Well, after spending the last week or so praising Darkfall and even saying it could be a huge success with over a million subscribers potentially, I must finally concede to all the haters, and those who "knew" the game would not be good.
I have been following the game (though not extremely closely) for a few years, remembering the days when people really didn't know if the game would be made, and around 5 months ago I started following it closely.
I believed in the indie team at Aventurine. I believed that they wanted their own product to succeed and take down the EA's and Funcom's of the world in terms of the MMO genre to become the outright #2.
WOW WAS I WRONG.
Find my other posts on these forums: They are almost all been of praise, but I have had it with this company and their game. Here's a list of things that piss me off, coming from someone who has played the game for about 8 hours already:
1) Guard towers protecting noob zones are DUMB and they shoot lasers at you (no joke) 2) You are FORCED to be in 3rd person for melee. They should allow both. 3) Just like the beta testers had said, there are basically no monsters to fight. I totally understand the whole "you have to hunt for them" thing, but seriously, I don't just want to gank all day, I want some NPCs to skill up on. 4) The preorder fiasco. 5) The lack of communication from the Dev team. They give updates 4 hours after they say they will, leaving loyal fans pinned to their keyboards for info. 6) When you become evil from ganking and die, you are thrown 15 minutes away in a zone with no NPCs to talk/trade to and no bank that I know of; the only option I've seen is to kill other bad players and become good again. 7) A bug that has made the game unplayable since launch due to synching problems. You can't hit anything, player or monster, unless they stand still for a minute or you are lucky. (This would be OK because it's launch day but seriously? Only 40% of the limited preorder brought the server to its knees in synching issues) Don't get me wrong they did some great things like full loot, twitch based spell and archery, etc, but the places they fall short make this the worst $53 purchase I have ever made in my life. I would have done better to buy 212 packs of chewing gum. I give up on the MMO genre. It fails time after time after time. From Vanguard to Age of Conan to Darkfall to Tabula Rasa to Warhammer, games that were supposed to be better than anything else on the market WEREN'T. I credit Vanguard and Age of Conan for turning around and they are pretty good games now, but the genre today is WoW or bust. Most other games are buggy or dead. Hopefully in a few years it will become good again, because I really believe it is my favorite genre, at least conceptually, but WOW (no pun intended) have companies fallen short these days.

Your problem is your expecting the game to be amazing at launch.
I've said it dozens of times. All MMO's are NOT in their prime at release. 6 months in their "Decent', 1 year in they start to hit their prime.
It's simply not possible for them to test thing on a retail scale, work out the immense amount of bugs, and have the huge amount of content to keep people playing for months at a time, until that point.
The only games that this did not hold true for were the first MMOs, for obvious reasons.
But even then , take the original MMO games. Asherons Call for example was a shadow of itself at release, if u compared it to 6 months- 1 year in. Thats when the game really hit its prime. Even WoW hit its prime about a year in as well with BWL etc.
Notice all the posts popping up about how "AoC has improved and is actually fun now"... notice how many months its been?
Give it another 6 months and watch what people say about WAR.

This whole DFO thing is funny. I have an interest in the game but I am choosing to wait a few weeks to see what kind of progress is going to be made before I even think about buying it.
On one hand you have people, like some in this thread, that are AV fluffers in the background keeping smiles on the devs faces. On the other hand you have people that for some reason have this mentality that because they think they know, or have friends uncles that know, that the game sucks and they have this innate need to see it burn in the ninth ring of hell.
Then there is the OP. He comes on here and gives an honest opinion about what is going on with the game bringing out all this hostility from both sides. Every single post that even has DFO anywhere in it ends up like this. It really is sad. After all the shinies are no longer shiny and everything is old hat the community makes the game in my opinion. The community keeps the game going and so far from what I've read this game has zero longevity beyond the point where the shinies fade.
It's gotten to the point where some MMOs have been reduced to little more than success dispensers. Don't think. Don't challenge yourself. Do as little as possible... but still be rewarded for it. Yeah.. *that's* fun.

I basically said do not go in to the game with unreal expectations. If you expect an MMO game to be in great shape at release, your fooling yourself.
When I get an MMO, I plan to check it out for a month or two, but in all reality it would be foolish to think your going to be happy playing it for years at this point.
Some things will be broken. Some will be untested at the retail scale. Some things work out different in release (such as in WAR noone doing ORvR even tho there was loads of it in beta).
I also said its foolish to call a game a failure at release. Why? Because if you do that, you will be calling EVERY GAME a failure. Take the most successful MMO games ever - if it was released right now and the OP played it, he would likely call it a failure. But these are the same games that grew in to the best MMO's ever.
You could argue with me all you want, that's fine I do not mind.
But if you do so, start noticing the trend. A new MMO game comes out, you call it a failure and never go back, but notice how most of the time a year in people are saying the game improved and its actually good now.

Your problem is your expecting the game to be amazing at launch.
I've said it dozens of times. All MMO's are NOT in their prime at release. 6 months in their "Decent', 1 year in they start to hit their prime.
It's simply not possible for them to test thing on a retail scale, work out the immense amount of bugs, and have the huge amount of content to keep people playing for months at a time, until that point.
The only games that this did not hold true for were the first MMOs, for obvious reasons.
But even then , take the original MMO games. Asherons Call for example was a shadow of itself at release, if u compared it to 6 months- 1 year in. Thats when the game really hit its prime. Even WoW hit its prime about a year in as well with BWL etc.
Notice all the posts popping up about how "AoC has improved and is actually fun now"... notice how many months its been?
Give it another 6 months and watch what people say about WAR.

This whole DFO thing is funny. I have an interest in the game but I am choosing to wait a few weeks to see what kind of progress is going to be made before I even think about buying it.
On one hand you have people, like some in this thread, that are AV fluffers in the background keeping smiles on the devs faces. On the other hand you have people that for some reason have this mentality that because they think they know, or have friends uncles that know, that the game sucks and they have this innate need to see it burn in the ninth ring of hell.
Then there is the OP. He comes on here and gives an honest opinion about what is going on with the game bringing out all this hostility from both sides. Every single post that even has DFO anywhere in it ends up like this. It really is sad. After all the shinies are no longer shiny and everything is old hat the community makes the game in my opinion. The community keeps the game going and so far from what I've read this game has zero longevity beyond the point where the shinies fade.
It's gotten to the point where some MMOs have been reduced to little more than success dispensers. Don't think. Don't challenge yourself. Do as little as possible... but still be rewarded for it. Yeah.. *that's* fun.

I basically said do not go in to the game with unreal expectations. If you expect an MMO game to be in great shape at release, your fooling yourself.
When I get an MMO, I plan to check it out for a month or two, but in all reality it would be foolish to think your going to be happy playing it for years at this point.
Some things will be broken. Some will be untested at the retail scale. Some things work out different in release (such as in WAR noone doing ORvR even tho there was loads of it in beta).
I also said its foolish to call a game a failure at release. Why? Because if you do that, you will be calling EVERY GAME a failure. Take the most successful MMO games ever - if it was released right now and the OP played it, he would likely call it a failure. But these are the same games that grew in to the best MMO's ever.
You could argue with me all you want, that's fine I do not mind.
But if you do so, start noticing the trend. A new MMO game comes out, you call it a failure and never go back, but notice how most of the time a year in people are saying the game improved and its actually good now.
If you still hold a grudge from the release not being what you expected, there is noone else to blame but yourself, because I warned you of those expectations.

You were, however, justifying DF by claiming all the "hardcore" followers and "non-carebears" will play the game regardless of it's state, which you included yourself in.
