I must not be too technically literate with this bittorent stuff. I cancelled my download because I thought something was wrong. I didn't realize that 2 days to download a file was actually 'pretty good'.
I also was thinking this morning that if I had to open up a couple of ports on the router, would this game allow others to play on it besides me? What I mean is that the info I read on the WOW pages was to open up a a few ports on my router. It mentioned that I need to open up a port and have it forwarded to a machine. All is fine there and I have the ports opened and forwarded to my personal machine.
However, my wife wanted to play this game too and she uses the router as well with a different internal IP address on our setup. Since communications for those ports come through the router and get routed to my machine, how would I set it up so that my wife on her machine can also play the game at the same time I am? Is this any concern?
Well, BitTorrent was Blizzards decision to use. I suspect they even have something to do with the coding of BitTorrent. However, I've been in WoW beta since Phase 3 and every patch has been with this lousy program. I won't be buying WoW for two reasons, reason number two is BitTorrent. I see no reason for a patch download to take me 1 day, 22 hours and 43 minutes - not when I pay for a high speed cable connection!
My average upload speeds 150K/Bsec My average download speeds 4k/bsec
Yes, you can use a private BitTorrent client, but Blizzard really doesn't want you to do that. So, if you want to play by the rules, here, your kinda screwed.
While I've never had any problems connecting to a seed server, the speeds have always sucked. Now I understand that if you actually have access to configure your BitTorrent client (as mentioned here) you can throttle the outgoing bandwidth and increase your incoming bandwidth... but not with the Blizzard BitTorrent.
[ Note: Tried this on the T1 from work. I was still getting a 4-8kb/sec download speed. But it maxed out the T1 on upload speeds. Very EVIL!! ]

Very strange, so many people seem to have problems using BitTorrent. I dunno whats up with that, it always works well for me with decent connection speeds. Perhaps Blizz jsut doesn't have the server capacity to host this kinda stuff atm, but will in the future?
For the people trying to defend Blizzard, please look at it from a logical point of view. MMORPGs have no demos, only free trials that usualy require some form of insurance (AKA a credit card number) and quite possibly an open beta. And, logically speaking, although Blizzard's fine folks have released a plethora of fantastic games I highly doubt that they'll release some kind of game trial week soon after its North American (for arguments sake) release date.
Henceforth, this is some peoples only exposure to a game as such. And in all honesty, the presentation as such might just be enough to drive people away from actually purchasing Blizzard's game. It looks extremely poor on a company who no doubt has millions of dollars in revenue to use a shotty (no offense bittorrent) peer2peer transfer system for a proclaimed awesome game.
First rule of business is that ya hafta spend money to make money. Let's not lose sight of this people.

LOL, if you ran blizzard there wouldn't be any money to make. I guess you don't understand how it more efficient to distrubute a very large file to thousands of people via bittorrent & FP. Considering that they're already spending money for all the game server, it would be unwise to add unnecessary cost to host a file of that size. Can you image the bandwidth cost that would accumulate, not to mention there no guarantee that people get their copy faster considering the number of people tryin to download it.

I wholeheartedly agree here. WoW is most definitely one of the most anticipates MMOs (if not the most) of all time. Taking that into consideration, you've gotta figure there are at least half again as many people trying to get into the OB as will actually subscribe to the game. Why spend a ridiculous amount of money to host a 2.6GB file for users for a short period of time, a good number of which Blizzard will never see a dime from?

Because presentation is EVERYTHING. Spending a little extra cash on this may turn that 50% you talk about not playing into 25%. Blizzard is selling a service and what kind of message does it send to potentials customers of that service when they are cutting corners before the game has even been released? People remember their first experience, I know when i'm visiting a restaurant for the first time and I get fast service and good food I am more apt to come back... But that could just be me.
Presentation is everything. That's why we have commercials on TV, in magazines, and so forth. This is an advertisement that needed to be presented in the upmost of quality and kinda bombed.
Please people, don't defend these multimillion dollar companies who could have sported even a few days of direct FTP downloads. When you give them sympathy as such, it debases them and makes them look as if they're prone to idiotic or even accidental mishaps.

This is not an advertisement, but an open beta test. And if they were interested in'cutting corners', they could have dumped the whole open beta idea, and instead give you a 20 mb movie trailer to download. You know, the kind of movie trailers Sony has been putting out...
And if you are not getting a proper download speed, then the problem is at YOUR end.
I started the download using their client about 30 minutes ago, and have downloaded 180 Mb, and the ETA for the 2.5 gig download is roughly 8 hours.
And about the cutting corners again : they could have given you a halfass beta game and reduced the download to 400 mb by cutting out everything above lvl 10 and only have a few zones in it. Instead, it looks like they are offering the complete version for download and for you to play for free for the next 10 days or so.
And, if you don't like the way they are doing things, you always have the option not to participate in the open beta.
I for one will, as I have never played this game and wish to see what it's all about. And FYI, I have never played EQ2 either.

eehhh, but what if they use the system when the games comes out? you pay for it so atleast you could expect a fast download system
I think its fair to say, for an open beta, I dont mind using p2p... But if they use it for patches etc when the game goes LIVE.... i will NOT buy wow... at least SOE handles that end really well
It would seem to me that any slow connestion speeds are client-side. I have spoken with many people, and everyone I have spoken to who made sure to configure their router and firewall properly reported download speeds upwards of 100K. That being said, I agree that while I had no issues downloading anything, it would be nice if Blizz could, at the very leat, release a somewhat more user friendly downloader. The Devs have also repeatedly stated that they are still working on the downloader, and have asked everyone to give feedback on it on the WoW forums.
Of course Blizzard is cutting corners right now, other than any money they get from FilePlanet, they are not making any money off WoW. They have been developing the game for how long? and you are mad at them for trying to save money? Put yourself in their shoes. If they spent money all along to make everything *perfect* they would have gone bankrupt long ago and WoW would never be this far.
Once WoW comes out and Blizzard is acctually making some money off of this, expect customer service to skyrocket.
Remeber, Blizzard is a company, they are in this to make money, not make every last person happy. All they have to do is keep the majority happy with it.
P.S. ~ It took me 2 hours to download the client using BitTornado at 250-300+ kb/s.
