A Few AoC Questions....

OKAY SO. Let me start off by saying AoC rules.

Second, i need to know a few things:

1.) I bought the game a few days after release, and the lag was 110% UNBEARABLE, on my best computer, at that! That computer can run WoW and Lord of the RIngs Online on very high settings, with many of the options labelled as "THIS MAY LAG YOU" up to max. And yet still, the computer repetadly froze and lagged.

Was this because of the computer? Or because it was a few days after release and the massive amount of people were lagging it?

Im attempting to buy a new computer, here are the specs:

CASE: ($25 off Mail-in Rebate) New! Apevia X-Jupiter Full Tower Gaming Server w/ Temp Display and Fan Control 420 Watt Power (G Type Black Color with Side-Window)

POWER SUPPLY Upgrade: 680 Watts Power Supplies (Hush Power Supply SLI/CrossFire Ready)

CPU: (Quad-Core)Intel® Core™ 2 Extreme QX9650 @ 3.00GHz 1333FSB 12MB L2 Cache 64-bit

COOLING FAN : Thermaltake V1 Gaming CPU Cooling Fan (Excellent Overclocking + Silent Proof + Smart CPU & System Thermal Monitor)

MEMORY: 2GB (1GBx2) PC1333 DDR3 PC3 10666 Dual Channel Memory (Corsair or Major Brand)

VIDEO CARD: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB 16X PCI Express (Major Brand Powered by NVIDIA)

MULTIPLE VIDEO CARD SETTINGS: Xtreme Performance in SLI/CrossFireX Gaming Mode Supports Single Monitor

LCD Monitor: 22& quot; TFT Active Matrix LCD Display (Generic 22inch WSXGA TFT LCD Display)

2nd Monitor: 22& quot; TFT Active Matrix LCD Display (Generic 22inch WSXGA TFT LCD Display)

HARD DRIVE: Extreme Performance (RAID-0) with 2 Identical Hard Drives (300GB (150GBx2) Gaming Western Digital VelociRaptor 10, 000RPM SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache WD1500HLFS)

Data Hard Drive: 1TB (1TBx1) SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM Hard Drive

Data Hard Drive: 1TB (1TBx1) SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM Hard Drive

Optical Drive: LG GGC-H20L BLU-RAY/HD-DVD Reader / DVD±R/±RW Writer (Black Color)

Optical Drive 2: (Special Price) LG 20X DVD±R/±RW + CD-R/RW DRIVE DUAL LAYER (BLACK COLOR)

OS: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium w/ Service Pack 1 (64-bit Edition)

Cost ends up to approximately $3100.

I want this PC to be able to run AoC on like, massively high settings and not lag

U are doin' all this for AoC? Well i think it should be enough. I'm able to play it at high settings with 35-38fps using:

    <OperatingSystem>Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3

    <Processor>Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20GHz (2 CPUs)

    <Memory>2048MB RAM

    <CardName>ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series

    <Manufacturer>ATI Technologies Inc.

    <ChipType>ATI Radeon Graphics Processor

    <DisplayMemory>256.0 MB

    <CurrentMode>1440 x 900 (32 bit) (60Hz)

Get a lower spec CPU as the one you are currently looking at is stupidly expensive and is not worth the extra cash. Also, not sure why you need the second Optical Drive.

Use the money saved from the CPU to get another 2Gb of RAM and probably 24" screens. When chosing your screens be sure to check what kind of panel they have. Depends on what your looking for in a screen but my opinion is that TN panels should be avoided.

It could be a bit of both and quite possibly your internet speed which is more key to gameplay than to either PC or game engine. It is online after all and very dependant on if you have DSL or ADSL / wireless and so on.
2.) I would like a game pass ,if anyone actually has one they could send to me just PM me with the code.

Well it looks like you have 2 monitors there and 2gb ram.

Personally I would ditch the over priced CPU for a less model, get 4gb Ram, ditch the second monitor and upgrade to a 24" one. Use the saving to upgrade your GPU to something better.

As it is you wont have any hiccups if you went with one monitor. Dual display on that card will slow you down.

Nice rig, think you need a better GFX card if you wana go max settings..

  • SevenwindSevenwind Member UncommonPosts: 2,188

I would bump the system memory to 4gb. Be ready for Windows 7 if you don't plan on putting Vista on it now. If you do put Vista on it now, install Vista x64 and that way you can enjoy DX10 games and AoC when it eventually releases its dx10 version.

If you had an account in the past with Funcom for AoC use one of your buddy passes and send it to an alternate email address. This way you can test  the game to see if it will run on your bran new computer.

    750 bucks cheaper......

  • gantonganton Member UncommonPosts: 304

I would skip the quad all together, its not really needed at all right now AOC wont take advantage of it and you can get a beast of a C2D for much much cheaper that will run AOC with ease. C2D's also overclock like a beast. Take your savings and get a better GFX card and 4gb of ram. You should be able to put together quite a nice pc for under a grand that will play AOC max(or any game for that matter) in HD, just have to be smart about what your getting.

If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

I would say the GTX260,though I will add I run the game on high with only very light tweaking and the game runs great on my system which is,dual core 2.66,vista 32,4gb ram,8800gt 512mb card.

I dont know why someone posted your 9800 card wouldnt be enough to run this game in all its glory as i think you would fly with it.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX280 would be a better choice over the 260, but the original card would be more than enough for this game.. but if your going to buy a new machine you may as well get the best! The CPU is certainly the right way to go along with the extra 2Gb of RAM.

I do agree that a quad may not be the best choice, but that depends on what you plan on doing with your computer other than gaming. For now not many games can utilise all 4 cores, but some can and in the future this will probably become more the norm. No doubt in the form of putting physics calculations onto one of the CPU cores.

Now, to finalize this, is there a point in getting a hard drive AND a data hard drive?

and also is there a point in two video cards?

  • [sYn][sYn] Member UncommonPosts: 61

Dont bother with 2 graphics cards, the extra performance gain is marginal and doesnt make up for the extra cost and hassle. It was a good idea that has yet to be done well.

As for the hard drives, that is up to you really. Many people think that having 2 super fast drives RAIDED will increase game performance, they then have a seperate drive to store other data. Personally I feel that the performance is again very marginal and is something that should be left for application servers.. Still, thats my opinion.

  • [sYn][sYn] Member UncommonPosts: 61

Just to hit on the opictal drives again, the Blue-Ray drive should be able to play DVD's also, so unless you really want 2 drives for a reason, you shouldn't need them. Get a Blue-Ray / DVD Writer drive instead.

  • spikes7757spikes7757 Member Posts: 16

    okay so I should go LG GGC-H20L BLU-RAY/HD-DVD Reader / DVD±R/±RW Writer

    with no second optical drive?

  • [sYn][sYn] Member UncommonPosts: 61

I think that would be a better option yes.

  • [sYn][sYn] Member UncommonPosts: 61

    NO NO NO NO!

The killer card is trash and total waste of money. Do not buy it. Utter marketing gabage! Find a cheap 1000Mbps network card, just a cheapo netgear one will be just as good as the killer but will be 140$ cheaper ;)!

Sorry I haven't read the whole thread. If you want to reduce lag, finding a fast internet connection that is unlimited and not restricted by any fair usage policy may be the most effective way. My computer is average, but I hardly ever lag in aoc even at times when other ppl are complaining about it because I have a beast IC! Also having two monitors is a good idea as aoc windowed mode is very good! but you could get a couple of old-school ones on ebay for pretty much free!
