Smoothest launch? YEAH RIGHT!

JohnarkJohnark Member Posts: 901

Well what do you know... 2nd day since launch and SOE decides to shut down certain servers every 30-60 minutes.  Now the entire game is offline, for how much time?  Who knows?

You can't even access the official EQ2 Forums.  Thrust me, I remember the same thing whenever SOE released a buggy update for Star Wars Galaxies.  Instead of putting up warnings why the game is down either when you log into the game, forum or webpage... they shut down everything.

No access to forums.  No access to the chat.  All customer support chat offline.  Emails you never know when they will respond if they even will.

That's SOE for you.  They take a game that was working perfectly and screw it up by adding more things without testing it first.  I mean the reason why I wanted EQ2 so bad was because the beta 1 week before release was flawless.  No lag, quests were great and bugless and I loved the gameplay.

Today... all night SOE has been shutting down the Mistmoore server.  And apperantly more servers went down every once in awhile due to overpopulation.

And just now... you cannot even log into the Login Server.

The moment I came on the mmorpg.com EQ2 forum... the first thread was "Smoothest Lauch for a MMORPG" ... I just laughed, then posted this thread.

Right about now the senior managers are scratching their heads going, "Who said we shouldn't have an open beta as a stress test?"

It's the **2ND** day for crying out loud!  2nd day!!!   3rd day for Americans, but 2nd day for Canadians!

What did SOE have to do to mess things up now?  I mean the game was good the way it is.  Sure, minor bugs in quests, but does it have to go to the point to forcing SOE to shut down the entire game?

Well, heres the true reason server went down, SoE employes have a real issue with stepping OVER the server's power cord, so, they are all running around drinking there coffee, and low and behold, one snags the power cord, and kaput servers down for 2 hours :P

Well at least I now know its not just me.

I mean I spent 14 hrs at school today, all I had to look forward to was EQ2...

I'll be happy if its up soon.

I was able to get into the login screen though. Then the network shutdown again...

Oh well. I have a huge test tomorrow anyway, so a couple more hours of sleep will do me good. If the thing comes back up in the next 15 minutes (11pm CST) then I'll still play for an hour.

They didn't "shut down" the game.  It crashed.  Normally when they are doing a controlled shutdown, you would see an in game broadcast and that did no happen.

:( doesn't look like i'll get any more eq2 tonight unless the server comes up now

expect it to only get worse

This latest shutdown appears far worse than a simple server crash.  Along with the network connection problems, it appears there is also a problem with the registration database.  This would indicate a problem with all servers, forums, etc.  The servers were running fine on the 9th, then a little worse on the 10th.  I have also noticed that zoning into zones previously cached in memory is taking significantly longer today.  This could imply some memory leaks are present.  Memory leaks on the client side are a nuissance, but server-side memory leaks are disasterous.  The lack of communication between SOE and the public is going to prove disasterous this close to release.  I hope this serves as a lesson to future mmorpgs.  The worst thing a company can do when all hell breaks lose is cut off contact with the public.

Yeah, it crashed. Big deal. The game is very fun and engaging; we should expect a few issues considering so far it really hasn't been too bad.

  • SraelonSraelon Member Posts: 36

and look at how fast the servers were filling up with people flooding in. 6 new servers had to be opened. Seems like they had 'em ready and waiting too which means they were prepared for the onslaught.

That's why this downtime seems like something totally unexpected happened, like maybe their provider is having problems rather than the Sony servers.

Who knows. All I know is I wanna log in, dammit.

You guys have an amazing behavior, this is a wonderful game, be greatful that you get the chance to play it...

If the trouble persists on certain servers then switch, I'm considering leaving the Antonia Bayle server for that other Lucan D'lere server..It's seems it's rather over crowded..

It's a common problem, some people are too lazy to read but not too lazy to whine.

I read the official forum after it came back up. When the login was down so was the forums. So there was no way for anyone to know that they were down on purpose until later.

Now, if they had the information up earlier in the day it would be understandable how alot of people would miss it. I myself was either at work, in class, or studying for an extremely hard test at any given point yesterday. EQ2 isn't the center of my universe so I don't check for information every 5 minutes.

    **

it looks like they're updating again. I don't mind these that much since I won't be able to fully play until friday afternoon because of stupid college work.

I'm glad to hear some amount of rationality here; hearing nothing but negativity or negative slanted comments makes one's life just as drab and disappointing. Remember, you are what you think. Be calm, find your Zen moment. image

The facts are it's not going to be perfect. There are hundreds of thousands of people joining EQ2 just as we all knew would happen. I've been inconvenienced and disappointed but it's not the end of the world and the uptime more than makes up for the limited downtime. image

Yeah take a look at Galaxies for example. That game has been out for a while now and it still is patching every other week.

This is never an issue with me, cause all it's doing is making the game better. And for the $90 US I paid for the game, I want it to be the best game possible.

I have yet to see anything wrong (with the exception of the shark that chased me onto the land)

You guys should really read the DEV tracker before getting all upset that the servers crashed.

It was stated by the head DEV that a power outage in their area caused the server outage and some other problems.

Also, this game has been the smoothest launch in mmorpg history. Ive been playing for the last 3 days and the only time I experienced down time was last night. That's pretty good if you ask me.

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

Was anyone around for  eq launch? It was buggy and started slowed and was patched like 2 times a day for the first week. It happens. This is a brand new game. It has to have some of the kinks worked out. I mean do any of you guys that are moaning and groaning ever done any programing or serious networking. Even with a team of people problems occur. Thats life.

I mean geez give the soe team a break. THey have probably been working mass overtime right now to make sure that your experience is top notch. Suck it up for a few hours while they make your gaming experience better.

Actually yes. I'm a computer science major at my college. So I completly understand that there will always be issues needed to be fixed. I'm just happy they're doing it when normal people are asleep. Me, I'm not normal. I get up at 5am CST to get ready for school and work (I work at the college I attend).

No I wasn't around when EQ launched, I've only recently (with the last year) started playing MMORPG's. Before that I played some MUD's.

This is the 3rd MMORPG I've bought and yeah it did have the smoothest launch of the three. Lineage 2 had to have the worst, since it was crashing on me every 30 minutes.I didn't get galaxies until the week after it was released so I wasn't there for the "launch" of the game.

Actually these downtimes benefit the hardcore gamers. Cause you know they need to logout and sleep occasionally.

This is a crazy attitude, and one that allows for the problems that currently exist with just about every MMO release, especially those created by SOE. I admit that software will always have some unexpected glitches that catch you off guard, but to release something that has obvious problems is just lazy programming and caring little for the actual project.

It might be a new game, but so was Doom 3 and I played through the whole of that without seeing a single problem. I never saw a single problem in City of Heroes while I was playing that. With the exception of the crappy pathing inside city areas, I never saw a problem with Rome - Total War either. So either they were lucky, or they care more for the piece of software they're creating.

Thats SOE's problem, I think, they see the $$$ first and the project second, so when they think everything is stable enough to release.. they release it.. then spend the next 6 months fixing it, while also trying to get more $$$ from creating expansions.. which spreads the programmers thin, so the 6 months of fixing turns to 12 months, but the expansion also has a load of bugs so they spend even more time fixing that too, while trying to create another expansion.. And thats why you sometimes see a bug thats been in since release never being fixed.

Its very poor. Imagine if you went to a shop and bought a meat pie which had bugs crawling around in it. Would you be happy and say, "Aww, its a new pie, we'll let them off, they'll sort it out soon..", and then come online and say, "Have any of you tried making pies? Suck it up.". Hell no, you'd complain and take it back and demand a refund.
