My first impressions when playing DF for the first time was = Vanguard. A hugely buggy game with a lot of potential! However the difference with DF is that ,unlike VG, if you are patient enough to persevere with it and look beyond the roughness of it all, a genuinly different type off MMO is there unlike any modern MMO on the market today. Ive been playing for a few hours now and i havent got a clue what im supposed to be doing and loving it! Every little thing that i learn to do is a challenge and there fore enormously gratifying when i work it out. Its a welcome tonic after the recent spate of hand holding MMO's that have flooded the market since WOW.

UO is my favorite game ever so don't get me wrong here but UO came out in 1998 I believe. If it feel and plays just like UO over 10 years later in this newer MMO market, well that is kind of sad.
Questions...
Is it just one click button mashing?
How are the animations?
That is all.

lag is pretty awful at the mo so its difficult to give a fair answer, if youve played VG the graphics and animations are of a very similar quality. as for one click mashing, ofc at the moment. i only have one attack and no money or skillz for anything else. come back to me in about 5 hours with that question i reckon

The animations are mediocre. I wouldn't call it *quite* one click button mashing. The best way I can describe the combat in the game is to say that it's like Oblivion, but slowed down maybe 30-40% in general, and sans dynamic directional attacks.
so.... is it at least fun? will it at least hold my attention for the next couple months haha
i dont wanna go back to wow again... im so over that.
Depends. Do you like pvp? Do you not like auto targeting? If the awnser is yes then Darkfall will keep your attention for alot longer than a few months, as that is just a very basic part of the game.
I love those games where you're just thrown out into the world and you have to find out what you're supposed to do yourself. If Darkfall is one of those, that's great. But here's the part that keeps me from jumping out of seat from excitement: there's nothing to do. Or at least that's what I've heard. I've read there's maybe a couple of fun quests to do, and I guess you could do gathering and crafting, but 90% of the game will be killing. When you know that, you do have an idea of what to do. You grind until your skills are decently high, then you kill people. You don't play through the huge and epic quests, you don't drop your sword and become a merchant of sorts, you don't travel far away, build a house in the middle of nowhere, kill people, collect their weapons and stash it in your house (sorry my thoughts are just carrying me away now), you don't explore the great lands of Darkfall's world and find treasures or hidden dungeons. You kill people. And that's about it.
I'm not saying it is like that a 100% and you'll be restricted to doing nothing but killing, I'm just saying I've heard that the game is based around PVP and that's what's worth doing. It's not like UO where you can do whatever the heck you want.

I disagree. My time during beta, i spent maybe 5% of the time PVPing, the rest of the time discovering hidden caves, dungeons, cities in volcanoes. I spent it fighting monsters to give me the arrows/regeants/gold i need. I found a treasue chest key off a monster and spent a couple hours looking for a chest it could unlock... finally finding one that gave me 2k+ gold, a magical plate breastplate that was extra affective vs. bludgeoning, and a skill 30 bow that gave me + 3 dexterity when i equipped it.
There's LOTS to do besides PVP.
Thank you, you have given me hope. I'll go back to refreshing the account management page every second now.

And did you lose those items you took all that time to get when you were ganked next?
I know equip doesn't mean anything, but if the point is that it means nothing was it a big accomplishment to get it?
Also I'm curious what happens after you've explored all of those caves and dungeons. What do you do next? Unlock more chests for items that don't help you?
I'm serious, not trying to troll. I honestly want to know what there is to do after the initial shine wears off..
Dakirn:
Okay, let me put it this way. What do you do after you've killed countless of enemies? What do you do when your skill levels are maxed? What's the point? Well, let me tell you. The point is to have fun. If you have fun exploring, that's great. If you have fun doing PVP, that's great too. Hurrah. Everything gets boring after a while.

if anything the fact that you can lose it just gives you more to do, because think about it, in WoW you get your gear then what....? oh great im a dr00d, i have all three sets lol guess i'll lvl an alt, you know any game is like that, eventually you'll have done all the encounters and dungeons.
i just cant wait to get my account and give this thing a go!

I've played both beta and now in retail. What I can tell you is this: the game will not tell you what to do, in the same way that life will not tell you what you have to do. You have to decide that for yourself.
If all you do when you get in-game is grind quests, you'r going to be really disappointed. I for one, have had loads of fun and will stay with this game for a long, long time. Granted, DFO is not for everyone.

That is all.
Melee in its most basic form is like a knife fight in an FPS. It is shallow, but it can still be entertaining. But if you are just mashing your buttons, you are going to fail. So anyone who says it is just LMB spam and that it sucks was just terrible at the game. . . or they were playing with an absolutely terrible ping.
But also like in an FPS, you aren't just using your knife. There is a time and a place for every type of basic attack (magic, archery, melee) and it is the choosing when and where to use them that it what gives the combat depth.
Animations, as with the rest of the graphics, are "eh."
tbh if wow is your only mmo experience you'll probably play this game for a bout an hour and then promptly uninstall it. however if your a vet mmo'er who spent most of his informative years immersed in games like eq or uo then this game is def for you

And why is that?
UO gameplay is still the best we seen so being able to play a 3-D game with a similar feeling too old UO is definatly a winner in my eyes.
