My thoughts from Trial

Something about this game. . . just isn't *Fun*

I'm not sure, but I think for me it's the combat.  In PvP, you can take 10 damage or 500 damage and you never really feel like you've been hurt. . . damage comes from soooo many sources and it's so obscure that you never really feel any risk or danger.  Animations aren't good and you never get the feeling "Ouch, I've been hit!"

in DAoC/WoW/Even EQ1, theres a sound and text that says "ouch!"  Whether it's the crippling noise EQ makes, or the stagging sound DAoC makes, or the blood/sound/text that WoW makes.

The animations are bland and uninterresting.  The combat noise poorly represents the environment.  The combat never feels involved. . . you don't get hurt.  Almost feels like a nerf war.

Better Combat Text, Better Animation, Better Combat Sound.

Gaming is serious business.

I miss the noises the trolls make when you get hit in DAoC.

    Ear shattereing.

  • I agree. The "feel" of your character in action isn't so great.

Not really sure what you mean by combat "text" . . . if by that you mean the combat logs, well I don't spend time reading those in a fight.  Animations are indeed kinda lacking, but I suppose I just got used to it.  I only play a shadow warrior and a squig herder, so all I ever see are them placing imaginary arrows on their bows and firing them off--pretty simple.

I'd say goblins are the best race to play if you want noises.  I crack up all the time when I activate their sprint skill.  Heck, any noise they make sounds funny.

By Combat Text I mean the numbers above the head.  They really do mean something in todays games and even back in EQ days.

    EQ Style

Soandso has landed a crippling blow (1732)!. . . followed by a terrible bonesnapping noise

    WoW Style

Boom! Big numbers flash on the screen! . . . Gut wrenching slash noise

    DAoC Style

Heavy chop/bleed sound. . . red text.   Plus, the visual representation of a Troll with a 2hander.  You knew when he hit, it was going to hurt and if he didn't hit you heard the thud of a block.

Combat is so very important to me when I play a game and if it doesn't feel like I'm getting hurt or hurting the enemy I usually lose interest in the game.

This is one of the reasons I really dislike Warcraft, DoT's do SO much damage and your character really doesn't represent how much damage they are taking.  A Warlock can instant DoT you for 80% of your HP and your character just walks around losing hp.  Most of Warhammer is like that. . . Just tiny red numbers and a sound every now and then.

The best combat system is by far DAoC.  Reactive/Positional combat, no tiny numbers, no dps fodder.  You either got whaled on or you were Ok.  There is no inbetween crap.

    Gaming is serious business.

The same complaint comes from everyone whose played and I gave my friend the free trial cd key last night from Fileplanet now it's open to all and he downloaded played for 5 mins and said he doesn't like the feel of the combat and the spell effects look lame. So I'm going to use that account now (downloading the client) to see if anything improved since beta.

The problem I had with the game was the game felt like it had no soul, it just felt like a generic World of Warcraft. Like everything about the game played like a poor mans world of warcraft, like a B movie. The art was all second rate and the animations and spell efefcts were terrible and the game lacked any kind of humour, which was weird coming from Warhammer. There was also no gore which was weird coming from Warhammer and I was expecting the game to get me deep into the Warhammer lore but the game was just so generic I couldn't care less.

The world was really poorly made and the quests wern't fun and the PVP zones and scenarios were poorly designed too. I would just run around and see nothing amazing about the game and the whole way the world was made just felt off. Specially when you travel between the races 3 worlds you get this really horrible pointless movie of a dragon thing flying and the sound of the wings flapping doesn't match the animation.

I was expecting the mounts to animate really well and was so excited to ride a Cold One because they look badass on the table top game...... instead it looked so generic and crap. It animated really bad and the whole thing just felt really stiff.

The combat aswel just felt really bad because everyone seemed to have the same basic skills. Like everyone had the same kind of crowd control and the same ability to get away from it that it becauses pointless. To me also each class in the archetype played the same, was just like 2 sides of the same coin. Whats the point in that? I saw a WAR guide for WoW players where it puts every class in WAR in the WoW counter part and there was like 4 tanks and I played THe Orc and the Chaos tank and they played esactly the same but just had different names for things..... like whats the point in having more than one of the same thing? So it just ended up making each class feel watered down and bland and this is a problem EQ2 suffered with too in it's archetype system.

The PVP for keeps always turned out the same aswel where the zerg always wins because theres no tactics in the PVP as the combat system doesn't allow for it, we've all got the same basic skills. If I'm alone and I face 3 people in WAR then I'm always going to die 100% of the time but in WoW if I'm good enough I can kill them 3 people and thats the beauty of WoW's combat, that and it just feels instant where as WAR has this weird lag between actions and when it happens on the screen.

So yeh for me Why play WAR when you can play WoW?

I just wish'd WoW had keeps in contested zones for world PVP.

What was the highest rank that got? I don't think you REALLY expierenced the game at all, from what I read here.

Heh, Not with you on that one. All the races sometimes come back with a verbal stream when they get hit from time to time.

Always makes me laugh when my dwarf gets hit and he calls the MOB a bastard.

I played every class and every race and I played both scenarios and leveling up from the start. I played tier 4 PVP, keeps and city raids.......

Played it all and I gave my opinion on the game and it is one shared throughout most people.

The first point is definately a big one for me.

The combat is abstract.  Damage comes from everywhere.  Most enemy attacks are named in such a fashion you are left guessing as to what actually happened.  Its not bad at Tier I but as you get higher and higher, you can tell that the C&C designers really started to stretch things trying to come up with enough moves to fill out everyone's abilities.  (I would say that the game is the most fun at Tier 1 and gets progressively worse as it goes on.)

The classes you fight all have different moves and identities, its true, but not really to the point where it makes much of an impression on you when you are fighting them.

DL the addon called WSCT if you want to see scrolling combat text around your character.

And still, hundreds of THOUSANDS quit the game feeling the same way. I think they could care less about playing a lackluster of a game to endgame and experience all the lackluster there is, to realize the game as a whole is crap.

Everyone who quit always cite the same reasons. Boring. Sorry, BORING, forgot the caps. Lack of endgame. Lack of a "world" feel. Massive amount of bugs. Massive amounts of solo PvE instead of hyped up and promised PvP. Crashes. Memory leaks. A feeling of the game being unresponsive to your actions. Slow feel when fighting. Generic and bland graphics even at highest settings. Lag/graphics lag even on the most beefed up high end systems.

That's just a very tiny amount of the reasons people quit en masse too. Just to emphasize, if people are used to playing WoW or any other decent MMO currently out, more than likely with their friends too, what in the world would make them play WAR to begin with when it's such an obvious pile of lackluster?

  • NightbladeX1NightbladeX1 Member Posts: 201

Yes, the engine feels very muddy and unresponsive, one of the many reasons this game has failed.

  • CetraCetra Member UncommonPosts: 359

well..WAR is not perfect but its the closest thing to pvp MMO now for me. Not much choice. But its a fun game if you can just overlook some of its flaw. Most feel of class uniqueness start coming into play from high tier 2 onwards. I play an engineer and its so fun.

eve - spaceships war not my tea

    lineage 2 - mega grind

    wow - you kidding?

    Aoc - i hate funcom

darkfall - no faith, wait and see

  • TKAndyTKAndy Member Posts: 16

just a fyi, tier 1/2 is misleading...the game is really bad the closer you get to 40 lots of AoE CC, when it's not prime time your not going to get any PvP at all.

Just stuff a newb should know, this is for people that have jobs with little time to play MMO's
