I'm creating this post in hopes that some experienced MMO players of all genres can help the developers of Jumpgate Evolution avoid a quick and utter disaster once they launch.
In the newest Dev chat log, it was stated that PvP in a SPACE-MMO (Think a dog-fighting version of EvE for a very simplistic view of the game) should not be open. It's going to have lots of safe zones (EvE got it right with technically no safe-zones, just high security in some) and INSTANCED PvP! In a space MMO? This completely breaks immersion and tactical operations of guilds who want to wage combat/economic warfare on each other. I mean the Goons from EvE just took out the once invincible BoB with sly and cunning tactics. JGE will eliminate those possibilities with this WoW-like approach to a space-fighting MMO.
Anyways, if you are interested in helping or just want to state your own opinion, follow this think and read this post. It puts JGE's developers faults into a perfect constructive argument.

With only 3 and a bit months till the game is supposed to release i wouldnt hold much hope for change. Things would be pretty much set in stone by now if they intend to meet their release date. Their official forums seem to be in uproar atm and no word from the devs that i can tell.
There is just too many things to change (friendly fire, some sort of death penalty, pirating, remove rewards from instances if not remove instances etc). Which is kinda disappointing as i was looking forward to the game and had Elite/Freelance in mind not WAR in space.
I know how you feel my pilot comrade...it almost seems impossible.
But they have stated that there will be no open-pvp or multi-factional parties for the start of beta. This gives me hope in the way that they still have the ability to give thier core-gamer base a shard of rules we would enjoy (in PvP, death, and grouping). It adds so many new layers of guild/squad dynamics when you do this. I'm not saying be as harsh as EvE is, but look at the success and wonderful things that come out of that open ended and free space game! BoB just got taken out by covert tactics! I want things like that...true military/economic warfare that don't rely on medals and loot but strategy, reconsisance, and military precision. These are what define Space Flight Simulators. I just hope they gives us that option.
Instanced pvp? no Free roaming pvp?
Wtf?
WoW i thought this game was going to be like eve but with low risk pvp and twitch combat.
Who the hell wants to play a space game with instanced pvp? why wouldn't you just play a multiplayer space game instead?
Way to kill the game before the start.
EVE>JGE
Playing: Nothing
Looking forward to: Nothing
There is open world pvp but the fear is that just like WAR everyone will be grinding instances because they give the best rewards (xp,loot etc) and as we know most gamers follow the path of least resistance.
What really annoys me is no cargo loss on death just to appease the soloer's. If you want to haul cargo get an escort. Making a game with 0 risk is just the safe and boring option.
You would think these guys would learn from other's mistakes. In Mythic's latest game, WoW: The PVP Servers (aka, Warhammer) they put in scenarios..Seriously, In a game about global domination war is everywhere realm vs realm blah blah blah, they felt they needed instanced pvp zones so players would have a place to PVP.
So Net Devil decides to put out WoW: The Space Chronicles. I'm tellin you folks, Post WoW, forget about it. Its gonna be this way for a long time with all new games. And as is the case with all the other games, the decision is made. No pettitions, no feed back, nothing; is going to change their minds.
I fully agree...the biggest problem is the ND devs aren't even acknowleding they're 9 year core fanbase who are all crying bloody murder! The thing is, if you check my links, these posts are not over the top flames against the devs.
They are well though out posts with concrete facts about past game using this instanced pvp/ reward system as you guys have put it. WAR = failed and killed RvR for them, now they are trying to fix that and I wish them luck. AoC = failed with a totally broken PvP mechanic and system.
Seriously, EvE has 250k with only ONE server running. That means they are going to be around for awhile and are extremely successful for thier niche. Jesus christ JGE why wouldn't you take a seat in the space MMOG niche with a different flavor of twitch based combat and some community differences? I guess they think EvE isn't successful enough and the only way to survive is to follow WoW's approach (which every game that has is now near life support).
bump
The original Jumpgate had instanced PvP as well. Apparently the sequel is adopting a similar system. But now that NetDevil has confirmed open PvP is a major part of the game and told us a little bit of their plans, have your fears been alleviated a bit?
It is not my intention to argue with you Axxar, but I do not see how instanced pvp belongs in a game centered around PVP. And then to give rewards for it is insane. I could understand if it was just for fun, a place for a quick pvp fix, where you get nothing out of it. PVP instances worked in WoW, It did not work in WoW: The PVP Servers.

Hopefully Netdevil is indeed listening.
No argument obbjob - I totally get what you mean. I don't mind there being rewards though, as long as the rewards are miniscule compared to what you would gain from open PvP, as well as not being as good.
Long post...
3 cows are standing in line in a slaughter house. The first Cow named Funcom is slaughtered. The second cow, Mythic, is slaughtered. The next cow named Net Devil thinks to himself, not gonna happen to me, The outcome will be diffrent....*BANG* The end..
After Funcom and Mythic sold their games via false advertising campaigns, they suffered staggering losses within the first 2 months. Now, with the Darkfall fiasco going on, I do not see how any of the businesses in the MMO industry are not rethinking strategies. This industry has risen substantialy in popularity over the years, and is hands down the best entertainment value for a lot of folks as far as bang for your buck. I do not understand why any of these guys have forums on their websites as it appears the only way as consumers we can communicate with devs is with our money. They don't listen when the fans say this is a bad idea, or you guys are going in the wrong direction.
If companies continue to go this way, the industry is going to slip away into obscurity. People are simply going to pass on everything, and when someone finaly comes out with a concept that is not WoW in *choose enviornment* they are going to be hard pressed to find anyone to back them and invest in the game.
Also people have lives outside of games. I work, and with SCA I have a fighter practice once or twice a week at least one weekend a month is spent at events / tournaments, and I spend 2 weeks a year at wars. I am really interested in playing airsoft now. In order for me to do that I have to come up with a lot of scratch to buy the gear, weapons ammo ect. Is it going to be worth it to me to pay a monthly sub, + box cost to a game that I have already played and quit because I was sick of it, just because it is in a diffrent enviornment?
In the end these companies..Businesses, are going to be hurting. This is their profession, their market , their industry. It's not like being a server where if the restaraunt closes you just go to the next one and get a job there. If there is no industry what are they going to do?
Seriously..Let WoW alone. Develope your own games, and use your own new exciting ideas. Do something innovative in application as well as on paper. Grab your target audience and keep them entertained. You will not get all of WoW's customers, so why do you all keep trying?
Except there is NO space-ship sci-fi game ever done in wow style. The setting can make a huge difference. WAR/AOC are fantasy and too similar to WOW but JGE may not.
Why would they want the niche market when there is a bigger one (space MMORPG with WOW type PvE content & PvP set up)?
Newsflash:
Eve already exist.
We don't need another one.
I am wondering if you can vet this out a little more. I understand the "zones" portion, but does this mean a player cannot declare themselves attack-able or overt (SWG terminology).
I guess this isn't a huge issue for me. As fas as Freelancer goes, that was pretty much a PVE game. I can't state for sure whether or not a pvp mod was ever released, but I do remember playing the universe mod for several years with friends back in 2002 (same time as I was hopelessly addicted to quake 3 arena).
Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.
Tried: WoW, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Everquest, WWII Online, Planetside
Beta: Lotro, Tabula Rasa, WAR.
