I have played Darkfall for two months now. Been wating for a few years. And i was prepared for another failure the first time i logged in.
But DF as a game is not a failure. Its stable and fun.
And thats also why im beginning to get tired of all non playing people desperatly trying to find anything wrong with the game. DF is far from perfect, when ever a friend ask me if they should buy it, i just tell them if they like FFAPvP and sandbox gameplay...they should. Otherwise they shoudent touch it.
And as i have written before, DF is so fifferent from all other MMOs out there right now. Tat you seriously need to try it to understand. It is impossible to enforce the same state of mind as in WoW, WAR, LOTRO, AoC, EQ2 or whatever.
Lets take the animation issue for example. When we look at videos, we all think they look horrible (animations not videos). But when we are ingame it looks natural. Same with the UI for example. Or the controls.
So if you havent tryed it, or have no interest in ever trying it...please dont try and form a weird opinion about DF. It only looks strange to the people playing the game. I know right now they are behind what they should have done, and are woring hard to solve so we all can buy the game.
Of course you can keep on posting those "scam/failure/hate posts. Its a free world.....

A game like Darkfall scares some people. I know it sounds silly but it is true.

That part about people getting scared is very true. I know many WAR/WoW players and they really "show thier teeth" when i talk about sandbox gameplay. They get in a real defensive mode.
And they close thier eyes and ears and wont listen to anything that could rock thier perfect world.
notice these posts are all on mmorpg
And mmorpg.com did just reach over one millon members too : )
Wonders if DF had anything to do with it? LOL
You have not been here long...have you? EVERYONE has an opinion...whether it is based on the company, the game, mechanics...you name it. And no matter how hard you try, they cannot stop themselves from saying things.
If you see a car drive by that is all nasty rust and what not, you may turn to your friend and say "That car sucks..."...yet, are you really interested in that car? Did you want to buy it?
See how that works?
Same way with the game. We have all formed opinions on how it plays from video, websites or talked to friends...i.e: we saw that car drive by or we know the owner and he had a few choice words...and when I looked at that Darkfall model from 1999 drive by, all I could say was..
"It sucked."
Thats retarded. I don't even mean a little, I mean like "5-year old calling you a sissy because you won't jump off a cliff into jagged rocks" retarded. There is no logic to being scared in the least about a game which only ever appeal to a very small, niche, market...and even THEN will fail to attract all of those as its not the most polished or pretty game ever made. The only thing scared of Darkfall is UO...and even then, I doubt it. UO is so old, it probably forgot how to feel feelings.
The truth here is that you have three major sides in this situation. Die hard fans who wouldn't know good OR bad. Die hard haters who still don't want to accept that this game inexplicably came out, and people who can't fall into either group because they both cannot SEE the game....and are forced to only see a really piss-poor company calling the shots.
I know, I know....this company may have made a good game. They way they are running the business, though, is, and always has been, very poor. Their communication has sucked, their progress has sucked, their ability to deal with normal MMO situations has sucked, and their PR sucks. I don't think anyone is arguing against that, we all accept Aventurine for what they are. They are the greenest of the green, and they have a really good ideal that they made by themselves.
But, to the lonely straggler caught in the middle of this....its hard too say happy things right now. Its even harder to ignore the unhappy things being said. Its also hard to ignore the happy things that ARE being said....but those are being weighed out by a ton of crap. Aventurine needs to pull it together right now, and get this under control quickly. They've been floating on free PR for years now....if they continue to do so now it will cost them, as most of the "free PR" these days is more negative than positive.
And there is no way to know what can be trusted and what can't.
So people are going to play it safe.
Thus:
The sea is thick with hate and anger. There are no efforts being made to still the choppy water, and its causing some boats to overturn. The backlash from that is even more hate and anger...and that flows over into the forums like a plauge because nothing is being done.
You are 100% right Openedge.
But that is also my main point. Why isnt more people interested in finding out how it is? I mean, we are all here for our interest in MMORPGs. Our hobby. Or did i miss something. Do people walk around and pretend to like it, so other will think they are cool! Thats insane.
Opinions are like assholes.
Everyone is butt-raping the OP's.
I don't agree with the people who are saying that the game is a total scam/waste of money, however I do believe that the majority of the more negative reviews are for the most part accurate. The game will most definitely need a 1, 3, and 6 month review to properly do it justice, but the game does have a lot of problems. However, seeing as most MMO's have their issues at launch, I suppose we can accept that this one is no different, because it is in fact an INDIE developer, with a smaller staff and certainly a smaller budget. Therefore, while a lot of these issues might have been caught and corrected by a larger, more stable company, Adventurine 'did what it could' and viola we have a 'finished' prodct that needs some work. Hopefully some things will be changed/fixed. Sure the animations suck, the sounds are gut-wrentching, and the mob exploits could be considered a deal-breaker for some players, in time these things will be fixed (hopefully). My stand on the game since it has come out, seeing as I purchased it myself, is to those who arent 100% dedicated to the idea of the game WAIT FOR A TRIAL so you can play it for free and not get pissed because you spent 50 bucks and hated the game.

you forgot those who are playign the game. enjoy it. don't mind paying for it. yet can still see that the company messed up the launch and that there is still work to be done. they also don't really care about how the company handles its business because that none of there business, as long as they can play the game they payed for, They also realise that videogames ar enot life nor death and can approach them in a relaxed manner.
There are more people who do.
The company is question is just really shitty at LETTING them.
For starters, no free trial. Thats a killer. IN a game this niche....yeah, no one is gonna pay to roll it up. Limited release? Another killer, now only the hardcore fans are in the game. Even if the outside viewer WANTS to really understand and be informed...most of us are at least smart enough to realize there is GOING to be a bias involved here. Bias views aren't good, and its not what we are looking for.
So they have no way to view it openly themselves, and no neutral party to trust about it.
What do you EXPECT?
Why are there so many opinions? The devs have practically been begging for it, haven't they? "Yes, we are making the best game in the known universe. It's feature complete and fully working, but no you can't see it, because we've ordered a new flux capacitor that will make the game even more insanely good than it already is and it may or may not arrive this month."
At least their cheeky style has generated a lot of attention with what looks to be a nonexistent marketing budget, so why are you complaining again?
I have to agree that I think alot of people bash this game because they are intimidated by its features and harsh enviroment.
Some take it to a personal level making me think they must have been traumatized in an earlier game that allowed pk'ing, looting and things of this nature.
I saw this in WoW too. Anytime I voiced an opinion of how I'd like to play a FFA +loot kind of game people came out of the woodwork with their panties in a bunch. I definitely think its intimidating to alot of people.
If you can admit that work needs to be done.
AND admit the messed alot of things up.
But then say you don't care, don't mind losing money on it, and think that how a company handles the way it deal with its customers (SEE ALSO : YOU)
Then you fall DIRECTLY into my "Hardcore Fan" grouping. A neutral (and average) user would not feel the way you do at all. Its teh neutral people we aren't hearing from on the forums. They are the ONLY ones. This thread is about opinions about the game, opinions voiced by people on the forums. I think I broke that down very nicely. I explained to the OP that what he sees here is directly related to how Aventurine has chosen to do its business. I think I am right, and have supported that ideal.
You disagree, and I'm cool with that. But you are most certainly NOT some magical "fourth consideration" I should have made. You are most definitely a Super Fan. That fact doesn't bother me, personally. But, how that stance affects what a neutral party might think about how YOU feel about this game does. You might have good points, and a solid grasp of the game....but thats going to get overlooked because you very obviously can ignore glaring faults. Its the glaring faults we need to know more about. We already know its selling points.

"The monsters are tough. I was looking for a challenge, but these things are just too damn smart." -DF Beta Tester
"If people were dismissing it, then they wouldn't be talking about it. The well-meaning gamers root for efforts that try to raise the bar. So who's left? It's so easy being a skeptic." -Tasos

*Snicker*
Must refrain from laughing...
Fear of video gamWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA*cough! cough! hack!*HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
Whats even funnier is you believe this to be true!
Seriously, thats like saying people are afraid to watch Nightmare on Elm St. Sure its bloodier than watching a comedy, but scared?!
The only thing scary about the game is the fact fans need to come up with nonsense like this to justify their game out of fear of negative opinions...
Ugh... now my ribs hurt....
Whew... scared of a video game... that was a good one...
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
Wouldn't it be funny if this post single handedly stopped internet hate?
/rolleyes

its not just darkfall I feel this way about.
Then I cannot understand how you play these games. With so much time and money invested in, what is essentially, imaginary product...it seems like you would be much more interested in the business as a whole, and its consequent success. By saying you don't care what they do, you read as though your stance can be streamlined into "I don't even care if the servers get wiped, and I lose it all..its just a game"
I really don't think anyone who plays these feel that way. True, its just a game. Its also money invested, and the only way you can see the result of that is to log in. Since your fruit is tied directly into the business, and not into a product, it would stand to reason that a logical fellow would care at least remotely about how the company is proceeding with said investment.

I kind of do feel that way.
Sure I would be super pissed if that happened... but its just a game..
I spend 50$, or 15$ a month on much less entertaining and much less relevant things.
life is short... why would I get upset abotu videogames?
Then you have people like me, who have no interest in playing the game that had really hoped for the game to be a success because I am sick of EQ clones and really need someone with the balls to step up and make something different AND not fail.
Unfortunately with the way Adventurine handled this launch, it is more like being facinated with a train wreck that has been brewing for 8 years... You want to turn away and not watch, but you find you can't... Kinda morbid in a way, but hey, there you have it.

See, I don't do that. If I spend money...its almost always on something I can make great and plentiful use of. Like, new guitars...new PC's....ect. I figure that these MMO teams are making some fat bank on a success, and that most of them will get to live a gamers dream. I have a few expectations that go along with that, though not as many as some I've seen in these parts.
I just know that I care quite a bit about the company behind my games. I've seen far too much money and time shat on in the past to feel otherwise. I don't like how easy it is for game companies to do that to us, or how easy it is for them to up and decide they no longer care. I also care about knowing a little bit about the game before I buy it. When I settle on an MMO, I do so with the intention of staying in that world for years. You know, making friends, having fun, being social.
I don't want to bother dropping one such world for another if its gonna blow, or if the company is.
I will play it when it is released.
