloaded anytime in the last week) and play it for FREE. Nevermind that SOE never had an OB and a very limited closed beta. I don't know much about bittorent because I've rarely used it since I have an FP subscription (well worth it). But I'm betting firewalls, both hardware and software have something to do with the download speeds. On Sunday when Blizzard installed the patch, I had to shut down my software firewall, but my router didn't seem to be holding anything up.

Well I didn't enjoy spending 8 hours straight clicking on a web site over and over.

But people have settled down now. Now we spend the next two days downloading and pray that it works.

BitTorrent is an excellent piece of software, you have just gotta make sure your settings are correct. There are also other, better Torrent clientso ut there for free download. I DLed the file with a steady connection between 100-200Kbps. Is your router forwarding the appropriate ports to your IP on your network? Is your firewall enabled and allowing traffic from the appropriate ports?

BitTorrent traffic accounts for approx 35% of all internet traffic, I think that alone should be testimony that it is indeed a good product.

Yeah that sounds like a good idea... unless everyone is doing it.  Think about the repercussions of doing this.  Bit Torrent relies on other users sending data to you.  If everyone had a bandwith throttle set to 5k/sec, your DL speed would likely never reach the 130k/sec that would otherwise be possible.  Setting a cap on your upload rate would also result in longer downloads for everyone.  I could be wrong about this but it makes perfect sense to me.
I am on my fifth try to download the client.  My first three tries resulted in a corrupted file.  My fourth try gave me that "invalid file" error.  Now I am on my fifth attempt to download a beta client.  I too have experienced that "lost connection to tracker" message.  I didn't lose just 100mb, I lost 1.2gig when it happened to me.
What it boils down to is if you do not like the download speed of Bit Torrent then spend the money for a File Planet account.  Personally I severely dislike File Planet and refuse to pay for a subscription.  I decided to put up with the crappy download speeds and not screw other people over by limiting my upload bandwith.  You are welcome image
    GAME ON!

Knowing that the OB was coming and with the mountains for information, links, and help from fellow MORPGers, I had the forethought to d/l the program almost 2 weeks ahead of time. It took 1 day 19 hours using Blizzards Bit Torrent program. My average d/l speed was 10kb/s and my upload speed was always 3x that.

One more thing Blizzard is not cutting corners, just not paying unnecessarily so everyone can play for free.
