Just out of curriosity, Why are there so many trolls and people who just hate darkfall? 3/4 of all the forum posts and comments I have seen on forumfall and other places have been "OMG DF SUX!!!!" Nothing constructive or comments as to WHY it "SUX"

Lol, Athelan banned me at the very end of beta for AoC. I thought he was just a mod on the beta forums...
But yeah, I have followed Darkfall from way before 2005. It first came to my attention from a posting on a thread on UO Stratics back around 2001/2002. So he certainly wasnt the one who turned me into a skeptic. Tasos did that all by himself.

There's no reason for the AoC devs to call Darkfall vaporware. Everyone already knows that it's vaporware.

Because I've sat and watched helplessly as the MMO market has gotten worse and worse over the years. Boring uninspired WoW clones pumped out by multi million dollar companies who completely shut out their old fans to try to carve a piece of the WoW pie, and who spend more money on marketing and hyping their game, than they do actually developing it.
My old, beloved MMOs, with all their innovative ideas, are all dropping dead, as the companies that made them move on to create high budget WoW clones and shut out the fans that MADE them those millions. No one tries to make anything different, Mythic was, at one point, doing something fairly cool. They were making an alternate history MMO about the Roman Empire in the space age. Neat idea, but they axed it so they could make the mainstream "hit game" Warhammer Online, and get loads of money from EA for doing so.
Turbine also had a great idea, they were going to make a game called Middle Earth Online. A sandbox focused in living your life in Middle Earth during the time of the War of the Ring. There would be a corruption system based on the moral choices of your character, to get items from elves you'd have to use a bartering system, the world would be fully open to explore, and your class would change depending on the actions you took in game. I visited the Turbine offices a few times and got to alpha test this amazing game. Just 9 months from release, Turbine went into total radio silence, many began to think the game was cancelled, then, out of nowhere, Turbine pops up saying "Good news, we just won a legal battle with Tolkien Enterprises allowing us to change the name to Lord of the Rings Online, scrap every system we had, and make it a WoW clone! ENJOY!" The NGE that no one ever heard of. LotRO had a very stable release, probably the best in MMO history, and its a solid game, but sadly, its hardly any different at all from WoW.
Every MMO I looked forward to crashed and burned while the old MMOs faded away, and finally, along comes Aventurine. They are not trying to shove their game in my face, in fact they have no ad campaign at all. They claim their target audience is the niche market of veteran MMO players, well hey, this is just what I've been waiting for. Small company, indie, 30 man team in Greece, worked hard to push new ideas into the MMO market that have never been attempted before, and sticking to their guns, not allowing any publishers to change their game, not budging on the FFA full loot PvP, because they are making the game THEY want to play, not trying to grab a piece of the WoW pie. FINALLY a company that gets it.
Biggest reason I "blindly" support the game? Because I played it for a month, I've seen what the devs can do, and it is everything I hoped it could be. Once the launch issues are straightened out, this'll be a good one.

This happens during every major launch of an MMO. Just go back to the Vanguard, WAR, AOC...etc forums during their respective launches and see the trollfest that was taking place. Nerds everywhere feel the need to tell us how 'they told us so'. The republican in them also tries to 'protect us from doing serious mistakes'.

. Mounts are screwed over, they have not fixed them and I have heard no news of any attempts to make them faster like they should be
. People have been having login problems since Build 112 - 113 and Aventurine haven't even bothered to address those issues yet

. Stupid amounts of grinding that do not make the game fun I do not want to WORK in a game that I am paying for monthly
. Crafting is useless, they stubbornly still stick to the pointless gold sink even now when crafting is supposed to MAKE money not take it away
. Magic is utterly stupid, I know they've been half-assedly attempting to balance it but the grind is so big that they clearly can't and so even at the highest tiers of magic they are having too much trouble balancing it out
. Directional combat is even more stupid than the magic, the good thing about magic was that the core mechanics at least worked, but with the directional combat melee everyone is getting out two handed weapons because they do the most damage, blocking is useless because of the stamina loss and it hardly takes away any damage, distancing is not in properly and niether is weapon speed which is why a bunch of players are now using just two handed weapons unless things have changed since I got banned
. Archery is the only ONE good thing I have to say about the game, if crafting wasn't so sucky we could get tons of arrows, they actually have gravity and they don't dissapear when they are fired into the air so that could have made for some interesting tactics if they didn't screw the rest of it up
. Because they have made this game gear based and completely ignored everything else combat wise and not fixed the directional combat, this game is so hideously imbalanced that even Fallout 3 and Oblivion put it to shame
I'm no troll, I have just given the facts, Aventurine as a whole have remain stubbornly arrogant about these issues and refused to address them, now they are paying for it so I will hold no sympathy or give no support to a company that doesn't listen to its real player base. We gave them solutions, some of them extremely well thought out and would do the game well extremely long term, but instead they listened to the 9 or 10 idiots repeatedly trolling any thread that spoke negatively about the game.
Thats what pisses me off about all of this, instead of listening to the thousands of members who were actually playing the game they only listened to the whiners and I LITERALLY counted each one and there were only 9 or 10 spamming away and trying to get their own little elitist pedestal so they could remain on the top forever.

Because they have made this game gear based and completely ignored everything else combat wise and not fixed the directional combat, this game is so hideously imbalanced that even Fallout 3 and Oblivion put it to shame I'm no troll, I have just given the facts, Aventurine as a whole have remain stubbornly arrogant about these issues and refused to address them, now they are paying for it so I will hold no sympathy or give no support to a company that doesn't listen to its real player base. We gave them solutions, some of them extremely well thought out and would do the game well extremely long term, but instead they listened to the 9 or 10 idiots repeatedly trolling any thread that spoke negatively about the game. Thats what pisses me off about all of this, instead of listening to the thousands of members who were actually playing the game they only listened to the whiners and I LITERALLY counted each one and there were only 9 or 10 spamming away and trying to get their own little elitist pedestal so they could remain on the top forever. I'm not sure potion spamming was fixed, like I said I go banned, I was Lethn on forumfall by the way, but again I want to point out that games are supposed to be FUN I will never EVER play a game anymore if they expect me to work for some crappy mini-game at the end which you can get at a store for 20 pounds and play right off the bat without any catches.
And any grinding for me is too much, the only kind of grind I accept nowadays is with something like Fallout 3 where it's purely against NPCs because the moment you have that sort of thing against players then the game instantly becomes imbalanced and you will never be able to balance it because the gap is far too big and stupid pre-determined statistics will artificially protect the players with higher stats than you instead of their own human skill.

Because I've sat and watched helplessly as the MMO market has gotten worse and worse over the years. Boring uninspired WoW clones pumped out by multi million dollar companies who completely shut out their old fans to try to carve a piece of the WoW pie, and who spend more money on marketing and hyping their game, than they do actually developing it.
My old, beloved MMOs, with all their innovative ideas, are all dropping dead, as the companies that made them move on to create high budget WoW clones and shut out the fans that MADE them those millions. No one tries to make anything different, Mythic was, at one point, doing something fairly cool. They were making an alternate history MMO about the Roman Empire in the space age. Neat idea, but they axed it so they could make the mainstream "hit game" Warhammer Online, and get loads of money from EA for doing so.
Turbine also had a great idea, they were going to make a game called Middle Earth Online. A sandbox focused in living your life in Middle Earth during the time of the War of the Ring. There would be a corruption system based on the moral choices of your character, to get items from elves you'd have to use a bartering system, the world would be fully open to explore, and your class would change depending on the actions you took in game. I visited the Turbine offices a few times and got to alpha test this amazing game. Just 9 months from release, Turbine went into total radio silence, many began to think the game was cancelled, then, out of nowhere, Turbine pops up saying "Good news, we just won a legal battle with Tolkien Enterprises allowing us to change the name to Lord of the Rings Online, scrap every system we had, and make it a WoW clone! ENJOY!" The NGE that no one ever heard of. LotRO had a very stable release, probably the best in MMO history, and its a solid game, but sadly, its hardly any different at all from WoW.
Every MMO I looked forward to crashed and burned while the old MMOs faded away, and finally, along comes Aventurine. They are not trying to shove their game in my face, in fact they have no ad campaign at all. They claim their target audience is the niche market of veteran MMO players, well hey, this is just what I've been waiting for. Small company, indie, 30 man team in Greece, worked hard to push new ideas into the MMO market that have never been attempted before, and sticking to their guns, not allowing any publishers to change their game, not budging on the FFA full loot PvP, because they are making the game THEY want to play, not trying to grab a piece of the WoW pie. FINALLY a company that gets it.
Biggest reason I "blindly" support the game? Because I played it for a month, I've seen what the devs can do, and it is everything I hoped it could be. Once the launch issues are straightened out, this'll be a good one.

Did you ever stop and think that if you don't like grinding the you should probably avoid sandbox games like the plague? There was a discussion about it on the Darkfall forum as well, but it's inaccessible due to all the turmoil going on over there right now.

There would be a corruption system based on the moral choices of your character, to get items from elves you'd have to use a bartering system, the world would be fully open to explore, and your class would change depending on the actions you took in game. I visited the Turbine offices a few times and got to alpha test this amazing game. Just 9 months from release, Turbine went into total radio silence, many began to think the game was cancelled, then, out of nowhere, Turbine pops up saying "Good news, we just won a legal battle with Tolkien Enterprises allowing us to change the name to Lord of the Rings Online, scrap every system we had, and make it a WoW clone! ENJOY!" The NGE that no one ever heard of. LotRO had a very stable release, probably the best in MMO history, and its a solid game, but sadly, its hardly any different at all from WoW.
Every MMO I looked forward to crashed and burned while the old MMOs faded away, and finally, along comes Aventurine. They are not trying to shove their game in my face, in fact they have no ad campaign at all. They claim their target audience is the niche market of veteran MMO players, well hey, this is just what I've been waiting for. Small company, indie, 30 man team in Greece, worked hard to push new ideas into the MMO market that have never been attempted before, and sticking to their guns, not allowing any publishers to change their game, not budging on the FFA full loot PvP, because they are making the game THEY want to play, not trying to grab a piece of the WoW pie. FINALLY a company that gets it.
Biggest reason I "blindly" support the game? Because I played it for a month, I've seen what the devs can do, and it is everything I hoped it could be. Once the launch issues are straightened out, this'll be a good one.

This happens during every major launch of an MMO. Just go back to the Vanguard, WAR, AOC...etc forums during their respective launches and see the trollfest that was taking place. Boring uninspired WoW clones pumped out by multi million dollar companies who completely shut out their old fans to try to carve a piece of the WoW pie, and who spend more money on marketing and hyping their game, than they do actually developing it.
My old, beloved MMOs, with all their innovative ideas, are all dropping dead, as the companies that made them move on to create high budget WoW clones and shut out the fans that MADE them those millions. No one tries to make anything different, Mythic was, at one point, doing something fairly cool. They were making an alternate history MMO about the Roman Empire in the space age. Neat idea, but they axed it so they could make the mainstream "hit game" Warhammer Online, and get loads of money from EA for doing so.

. Mounts are screwed over, they have not fixed them and I have heard no news of any attempts to make them faster like they should be
. People have been having login problems since Build 112 - 113 and Aventurine haven't even bothered to address those issues yet

. Stupid amounts of grinding that do not make the game fun I do not want to WORK in a game that I am paying for monthly
. Crafting is useless, they stubbornly still stick to the pointless gold sink even now when crafting is supposed to MAKE money not take it away
. Magic is utterly stupid, I know they've been half-assedly attempting to balance it but the grind is so big that they clearly can't and so even at the highest tiers of magic they are having too much trouble balancing it out
. Directional combat is even more stupid than the magic, the good thing about magic was that the core mechanics at least worked, but with the directional combat melee everyone is getting out two handed weapons because they do the most damage, blocking is useless because of the stamina loss and it hardly takes away any damage, distancing is not in properly and niether is weapon speed which is why a bunch of players are now using just two handed weapons unless things have changed since I got banned
. Archery is the only ONE good thing I have to say about the game, if crafting wasn't so sucky we could get tons of arrows, they actually have gravity and they don't dissapear when they are fired into the air so that could have made for some interesting tactics if they didn't screw the rest of it up
. Because they have made this game gear based and completely ignored everything else combat wise and not fixed the directional combat, this game is so hideously imbalanced that even Fallout 3 and Oblivion put it to shame
I'm no troll, I have just given the facts, Aventurine as a whole have remain stubbornly arrogant about these issues and refused to address them, now they are paying for it so I will hold no sympathy or give no support to a company that doesn't listen to its real player base. We gave them solutions, some of them extremely well thought out and would do the game well extremely long term, but instead they listened to the 9 or 10 idiots repeatedly trolling any thread that spoke negatively about the game.
Thats what pisses me off about all of this, instead of listening to the thousands of members who were actually playing the game they only listened to the whiners and I LITERALLY counted each one and there were only 9 or 10 spamming away and trying to get their own little elitist pedestal so they could remain on the top forever.

And honestly, the magic grind isn't that much, it's just abit expensive. (if you compare it to any MMO)

I'm not sure potion spamming was fixed, like I said I go banned, I was Lethn on forumfall by the way, but again I want to point out that games are supposed to be FUN I will never EVER play a game anymore if they expect me to work for some crappy mini-game at the end which you can get at a store for 20 pounds and play right off the bat without any catches.
And any grinding for me is too much, the only kind of grind I accept nowadays is with something like Fallout 3 where it's purely against NPCs because the moment you have that sort of thing against players then the game instantly becomes imbalanced and you will never be able to balance it because the gap is far too big and stupid pre-determined statistics will artificially protect the players with higher stats than you instead of their own human skill.
Games like Age of Chivalry and Mirror's Edge ( I know its an EA game but if you play it you'll understand, you don't necessarily have to buy it of course, I hate them too ) are what I expect out of 'next-generation' games nowadays, if all a game offers is grinding or half-assed game mechanics and nothing but flashy graphics then I will not play it, pure and simple.
I wish that some indie developer would make a mirror's edge spin off into an MMO by the way, I would play that game in an instant because the amount of freedom in that game even when you wondered off the linear mission path was amazing, EVERYTHING you ran across or jumped towards or climbed up reacted exactly as you'd expect it to in real life.

Awesome post mate. Couldn't have said it better myself. The people that really love MMO's cannot help but support every little company that tries to do something different and original. They may succeed or fail but at least they stick to an idea for how they want the game to be, not looking to increase subscriptions but to make a game THEY would love play.

From your two post it seems to me that you don't really have a grudge about the quality of the game per se.What you have a problem with is the direction the game has. If you don't like to 'work' or 'grind' to get a skill or a reward, then there many games out there that provide instant gratification. Unless Aventurine claimed at some point that they will make such a game and they didn't deliver , I don't think they have. LOTRO...hell for that matter, AC1. Turbine's first game had a pretty smooth launch 10 years ago.
DAoC was smooth, I hear. Wasn't there for that one.
