What is so amazing about Darkfall?

altairzqaltairzq Member Posts: 3,811

Watching the videos, honestly I can't see anything so amazing. In fact, the irony is that the best thing about Darkfall seems to be the graphics, and the worst, the gameplay.

So I'm asking the beta testers and actual players, what on earth is so amazing about it? Is it that you, for any reason, just love to run after a lone poor guy drinking potions and pressing LMB?

Is there anything else to this game? Yes? Then what?

Enlighten us, the so called "trolls".

Let me just tell you my perspective here. I'm not a beta tester but a prospective DF player who's more than halfway made the decision to get the game.

The givens I can tell you from watching the youtube vids are that the graphics are old (but its not cartoony so that is a plus to some extent), the sound effects are completely awful, the hit animations are boring and repetitive, tradeskills haven't been developed enough on yet, but the one thing that makes me curious about this game?

Full loot and non-level based MMOFPS. I've never played any game that has both of those things...Those two things, I think, are the main attractions of the game.

You gotta try the game before you judge it's combat.

It's something you have to do to believe.

I haven't played it yet but from what I've read it's more of a traditional MMO; harking back to the days of UO.

The most recent games of the "sandbox" kind I can think of are Eve Online & Shadowbane. Where you band together in large guilds/alliances and acquire territory, build cities, wage war to keep said territory. It's very different than games like WoW & LOTRO where you follow a linear path or story.

Whatever. The thread was called 'What is so amazing about Darkfall?' That implies he wants to know what makes the game attractive and what makes it stand out from the other games on the market.

I sold my LOTR and EQ2 accounts after having them for years.... the 2nd day i was playing beta.

Tab target negates so much player skill, i can't stand it anymore.

In the videos we see usually, the chars are not skilled up in running max either.  I was able to hit 50 run skill during my brief time in beta, and there's a wolrd of difference of how fast you can run.   That slow/sluggish look of combat in youtube videos?  It's of people using the slowest missile-magic spell available, and with the slowest runspeed availalbe.

I have posted lists in many other threads. Look at the feature list and you will known what we all like about the game. Boats, city building, massive politics, ffa full loot pvp, amazing game world, stealth through sneaking, archery, mounted combat, no targeting skill, twitch combat, tactics and terrain involvment in large scale pvp, ect, ect.........

How does everyone know it's amazing if most of the play testing has been done with un-developed characters??

If by everyone, you were referring to me?    The skills were there... mobs had them, a few macroers had them, merchants sold them....  just cause they didn't give us enough time to max out our chars then we weren't able to tell if the game was good or not?

My two cents, and I'll use some SOE examples based from what I see from your Avatar

Take EQ2 which I've played on-and-off since launch. Its now a wonderful, flesh-out world packed to the brim with quests, MOB's and fluff (crafting, decorating houses, etc). For me, EQ2 is the most mature MMORPG out there. But the core gameplay is always the same, get a quest, kill the MOBs, rinse and repeat. Please don't think this is a flame as EQ2 does questing extremely well, However it gets repetitive and unless your playing on a PVP server, your charater is relatively safe in the world. A player can control the amount of danger/risk faced pretty easiely by controlling mob pulls, avoiding certain Heroic content, etc.

Now jump to Planetside, another SOE game that I played. This was a fast and furious FPS-based MMORPG. Some would argue that it wasn't an MMORPG at all but I would disagree as it had levels, experience and different character paths. A wonderful game that was ruined by core gameplay changes (bending and BFR's).

I'm not even going to mention SWG Pre-NGE.

I'm excited about this game for a few reasons.

    1)  Its a throwback to a UO-style of gameplay

    2) Full PVP loot

    3) Skill based vs Level based

    4) A alignment systems that gives some accountability to PVP

    5) A constant level of danger during gameplay

    6) No group drama, character nerf drama, etc

    7) Loot does not define your character

    8) Twitch gaming (like Planetside) with an indepth character advancement system

    9) No enemy radar/tab targeting - all charcters can sneak up/sneak away from others

Just a few reasons why this game appeals to me. I'm tired of the same WOW/EQ-like gameplay and I much prefer gameplay over graphics. So long as the Admins can address issues of lag, hacking, botting and can make sure that all players can compete on the same playing field - I'll be happy!

I did play in beta. I don't know if you can say its amazing. It is a breath of fresh air after all the games that want to try to recreate the winning WoW formula.

The combat is much different than most of the games out. You don't target and spam your special sword moves while bunny hopping circle straffing.  You put your crosshairs on your target and try to hit it, they can move before you actually do. So i think the combat is much more manuvering and stamina awarness.

You don't have classes so you can be anything you want. So you only need and get 1 character per server. So you reputation actually matters ( no more logging my alt on so i can safely gank

There is no stealth but you can use the cover of terrain. So sneaking up on someone actually requires you to get skillfull in using cover and terrian, not just hitting your stealth button.

The mobs have some crazy AI, not sure if they are bugged sometimes lol. The goblins will run off if they are hurt and kite you , if they kill you they seem camp you body so nobody can rez you.

If you liked Shadowbane and UO. They there would be a high probability that you will like DarkFall.
