I've been playing MMORPGs since EQ1 got released, but have never really given WoW a real chance. I tried it a couple of years ago, but got annoyed tht it was so easy compared to other MMORPGs of earlier days. Since all MMORPGs now take after WoW I decided to give it another go, and was hoping to enjoy it.
I decided to roll on a RP server, since I thought that would increase my odds of being involved in a more mature player community. At level 1 a player named Randomleader invited me to group, I declined. I noticed that Mfl and Asdl were grouped together. Pushing past the non-RP naming I continued, and most other people had real names. I was starting to enjoy it.
Then I got to "Goldshire". I went into the pub, where there were lots of people "RPing". That is, standing around begging for "cyb0r". I was asked in a whisper, "need a sex slave", to which I replied, "lol?". Moving on even from that, I continued my questing. I entered a mine at level 7, there was a female caster of some description at the entrance with me. She agroed two mobs, one of which I was about to attack. I checked she was okay, and when I realised she was, I entered the mine. A minute later I heard a voice behind me say "u reported". Confused I replied, "What?", and the response I recieved was something along the lines of "reported becuz u r in RP realm u not know how to RP". I replied, "I can speak in proper English..." and she left. I still am not quite sure what I did wrong.
I guess what I want to know is, is this common place? If so, I know for a fact that WoW is not for me. If this was just a freak occurance, and there are good mature guilds, or later game is better, please let me know and I might continue.

Something tells me you havent played an MMO in some time. Never roll on a RP server unless you want to deal with idiots and lamers who just cybor. Go into the Deeprun Tram, Geez, its all sex. And most of the guys are cyboring with guys!
RP servers in any MMO these days, just are magnets for perverts and idiots.

Well, that was your first mistake.
I can't speak for the RP servers (all stories I have heard of them have been horrific) but I can assure you that the lower levels (on any server) will be riddled with all manner of the mentally challenged. When you get to around 20 or so, it tends to get better, and continues to improve as you level up. At the top-end content, most of the idiots have been filtered out and it's quite enjoyable.
If you are looking for some serious and mature people to play with, I am assembling a group of players on Runetotem currently and you're welcome to join us. I'm more than happy to teach you what you need to know about the game and answer any questions you may have.

I actually have played a lot of recent MMOs, surprisingly. I played an RP server on LOTRO and WAR, and never noticed anything like this. Shame really, am I better off on a normal server then? Or PvP maybe?
*EDIT*
Thanks Aethios, I'll check that out
Quite honestly , pick your poison. PVP will be the worse of all 3. I found PvE isn't too bad but only slightly better than any other type servers. Also from my own experience the RP server I was on , just seemed populated with older dbags.
The only way to get any enjoyment out of this game from a social aspect is to find a good guild.
I agree, finding a good guild is always the best way to avoid the idiots in WoW.
In my experience, "Normal" servers tend to have players who are more laid back and just want to get stuff done, while "PvP" servers are the kind of servers filled with hyper kids jumping around screaming "OMFG PWNT ROFL" all day long (and probably spamming the space bar, too).
The community in Lotro is superb, comparing to most other games. Surprisingly, the RP servers of LOTRo are great.
The community of WoW is very diverse, not surprisingly given the huge number of players. You see some of every kind. There is no need to worry about the odd guys, nor do you need 10,000 friends to get the game going. Find a few who you find entertaining and get started from there. If I feel upset with every people I disapprove, I can hardly breath.
If you like the Lotro community, there is no urgent need to migrate to WoW. I loved Lotro during my days there.
most of the time you will not have players doing any roleplay outside a guild. if you go into any of the big cities (for you the closest would be Stormwind), you will probably see people advertising guilds in the chat channels there. ask around for strict RP guilds, or go to the wow official forums, in the RP section they will have lists of guilds and servers which are considered good for RP. I think you just got unlucky with the server you picked. obviously every server is going to have little kids and the odd pervert but that shouldn't disuade you from playing. although I have never heard of anything as blatent as what you experienced (maybe its because I'm on the EU servers not the US).
Goldshire in RP servers has the reputation of being the cybersex place in WoW, many people make characters to RP servers just to have sex in Goldshire. So you picked up a bad location to start playing (human starting area), it's better to avoid people in there completely if you want to roleplay. And overall, roleplaying in WoW is best done with friends, guilds dedicated to roleplaying, or in events players occasionally arrange to RP servers.
My suggestion is, if you want to find mature players just play on PvE server, at least from my experience many of them are good. And don't enter pick-up instance groups with unknown low-level players on primetime, there's a better chance to meet nice low level people if you play at bit odd times. This is just based on personal experience, I don't know why it's so.
1. Visit the official forums
2. See which RP realm they recommend, as some of them are filled with kiddies
3. Whatever the server, you're gonna encounter retards the first few levels, but as you go, you'll start seeing more decent people.
4. Join a good RP guild and you'll be all set.
5. Enjoy the Game!
The rules of Debate are really simple; once you have to stoop to insults instead of facts, logic, or reason to try and win your argument, you've lost.
RP in modern MMO's is dead. If you want RP you'll have to look at the really old school games like MUD's etc. It's a shame, but RP has, and always will, cater to a very small demographic. It has no place in today's mass-market MMO's.
