Performance help

cuzzo222cuzzo222 Member Posts: 95

I am having extreme lag problems in game.

System stats:

3.06 Ghz HT

512 SODIMM RAM

Nvidia GeForce Go Fx5200

I am playing on a laptop, but other games run fine.I can run Counter Strike Source with the settings almost all the way up.I have the most recent video drivers.I know EQ2 has more people online and cutting edge graphics, but it gets to the point where i can barely move with setting virtually on the lowest settings.Anybody have any suggestions? Will more RAM help with the lag i have or even just getting DDR RAM?

Well I have 768 DDR RAM and I don't have much noticable lag. I'm running a 2Ghz processor too. I'm not the most technical person but I would say it was the ram.

    1700+ Athlon XP, 1 Gig RAM, Geforce4 Ti 4200 with 64MB card

    runs GREAT at "high performance"

if you have any problems, maybe because you dont have directx 9c or old drivers...
the 5200 Go is even slower than the 5200 . if your card has only 64 bit memory interface (dont know Go specs) you are screwed.

to all readers here: DONT EVER BUY ANY CARD WITH 64 Bit memory interface.
64 bit memory interface makes ANY 3d card a pile of crap. even a very old gerforce 3 would be much faster.

anyway: the geforce FX 5200 is a crappy card even without additional limitations

apart from that: 512 MB RAM is the MINIMUM to run EQ2. even Sony calls it the MINIMUM

no need to get angry there...believe me, buying this dell was not my choice, as i was getting half of it paid for me since i am going to college, i would have much rather built my own

  • AskatanAskatan Member Posts: 313

yeah, sorry... cahnged my posting already... I just came from another board where people bought that card in a desctop PC and then blamed the game for being badly programmed....

was still a bit upset... sorry, I know your case is different

and my vid card is supported.......

  • cuzzo222cuzzo222 Member Posts: 95
lol NP.i would also be ranting at people who bought a desktop with this vid card, which is total crap it seems for this game.and the game isnt badly programmed,as i have heard that its engine is meant to evolve over the years so that the graphics stay top of the line.hopefully in a few years i can build my own pc and be able to experience the great graphics

    Question
What are the Supported Video Cards for EverQuest II?
    Answer
To check the compatibility of your video card you may use our system scan utility [http://everquest2.station.sony.com/systemscan/]. If your video card is supported the supported driver for your card will be listed below. For instructions on how to update and install new drivers, please click here [Tech Support Installing Sound Video Drivers]. Be aware that many cards require that you properly uninstall your previous drivers before installing any new drivers. Not doing so can cause visual anomalies, system instability, and inability to render 3d properly.

    Question
What Geforce video cards are not supported ?
    Answer
The following Geforce cards will not work with EverQuest II MX100/200/400/420/440/460. Also any Geforce Go cards(only in laptops) will not work with EverQuest II. The game requires a video card that is Vertex and Pixel Shader capable, and these cards do not have those features.

    there you have it (unfortunately)

EDIT: according to nvidia, the 5200 Go HAS shaders.... read my last posting

  • AskatanAskatan Member Posts: 313

the vertex pixel shader thingy is much much worse than the 64Bit issue.... 64 bit means slow as hell, but without shaders, it SHOULD not even start the game..... wonder why it does... trying to get the specs from nvidia.com... back in a second

  • AskatanAskatan Member Posts: 313

according to nvidia the 5200 Go has shaders...

strange.... but I'll try to find out what exactly could not be compatible...

  • AskatanAskatan Member Posts: 313

ok... the 5200 Go seems to have all or at least closely to all features the 5200 has....

but according to a spped ranking, it is slower than even a Geforce 3 Ti 200 ... so I have to correct myself...

I guess it is just the lacking speed that makes it "incompatible" and the guys from the EQ2 knowledge base just didnt know better.

if your card would not have any shader technology, the game WOULD NOT START. definitively

check out this thread: maybe you can fix it at least a little

First off, I didnt notice how you are connecting to the game.  If it is by Dial-up or even a slower internet connection (say 256k), that could be a big part of the problem.

I am no tech geek, but if you have a good internet connection, my next concern would be the 5200 video card.  They are selling on Ebay for around $20 nowdays.  Not exactly new technology that EQ2 is made for.  Also upgrading your memory to atleast 768 or preferably 1024 (1 gig) would probably help as well.

Cheaper solutions might be to update your video driver, make sure that ALL unneccessary applications that are running in the background are closed while you play, defragging your harddrive, etc etc.

Hope I have helped in some way but doubtful of that, just stating my opinion  ;)

if i were you, i would just buy a desktop if its possible. other option would be upgrade, update, or drop your graphic settings to the lowest possible settings with nothing on at all. other than that cant really help you. also, dial up really wouldnt make much of a differance, mmo's take a very small amount of bandwidth.

P.S. zaxtor dial-up is 56k something like dsl would be 256k, i dont know what your talking about 256k would be slower???

    Did you say laptop?

Laptops with similar specs to a desktop are slower.

FX5200 is a slow card(Ti4200 is faster check some benchmarks ).Then you got the even slower laptop version.

Personally if you are not a trvaelling man i say ebay the lap top and build a mid range desktop with that money.

  • Zaxx99Zaxx99 Member Posts: 1,761

Jayheld, no what I meant by the 256K DSL connection slower stuff was that if he had either a 56k dial-up connection -OR- a high-speed connection on the slower side such as a 256k dsl then that might be part of the problem.  I myself, only pay $29.95 for a 1.5 m cable connection, which is obviously much faster then a 256k dsl connection would be.. I think anyhow  heh.

    RAM RAM RAM

I cant believe I just said that! I diddnt believe it until last night.

I was playing with the same problems as you... screen skips.. the game freezing up for a second... very hard to move in the cities. I got so fed up with it I shut off my computer and went to best buy and bought 1 gig of ram. I pluged it in and immediately the game is lag free. I have everything on medium settings and I dare lag to touch me now!

But seriously though, it's unreal how much that helped.

    Sempron 2800

    1 gig PC2700 ram

    ATI 9600

yea i wish i could sell this laptop and buy a desktop, but i do travel at least a few times during the college school year so i kinda need it.hopefully i can save up enough in about a year to build one.Right now i guess i will buy more RAM and hopefully that will help.Or i could even e-mail crap dell and ask if they could put in that Ti4200 or whatever card it is, though i doubt they have that model compatable with my laptop. Many people i have talked to have said RAM will make a big difference, although i will have to pay $500 from dell for 1 gig, but only $200 from newegg.anybody know for sure if RAM not from dell would be compatable?i would look for the same amount of pins and that crap.
