Have been in beta since the 22nd of January. I can't really call myself an oldschool MMO player, because I played diablo I, thought it sucked (which it did) and then never looked at the genre again until a friend got me into WoW. Since my WoW times, I have tried a number of MMOs, including AoC and War and Eve. The first time I went into contested terriority in WoW I remember being so scared reading about all the ganking and corpse camping that I was literally so enthralled and wrapped up in the world. The first few hours of playing that game I loved it and then going into PvP land made it even more fun.
That feeling eventually wore off and I NEVER experienced it again in any of the MMOs I tried post WoW, until darkfall. War, AoC were just the same boring stuff right from the beginning and the combat in EvE is just not my style, at all. However, the first time I had a bag full-o-loot and I ran into an enemy race trying to run me down I have never had such a rush. EVERY PvP encounter for me has me on the edge of my seat. I get that rush every time I fight someone. Combat is shallow, there is no arguing that. However, it is MUCH more entertaining than almost any combat in WoW because I find myself watching my screen and my enemies rather than just targetting them and watching my cool downs. I could never play a ranged DPS character before darkfall because you really are just starting at your bars. However, in DF, I have to actually aim my shots and lead my enemies. I am definitely going ranged in DF. Let me tell you, killing goblins in this game is unlike killing any goblins in any of the games I listed above. Although, can't say I ran into many goblins in my short time playing Eve. The servers during beta were stable. . .at least they didn't crash, but they were definitely taken down often. But right now, they are obviously having some serious problems. I don't get what people think the world is "beautiful." It's nice, but outdated. . .however, gameplay >>>>>>>>> graphics, in my book. Huge combat (when we have like 40 v 20) going on was a lag fest. Hopefully this was due to logging, but it is a big fear in my book for this game. There are certainly a ton of minor, albeit annoying, bugs. It is definitely rough around the edges and it is going to be exploited and macroed for quite some time. . . but that is not as important as core gameplay and overall design. But even with all the negatives I was still frantically refreshing my web page trying to get my preorder in. If you enjoy FPS games and you enjoy MMOs, this game is certainly worth a look. It is VERY different than any MMO I have played and I find it many times more engaging. But the world is harsh and the players can be some serious bastards. I just hope that the servers get stable in the next day or two. I am worried, but I want this game to succeed because I have had some serious fun playing. I hope that was an objective review for some.
This post is funny. The OP spends time killing mobs and collecting loot, only to have it taken away when someone sees that his stamina and health are low and ganks him. Yeah sounds like fun. But how about after the 100th time?
Sure it's fun raping someone of their hard earned plunder. But getting raped isn't so fun. Getting gang raped is even less fun.
I look forward to reading a nice, balanced review on this game. Certainly the genre needs a success story about now, but is Darkfall it?

that's what wrong with people these days back in uo .
stuff like this never got old .
and yes getting ganked isn't fun ...getting payback is.
unless you''ve experiecnced it there really is not a way to expalin how much of an edge it adds how emersive and just plain fun an open world pvp game is

if you do the same thing over and over again and never learn from your experience you are an idiot and deserve to lose your stuff.
you need to go into this game, not expecting to lose everything, but knowing you WILL lose it all... but that you will also take it all some times.
Some of us take the day off work and wait all day. The servers finally come up at 2AM. They are up and down for the next 2 hours.
Everyone who rolled a human bound to two of the three human starting cities finds they can not log back in on their character after they crash or log out once. After staying up all night and not being able to log in for 30 minutes to 3 hours, they delete their characters, forfeiting their gold, their time, and their character names. They create new characters and bind to a different NPC city.
No one can hit anything because of the sync issues. Monsters and players skip around the screen and constantly go invisible. Many cannot even see their own groupmates.
People who were supposed to get accounts have not even been able to log in, including several volunteer community moderaters who have been volunteering their time for Aventurine for the past 3-5 years.
Despite all this, Darkfall is still the most promising MMORPG on the market today. However, since they are not selling any more accounts indefinately, I am not sure it can really be called "on the market".

What makes it so much more entertaining is that dying sucks. I remember farming in WoW I could literally pay half attention the whole time and talk to my gf while hitting the same buttons in succession. If someone came up and killed me. . .oh well, I have to run back to my body. That might kind of suck, but hardly considering gy are everywhere.
This game I could be an hour run from where I am spawn when I die and I could have a ton of stuff on me. There is something on the line when you PvP, which is what draws you in. I don't gank or get ganked all the time. . . but when those PvP events happen, I am trying my hardest to stay alive instead of saying "well, if I die and rez at the gy, I don't have to run back to town."
I am not 100% sure that darkfall will be a success. First, even if it were in it's perfect form, it is not for everyone. Most people don't like losing their stuff when they die. It has some serious problems and I am not convinced that what would make this game really stand out among the rest (the huge battles) is actually possible.
sounds like a memory from beta. You failed to mention the dozens of 'frozen' people in every starter town. Everything I've seen is a bunch of people who can't move, seeing a lot of other people who can't move.
God I don't know about anyone else but I don't know what to take serious anymore. Is this a review of a obsesed fanboi who thinks DF is the second coming or the rantings of a troll just bashing the game for kicks. Until they offer a free demo version guess I'll just steer clear of this one.
I played beta and this is a reviewer i can agree with.

Forgot to say, I was a beta tester, so forgive me if I am not all starry eyed with wonder at the cool features (and there are a LOT). Just bummed out at all the incredible gayness in my own "First Day Impressions and Experience".

Same.... while I can relate to the adrenaline rush he says he experienced (most open PVP worlds DO inspire one hell of an adrenaline rush) I find it very difficult to swallow (based on youtube vids, screenshots etc already released about the game) that the games graphics are nearly as stunning as he states.
Personally I'm waiting for a free trial before passing any sort of judgement... or paying any money... on/for this game.

It's a give/take relationship. I ganked some people, some people ganked me. When I get stronger and my guild gets more organized in game (i.e. having a city/etc), it will become even MORE fun when we go hunting for people in the wilds.
I'll state this very clearly, Darkfall IS NOT for everyone, and a lot of people will hate it because of it's game mechanics and rule sets.
I, however, have been waiting for a game like this for years (I thought AoC might be it, but was unbelievably sadly mistaken), but Darkfall has given me hope again for the MMO market. 4 friggin' hours until I get out of work, and I have never been itching to play a MMO and get done with my day responsibilities so much in the history of my gaming. Believe me or not, call me a fanboy or whatever you want to call it, but I play MMOs for "fun", and I had a friggin' blast last night.
To the op. My rig is about the same as yours if not a tad bit better. My question.
Why leave the shadows off. The game doesnt demand much and with a rig that can push crysis why are you avoiding it.? Or does it have a huge impact on preformance?
Watching Fanbois drop their soap in a prison full of desperate men.

I think there is something messed up with shadows right now, because it decreases performance a lot I've been told. I'll go home tonight and turn on shadows and see what happens and get back at you.
Plus, night time is dark as the dickens, if the shadows are on, you literally cannot see anything too far in front of you, which can be good if you're hunting people, but very, very bad if you're the hunted.
So, it took you about an hour and a half to gather some loot, including some quest loot and you lost it all in a 5 minute or so gank? And this is fun?
Absolutely. Plus, I've never had such an adrenaline rush in any MMO, ever, and that was one instance of a bunch of adrenaline pumped action.

Not sure if this is sarcasm or you being sincere, but yes, I had fun the whole time. While I was upset I lost the potential gold I would have gotten from selling my items that I lost, I gained a decent amount of levels of skill in "Run", "Sprint", "Rest", "Armor Proficiency", and some others. Plus, it allowed me to begin to fine-tune my skill in the game, which is separate from items and "skill level" of your specific skills. I learned tactics of how to dodge attacks and strike back at the right time in the right direction.

that's probably because the main goal in MMOs is to achieve immersion...for adrenaline-related effects, FPSs are miles ahead.
Oh, there's plenty of immersion, trust me. The world alone immediately immersed me into the game, with all the grass blowing in the wind, the trees swaying in the wind, the night and day cycle, the battle sounds all around you in the distance, the sound of animals and mobs moaning, the eerie ruins and abandoned fortresses, the feeling like you are going to get killed when passing any major tree or rock or shadow, it's all very immersive.
I played today for a few hours and will give my impression here:
The graphic is OK, but the world is very very nice, it is all of a peace. All the objects, trees, houses, rocks etc. are believeable placed and the colors fits together. This is absolutly not true for Vanguard. In Vanguard most objects are misplaced and the colors fits not with the surrounding (this is my opinion!).
The engine creates a good and !believeable! ambience, the sky is really lovely and never boring.
The trees are very well designed, no textures that cicle while you surround the tree (like in Vanguard/AoC).
The only MMORPG (that I played) that has a similar quality in this category is LOTRO.
But not all is possitive. There is only a 3:4 ratio supported. So in widescreen resolution the whole screen is strechted (the UI not) and I for one can not play with this without getting ill. So I play with huge borders left and right and will hope, they will add support for widescreens soonTM).
For me (VISTA64 with a GeForce8800GTS 512MB driver 181.x) all objects/models have a dark "aura" of a few pixels when "Post processing" is on (similar to EQ2). This is very annoying but I must and can live with that.
The gameplay without targeting and with friendly fire, the freedom, the risk and the possibilities to develop my character is what makes this game amazing and I know I will play it many months.
My conclussion is that Agon is the most believaeable world in my MMORPG history. And this is for me one of the most important aspects for a MMORPG.
And sry for my not so fluid english, its not my foreign language.

if I want to PvP all the time, i usually pick an FPS. An MMO should offer a wider dimension of game experience.
