Darkfall - The Golden Tird
Be honest, darkfall is a turd. look at this "release", look at the character models, the animation and all the other valid complaints.
but it is a golden turd because no other current MMO's can compete. no other current MMO's have nearly as many of these golden features
- twitch combat
- massive seemless world
- sandbox character progression and crafting etc.
- friendly fire
- no more tank/healer/dps bollocks
- 10,000 concurrent users (we hope/doubt)
- city/shipbuilding
- viable long lasting exploration
- full loot
- optional factions
it doesn't matter how crap the rest of the game is, nothing else can compete so I and many will play it. its either play darkfall or wait and see if MO, ER fail as miserably.

Darkfall is a game with a lot of P O T E N T I A L
Considering its current state and that it took 8 years to develop it, I think Darkfall with show its full potential around 2012.

On a more serious note, don't hold your hopes too high for MO and other similar games..
Remember that this is a no zone world, with huge battles taking place simultaneously
The graphics are as good as it gets , but the animations could use an overhaul, thoug not my top priority.
MO is vaporware anyway. Trust me on this. SERIOUSLY.

Most of the people I've talked to about MO think it's being developed by Epic Games, so they don't ever speculate it being vaporware.
It won't be, but I don't think it's going to support the same thing as DFO in terms of large scale battles and big worlds. It'll deliver on a different scale.

I played EVE a lot and I love it. It's best game out there in terms of features and gameplay... But DF is a lot more fun and need a lot more skill involved than EVE. Played more than month and I must say it have a great potential. You must remember that EVE had years for polishing. Early days was not so shine. DF have a great potential and from what I saw they made engine that can accept many changes I experienced during my beta testing. It will be a lot better than EVE in short time. That's my personal opinion;p

MO is not being developped by Epic Games. It just uses the Unreal Engine which was developed by Epic games.
Its being developed by Star Vault an unknown Swedish dev.
The fact that most people *think* its being developped by Epic Games, and that the first thing you read in Wikipedia is Epic Games and there is not even a mention of Star Vault, adds to the vaporware theory.
MO is nothing but a bunch of pics based on the Unreal 3 Engine. not even a GUI on the pics or the video, nothing. No GUI is a good sign of vaporware.
MO IS A VIRAL MARKETING CAMPAIGN.
I followed Warhammer for over a year, and one of the last things to show up in screenshots and videos was the gui. What exactly is it supposed to a marketing campaign for??
I dont give a crap if a car I want to purchase has fine carinthian leather; if the engine doesnt work, its still crap and worthless.

Nice post, OP! Totally my thoughts too.
Once the game gets rid of it's initial problems they might even invest some moneys on motion capturing and proper character art. And if they would add some wildlife and random npc's as well it might one day be more than this golden turd. It is the material which wins over the shape so far, like you say. Just as gameplay and immersion win over eyecandy and pollishednes in my book.

They are just following the example of Darkfall and abusing it.
They want to create a loyal fanbase with virtually no info about the game (like Darkfall did), and MO will get delayed and delayed unto the years(like Darkfall did) but it will never deliver.
Instead, people with high profiles on the forums (like Darkfall 02ers 03ers 04ers etc) will in truth be paid trolls woth strong influence on the community.
Then they can use this community to promote anything they want.
Shifting the communities preferences into more mainstream games is one of the first things I can think of.
Yet another "Unknown indy developer = the game must be vaporware" prejudice. At least wait for that timer on the main page to run out to see what happens before jumping to conclusions like that.

Ive played darkfall a couple of hours today.. and i must say it IS a really fun game.. cant remember last time i got that excited in pvp :P and that is right from the start with only crap equipment on stakes.. =D
On the other hand MO vapour? would not think so, im from sweden and there has been several interviews on tv from there office and when they are developing and them devs seem really nice.. plus they got a great office and stuff like that
believe that will also be a game you must look out whenever it draws closer to release..

eve is too hard core for darkfall.
been talking to friends that bought darkfall. they all agree - if you don't want to pay to play a beta, don't buy it.
i for one, am not in the habit of encouraging companies to release games in that state.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
