Scrolling Skill Deck - whats the consensus?

Just interested in what some active players think of the scrolling combat skill deck dohickey.

On the face of it, I like the sound of it. One of my biggest grumbles is when MMOs have you keybinding the entire keyboard just so you can fight competently. This seems like a pretty smart way to allow for a large array of base skills, a large number of combinations or decks, and yet not overload the player's keyboard. Similar to how GWs limited skill selection.

So do players like it? does it add value and strategy? or do you think its flawed? and why?

As a not so active player but heavy beta tester, I can say this is one of the best combat ideas I've faced.

It's not as cool as AoC's swing direction thingy or comparable to a pure FPS but definately something NEW. I never made it past level 16 myself but even at that point you really have to start thinking which skills you put in and where to.

The combat always starts from the first tier so you'd be best off putting in some ranged "pull" skill, on the other hand if you're being ambushed maybe you should have a physique lowering skill to offset the enemy and gain the advantage. The placing of combo skills should be given some thought too, so you won't blow it if there was some better skill to be used instead of the finisher.

The other strategical point is the fact that, at least on the lower levels, you won't be able to have all the skills your class has. Having played all the classes, I know you can play them in various different styles. And it all depends on which skills you choose at levelups. Of course which skills you choose should also affect or be affected by the attributes you raise. Some skills use different attr. to define the damage or heal output.

There is the choice of saving different skill decks, maybe to cater group play better in one, solo in the other and pvp in the last.

If you have the time, I'm sure you won't be disappointed testing the game. If nothing else, it gives you a fresh view of how combat could work.

I love the skill deck :)

I for one hate hotkey spamming, this sytem makes you choose which skills you want to use you no longer have all your skills available all the time, you now have only a max of 6 at any given time and that makes creating your skilldeck  a real challenge.

I just love how this game emphasises on players developing skills (building your skilldeck being one of them) and not on aqquiring gear (which in this game is just for looks).

It is an amazing idea imo. Alot of the skills on different tiers can compliment eachother so you can sort of create chains and such. You really have to think about how you set up your deck.

You have to decide if you want to maximise your damage or be prepared incase you get "debuffed". What you use with a group is probably going to be different than solo etc.

Adds alot to the game, and you can tell they spent alot of time polishing this part of it.

I think it is a great idea. It is why I have been excited about TCoS...and why I am upset at how the devs decided to "release" the game.

I keep feeling TCoS is DOA because of terrible publishing choices.

Get that hype meter up here on mmorpg.com

The game having no initial cost should attract a good few folks that will get hooked.

It is a great depth and stratergy adding feature that at the moment no other MMo has. It takes thought planning and knowledge of class and type of character you like to play to be successful.  It is not cookie cutter and stand and click type of game play. If you play it like a regular MMo you probably won't like it because you will have trouble being successful. Leave preconceptions behind when you start and the likelihood is you will enjoy it.  But you will have to like being thoughtful and interactive. Another level of stratergy is the attributes and states system which again adds another layer of stratergy. To me it just gets better and better, but give it a try FOR FREE and see for yourself.

It cost nothing to download and nothing to play for hours of leveling.

IMO the spinny thing itself is cool but not great. There are three other aspects related to it that I think are just as important.

    1. Mouse look mode like a FPS. This lets you remain more active and mobile in combat without having to click just to turn.
    2. Scroll wheel ability selection. I don't have to click the num keys anymore!
    3. A combat system that includes mobility as a required tactic. Only a few MMOG's have done this and I love them all.

The swinging system in AoC was too fiddly. I didn't really enjoy playing 'Simon Says' during combat. There was also no required mobility in their combat system as well.

Hmm, well it sounds like the design of their combat system in general, including the Skill Deck and the mouse targetting FPS lite style is working really well. I'll certainly delve into the details of this game some more, I cant play yet since I'm not in Europe. It sounds promising.

I've been playing the benelaux version for quite some time now and gotten probably 6 level 5~7's and so far I find the skill deck thing to be *pretty* good, but when you combine it with the aiming system (TPS-like) it is really awesome because you actually have to aim at the other players..you can't just click them to target and move where ever just spamming skills there is a lot more to it.

The skills themselves are very unique with the physique/morale/concentration stats that constantly change in the heat of the battle...many of the skills affect these stats and many of the other skills do more damage or put on a certain debuff/poison/etc. once you use the other debuff so they go together in a combo-like sequence...I haven't been able to level up past 7 so I cannot comment on how it works later on once you get actual combo starters and finishers but from what I've played it is already very fun and fast paced..you have to think on your feet a lot.

On that note it is also very fun to set up a skill deck so you can use it strategically, just make sure you play till at least level 10~15 once acclaim's version comes out (or whatever the max level is going to be on it) before you judge it because a lot of people pick it up and quit during the tutorial then come here to complain about out the skill deck sucks...because you cannot gain the full potential of it until later on.

Thats why this game should deserve a bigger following of players becouse combat is great and its not a gear based game but skill based still nice how you get new gear for looks.
