I have to agree, Darkfall's world is absolutely breathtaking, but Vanguard still ranks in, for MMOs I've played, as the most beautiful world in an MMO.

I guess I simply can't explain it to you then. I had to constantly watch my back, the entire time I was ingame. Never had to do that with an MMO before, not really even in Ultima Online. I couldn't look behind me when I was running, I could hear battle sounds in all directions all around me, even though they were off in the distance. I could control each and every swing I made with my crappy leafblade, and was able to actively dodge attacks and strafe arrows and magic attacks.
So yeah, to me that is much more entertaining then the lot of the other MMOs that I have played, if you can't understand that then you never will.

I played VG from release for over a year. I loved it. I loved the graphics and thought they were osme of the best. definately better than DF. I think darkfalls world design is MUCH better though. IMO.
I'm still waiting on the psychological society jumping forth telling us this is all part of an experimental demonstration of "malleability of young minds" ala "The Wave"

Not true. I've played just about every MMO out there. Vanguard, currently, is the BEST PvE MMO on the market. But, if you have any interest in PvP, I'd stay away.

Well as I sit in my boring invertebrate paleontology class, exhausted because I only got 3 hours of sleep last night (yes, Darkfall IS that addicting), I figured I'd give you guys the story of my first day.
So the servers finally went live, after about 13 hours of sitting around my computer on vent with my guildies, praying that it would happen anytime now. I entered the game, created my male Mirdain (the elf-like people) and spawned in the starting city our guild designated for my race. When the game loaded I maxed out my resolution (since I had already read up on the controls), increased the amount of sounds/vegatation/etc, turned off shadows (which was recommended to me by my guildies), and applied the settings.
My god is the world beautiful. The elven starting city I was in was absolutely astonishing. No, I haven't played Vanguard, which I hear has a beautiful world as well, but my god does Darkfall's world blow any others out of the water. As I looked up to the sky (which was unbelievable, again, better then any MMO sky I've ever seen), it started changing from day to night, with such fluidity I was amazed.
Moving on.... I went to the quest giver and got my two noobie goblin quests. I looked at my map and saw where the goblins spawned, equipped my leafblade (the crappiest POS ever by the way), and made my way to the goblins.
Yeah, there was about 50 Mirdain trying to kill the few goblins there (and I didn't lag whatsoever, by the way), so I booked it south and found a couple of goblin patches away from most people (took me about 10 minutes running, this world is friggin' HUGE and when you start off, takes forever to get anywhere, more about this soon).
So after finding the goblins, I began my task. While strafing, dodging attacks, arrows, and magic spells, I slowly began to gain my ground, eventualy killing around 11 goblins in a span of about 40 minutes (down times early on take quite some time to recover stamina and health, and stamina is a NECESSITY!).
Boy should I have gone back and sold all the crap I had (about 8 bows, 7 swords, the 4 goblin axes I needed for a quest, 65 or so gold)..... because right when I finished my 12th goblin, BAM, I got nailed with an arrow from a Mahirim that must have spent 1 1/2 hours going from his starter city (right above me) south. BAM again, my headset exploding with sound.
Now I'm in panic mode. I look at my stamina, and it's on empty. Crap, I think to myself, I'm screwed. I run to the river, jump in, and try to swim across. The elven city, my safety, is only a few minutes walk away!
It's too late though, being caught off guard with no stamina and low health ended my first life in game, and all my hard loot I had spent close to an hour trying to gather was laid to waste for a wandering Mahirim to steal.
Ok, we're doing some molds of fossils in class now so I'll go over my next 5-6 hours of in-game experience later. This was merely my first 1 hour and 20 minutes I got to play before the servers crashed for about an hour.
Initial impressions. The world is unbelievably beautiful, including the sky, and immerses you so incredibly much. The sound is not nearly as bad as you would think (I love the music by the way), and the "3d surround sound" aspect, where you can tell what direction things are in, is very friggin' cool.
Combat is a LOT of fun. I will agree the animations (only some of them mind you), could use some work, but I have never had so much fun in the beginning on an MMO in my entire life since Ultima Online.
Finally, I've never looked behind me so much, scared to death at the sound of a mana missle or arrow flying by behind me, in any MMO in my life, INCLUDING Ultima Online. This game is truly going to be epic, and I am at ease now (since you haters were starting to get to me) and dying to get out of class just to play it.

I'm probably considered by most of you to be a rabid Darkfall fanboy, and I have no trouble admitting that Darkfall does not measure up to the beautiful world that Vanguard has. I hold it as the best MMO world on the market right now, with Darkfall following it. I'd compare it more to, Vanguard looking like Oblivion and Darkfall looking like Morrowind (upgraded, of course, but I meant feel of the world, dark and alien)

Since my WoW times, I have tried a number of MMOs, including AoC and War and Eve.
The first time I went into contested terriority in WoW I remember being so scared reading about all the ganking and corpse camping that I was literally so enthralled and wrapped up in the world. The first few hours of playing that game I loved it and then going into PvP land made it even more fun.
That feeling eventually wore off and I NEVER experienced it again in any of the MMOs I tried post WoW, until darkfall. War, AoC were just the same boring stuff right from the beginning and the combat in EvE is just not my style, at all.
However, the first time I had a bag full-o-loot and I ran into an enemy race trying to run me down I have never had such a rush. EVERY PvP encounter for me has me on the edge of my seat. I get that rush every time I fight someone.
Combat is shallow, there is no arguing that. However, it is MUCH more entertaining than almost any combat in WoW because I find myself watching my screen and my enemies rather than just targetting them and watching my cool downs. I could never play a ranged DPS character before darkfall because you really are just starting at your bars. However, in DF, I have to actually aim my shots and lead my enemies. I am definitely going ranged in DF.
Let me tell you, killing goblins in this game is unlike killing any goblins in any of the games I listed above. Although, can't say I ran into many goblins in my short time playing Eve.
The servers during beta were stable. . .at least they didn't crash, but they were definitely taken down often. But right now, they are obviously having some serious problems. I don't get what people think the world is "beautiful." It's nice, but outdated. . .however, gameplay >>>>>>>>> graphics, in my book.
Huge combat (when we have like 40 v 20) going on was a lag fest. Hopefully this was due to logging, but it is a big fear in my book for this game.
There are certainly a ton of minor, albeit annoying, bugs. It is definitely rough around the edges and it is going to be exploited and macroed for quite some time. . . but that is not as important as core gameplay and overall design.
But even with all the negatives I was still frantically refreshing my web page trying to get my preorder in. If you enjoy FPS games and you enjoy MMOs, this game is certainly worth a look. It is VERY different than any MMO I have played and I find it many times more engaging. But the world is harsh and the players can be some serious bastards.
I just hope that the servers get stable in the next day or two. I am worried, but I want this game to succeed because I have had some serious fun playing.

What people were referring to were the inconsistency of the graphics in certain areas in vanguard. Some area's looked great well textures while other chunks in parts of the world the textures looked poor. I have no idea if SOE has addressed this yet.
Well I played Vanguard with a buddy key, and it was the most boring game I have ever played, and I have played quite a few. I thought I was in a old folks home when I was playing it. And I am 50 yrs old. I play Eve and love it, in fact I beta tested Eve. I was quite disappointed when they changed Darkfall to pre-orders, from open beta. I don't ever pay to try out a game before I buy it. I really liked your post OP, and wish they would go with a free trial or buddy keys or something.

I wouldnt worry about the lag. I was in a 30vs40ish fight and I had 60ish fps and like 160 ping from the US. Good post though.

Well as I sit in my boring invertebrate paleontology class, exhausted because I only got 3 hours of sleep last night (yes, Darkfall IS that addicting), I figured I'd give you guys the story of my first day. So the servers finally went live, after about 13 hours of sitting around my computer on vent with my guildies, praying that it would happen anytime now. I entered the game, created my male Mirdain (the elf-like people) and spawned in the starting city our guild designated for my race. When the game loaded I maxed out my resolution (since I had already read up on the controls), increased the amount of sounds/vegatation/etc, turned off shadows (which was recommended to me by my guildies), and applied the settings. My god is the world beautiful. The elven starting city I was in was absolutely astonishing. No, I haven't played Vanguard, which I hear has a beautiful world as well, but my god does Darkfall's world blow any others out of the water. As I looked up to the sky (which was unbelievable, again, better then any MMO sky I've ever seen), it started changing from day to night, with such fluidity I was amazed. Moving on.... I went to the quest giver and got my two noobie goblin quests. I looked at my map and saw where the goblins spawned, equipped my leafblade (the crappiest POS ever by the way), and made my way to the goblins. Yeah, there was about 50 Mirdain trying to kill the few goblins there (and I didn't lag whatsoever, by the way), so I booked it south and found a couple of goblin patches away from most people (took me about 10 minutes running, this world is friggin' HUGE and when you start off, takes forever to get anywhere, more about this soon). So after finding the goblins, I began my task. While strafing, dodging attacks, arrows, and magic spells, I slowly began to gain my ground, eventualy killing around 11 goblins in a span of about 40 minutes (down times early on take quite some time to recover stamina and health, and stamina is a NECESSITY!). Boy should I have gone back and sold all the crap I had (about 8 bows, 7 swords, the 4 goblin axes I needed for a quest, 65 or so gold)..... because right when I finished my 12th goblin, BAM, I got nailed with an arrow from a Mahirim that must have spent 1 1/2 hours going from his starter city (right above me) south. BAM again, my headset exploding with sound. Now I'm in panic mode. I look at my stamina, and it's on empty. Crap, I think to myself, I'm screwed. I run to the river, jump in, and try to swim across. The elven city, my safety, is only a few minutes walk away! It's too late though, being caught off guard with no stamina and low health ended my first life in game, and all my hard loot I had spent close to an hour trying to gather was laid to waste for a wandering Mahirim to steal.
Ok, we're doing some molds of fossils in class now so I'll go over my next 5-6 hours of in-game experience later. This was merely my first 1 hour and 20 minutes I got to play before the servers crashed for about an hour. Initial impressions. The world is unbelievably beautiful, including the sky, and immerses you so incredibly much. The sound is not nearly as bad as you would think (I love the music by the way), and the "3d surround sound" aspect, where you can tell what direction things are in, is very friggin' cool. Combat is a LOT of fun. I will agree the animations (only some of them mind you), could use some work, but I have never had so much fun in the beginning on an MMO in my entire life since Ultima Online. Finally, I've never looked behind me so much, scared to death at the sound of a mana missle or arrow flying by behind me, in any MMO in my life, INCLUDING Ultima Online. This game is truly going to be epic, and I am at ease now (since you haters were starting to get to me) and dying to get out of class just to play it.
wow this must be the MOST AWESOME MMO ever created!! The only little bad point you mention is the poor animations. OMG Aventurine has delivered everything they promised. Everyone play DARKFALL!!

It's a great game. Needs some polish but the dev's are all working hard and are in it for the long haul.
I have been playing since February 1 and have had the most fun than any other MMO I have ever played. Fighting the AI is never boring. Fear of being ambushed will make your heart skip a beat.
The game becomes even more fun when you become part of a clan. The lack of a level based system is so wonderful in the sense that you and your guildies are not restricted with who can come along and areas that are not blocked off to you due to level restrictions, etc. When your clan owns a city and you contribute your blood and sweat to it's growth...well you will defend it to the death when raiding parties come rolling in. On the flip side, having participated in a 50 player battle to attack someone else' city and hamlet was truely epic. On max settings I was holding steady at 40 fps (normally 80-100) with my 8800 gts (320mb) video card.
I'm at work and all I can do is think of Darkfall. Hope you all have fun in-game.

I have to agree, Darkfall's world is absolutely breathtaking, but Vanguard still ranks in, for MMOs I've played, as the most beautiful world in an MMO.

I have to agree with him. OP of all other new mmos you tried before was not a blast the first hours? lotro, war and aoc example?
I mean. he just went out. killed some mobs and get ganked. Then server crashed and then he made topic how giood it is etc. its funny
I guess I simply can't explain it to you then. I had to constantly watch my back, the entire time I was ingame. Never had to do that with an MMO before, not really even in Ultima Online. I couldn't look behind me when I was running, I could hear battle sounds in all directions all around me, even though they were off in the distance. I could control each and every swing I made with my crappy leafblade, and was able to actively dodge attacks and strafe arrows and magic attacks.
So yeah, to me that is much more entertaining then the lot of the other MMOs that I have played, if you can't understand that then you never will.

I played VG from release for over a year. I loved it. I loved the graphics and thought they were osme of the best. definately better than DF. I think darkfalls world design is MUCH better though. IMO.
I'm still waiting on the psychological society jumping forth telling us this is all part of an experimental demonstration of "malleability of young minds" ala "The Wave"

Not true. I've played just about every MMO out there. Vanguard, currently, is the BEST PvE MMO on the market. But, if you have any interest in PvP, I'd stay away.

I tried the free trial of Vanguard the other day. On max settings i was not impressed. I much prefer Darkfalls gameworld and the graphical style of the world.
So, it took you about an hour and a half to gather some loot, including some quest loot and you lost it all in a 5 minute or so gank? And this is fun?

You're calling him a rabid fanboy because he said out of every game he's play Darkfall has had the best looking world? He explicitly said that he had never played Vanguard, as a precaution for all those saying "You're lying, nuh uh, Vanguard is prettier!" But I guess anyone that likes Darkfall is a rabid fanboy.
I'm probably considered by most of you to be a rabid Darkfall fanboy, and I have no trouble admitting that Darkfall does not measure up to the beautiful world that Vanguard has. I hold it as the best MMO world on the market right now, with Darkfall following it. I'd compare it more to, Vanguard looking like Oblivion and Darkfall looking like Morrowind (upgraded, of course, but I meant feel of the world, dark and alien)

Have been in beta since the 22nd of January.
I can't really call myself an oldschool MMO player, because I played diablo I, thought it sucked (which it did) and then never looked at the genre again until a friend got me into WoW.
Since my WoW times, I have tried a number of MMOs, including AoC and War and Eve.
The first time I went into contested terriority in WoW I remember being so scared reading about all the ganking and corpse camping that I was literally so enthralled and wrapped up in the world. The first few hours of playing that game I loved it and then going into PvP land made it even more fun.
That feeling eventually wore off and I NEVER experienced it again in any of the MMOs I tried post WoW, until darkfall. War, AoC were just the same boring stuff right from the beginning and the combat in EvE is just not my style, at all.
However, the first time I had a bag full-o-loot and I ran into an enemy race trying to run me down I have never had such a rush. EVERY PvP encounter for me has me on the edge of my seat. I get that rush every time I fight someone.
Combat is shallow, there is no arguing that. However, it is MUCH more entertaining than almost any combat in WoW because I find myself watching my screen and my enemies rather than just targetting them and watching my cool downs. I could never play a ranged DPS character before darkfall because you really are just starting at your bars. However, in DF, I have to actually aim my shots and lead my enemies. I am definitely going ranged in DF.
Let me tell you, killing goblins in this game is unlike killing any goblins in any of the games I listed above. Although, can't say I ran into many goblins in my short time playing Eve.
The servers during beta were stable. . .at least they didn't crash, but they were definitely taken down often. But right now, they are obviously having some serious problems. I don't get what people think the world is "beautiful." It's nice, but outdated. . .however, gameplay >>>>>>>>> graphics, in my book.
Huge combat (when we have like 40 v 20) going on was a lag fest. Hopefully this was due to logging, but it is a big fear in my book for this game.
There are certainly a ton of minor, albeit annoying, bugs. It is definitely rough around the edges and it is going to be exploited and macroed for quite some time. . . but that is not as important as core gameplay and overall design.
But even with all the negatives I was still frantically refreshing my web page trying to get my preorder in. If you enjoy FPS games and you enjoy MMOs, this game is certainly worth a look. It is VERY different than any MMO I have played and I find it many times more engaging. But the world is harsh and the players can be some serious bastards.
I just hope that the servers get stable in the next day or two. I am worried, but I want this game to succeed because I have had some serious fun playing.

What people were referring to were the inconsistency of the graphics in certain areas in vanguard. Some area's looked great well textures while other chunks in parts of the world the textures looked poor. I have no idea if SOE has addressed this yet.
Well I played Vanguard with a buddy key, and it was the most boring game I have ever played, and I have played quite a few. I thought I was in a old folks home when I was playing it. And I am 50 yrs old. I play Eve and love it, in fact I beta tested Eve. I was quite disappointed when they changed Darkfall to pre-orders, from open beta. I don't ever pay to try out a game before I buy it. I really liked your post OP, and wish they would go with a free trial or buddy keys or something.
I wouldnt worry about the lag. I was in a 30vs40ish fight and I had 60ish fps and like 160 ping from the US. Good post though.
