Geforce 8800 GTX darkfall crash

mysterioussmysteriouss Member Posts: 8

Is there anyone who has a geforce 8800 GTX  vid card who has run Darkfall successfully? Mine gets to the character creation screen and just freezes permanently and sometimes gives BSOD.

Anyone have this same problem and/or know where the client crash log is stored?

Have you upgraded your video card drivers to the newest release?  Newest drivers were released on 2-18-09.

Assuming you use Win XP go Start/ Control Panel/ Administrative Tools/ Event Viewer and find the event. It's usually not much info but should show the address of the failure.

From reading the other posts relating to issues with the game yours sounds very familiar and I believe is intended to be addressed via patch soon.

Thanks and good suggestion but I have already installed the latest 2/18 drivers for this card.

Check it out...It's the Java error... you're not the only one, and it's not your GTX card.

looks like the patch fixed it!

  • mysterioussmysteriouss Member Posts: 8

Oops spoke too soon - still have the same problem. Maybe it was the 2nd patch that did it either that or it just worked for me that one time.

  • SDCramerSDCramer Member Posts: 15

Mine hasn't worked once, always crashes after I click play.

  • MimetteMimette Member Posts: 1

Same here; after clicking play it sends me right back to the Account login screen

I have a Geforce 8800 GTX too, and I have the newest driver installed

So my problem seems to apply to other 3D games as well. I downloaded quake 4 demo as a test and it crashes similarly. So it has something to do with my drivers I guess.. Any one else have other games crashing as well or is it just darkfall?

Runs great on my PC (8800 GTX release model) and my laptop (9800 GTS)

It might be your windows or your DirectX files. If its either one of them, it would be nearly impossible to "fix" it without completely reinstalling windows.

I used to have 8800GTX and for longest time SOME games (mass effect was worst) would just freeze and sometimes BSOD appeared.

    - I reinstalled drivers (used driver cleaner first), no good

    - updated mobo BIOS, no good

    - checked voltages, bought a new PSU, no good

    - its not overheating and crashes are fairly random but consistent (as in, mass effect would crash anywhere between 5 and 15 minutes). No pattern for the crashes was found.

finally, what I did is installed a fresh windows on another partition and installed the game there. BOOM, it was working like a charm, 90% of the time. It would still crash, but nowhere near as often as before. After that I sold my 8800GTX and bought a 280 one. I experienced the SAME problem. My main windows would keep crashing and my secondary windows would not crash that often. So, its the windows and/or DirectX.

Now, if you wish to reinstall windows, you would probably have to do a clean install. Which can be painful - i had tons of stuff installed - had to reinstall it all. You might wanna "reinstall" DirectX first, if you can manage to do it. DirectX has no reinstall ability, so you have to use some tricks to do it. I did it by manipulating registry telling windows I had no DirectX, and then reinstalling it from a pre-downloaded copy (redist, not websetup one). I dont know why but there was a difference between those 2 installs, the one that downloads files from INET kept bypassing my faulty DX file and would not reinstall DirectX.

    So, my advice would be:

    - try to reinstall latest drivers but only after you run Driver cleaner to remove "junk" drivers

    - try to update your BIOS and MOBO drivers

    - check your voltages and overheating (highly doubtfull but you never know)

    - reinstall DirectX

and at last, if nothing worked above

    - install a clean version of  Windows on a different particion, run through all windows updates, install your game and NOTHING ELSE. Then see if the problem persist. You may keep this windows for debugging purposes in the future.

I hope this info helps. Good luck.

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

I have a GeForce 8800 GTS 320 board that ran well in beta.My driver version is 181.22. I usually got 60-80 fps at 1280x1024 res. in full screen mode.

Thanks a lot for your help Jimmyman. So far I've updated the bios, uinstalled reinstalled video drivers, reinstalled windows, working on tweaking the video settings. The game still crashes just the same. For some reason after updating the bios the game worked for like 4 hours but then it crashed and now it crashes repeatedly again.

I'm at a loss of what to do now.  :(

Given the low amount  of hardware testing for this game it doesn't surprise me that we don't see more posts like this. That was almost a praise for AV then.. scary !

That said .. I have had lots of problems with various newer drivers from Nvidia and my 8800. Some of the 180.X drivers are total regression with Battlefield 2142 and Fallout 3. Maybe try on the the earlier 170.X drivers and see if that works with Darkfall ?

It would be useful if you post on the DF forums maybe and see what other 8800 GTX users are using terms of driver versions and what the manufactorer is (e.g. XFX, BFG etc;)

Sorry to ask but have your checked temperatures / voltages and does any other modern game work without BSOD'ing ?

can you reduce gpu/mem speeds  and test  again  (underclock basicly but sometimes works )

  • mysterioussmysteriouss Member Posts: 8

What I've done so far is uninstall/reinstall vid drivers, updated to latest nvidia drivers, updated bios and motherboard driver, tweaked the nvidia graphics settings for hours, installed an old driver 178.24. Rivatuner says my water cooled graphics card temp is idling at 68C. Prime95 shows all tests passing for over an hour.

Once in awhile I get this error in the event viewer:

The driver nv4_disp for the display device DeviceVideo0 got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates.

I haven't yet figured out how to underclock the video card using rivatuner but I'll keep at it.

Its funny how people who hate Darkfall spend so much time talking about Darkfall.

www.guru3d.com/newsitem.php  create a profile ,  decrease core/mem speeds and test (second link for shader if you want to decrease ) .Sometimes this helps and sol ve problem but not all time

I use a 8800 GTX 756 mb and I crash after 1-1,5 hour gaming,  tried almost everything.

Kinda sad in a game like this when you lose everything when you die =)

I start to think its not on my end . must be something with the game that cause this.

Thanks and sorry for my english

Have you tried changing your hard disk with one that is not broken? The DF crash has nothing to do with Windows. It is clearly a DF bug.

I RMA'd my video card and hopefully this will fix the issue! I'll let you all know what happened. Thanks for the other suggestions I'll try those if it doesn't work out.
