Let me start off by saying that I am not trying to troll or bash on all of your game, I am just trying to find out if the game might now be worth it for me to buy.
I was a fairly early beta tester and the game seemed fairly bland and repetitive to me. To be specific the game felt like id get a quest to find and kill someone, and I would get into a shit combat, finish the job, come back and get another quest. The problem is that it felt like every quest was worded differently but it all felt like I was doing the same quest over and over.
My question to all of you that play POTBS is, what makes you play? also has there been any good content improvements since launch?

Pretty much the combat/missions are still the same, redundant.
If you are counting on the FLS generated content, it will get old after a while, but what MMORPG doesn't?
How long can you run around with the magic sword of uber nerdiness and beat on goblins while playing just another elf dressed in lime green tights? Or run up to dudes with exclamation marks over their head that are too damn lazy to do anything themselves? How long can you listen to tripe from that unwashed 35 year old uber nerd in charge of your guild that plays 16 hours a day, yet still lives in his parent's basement?
I actually find the fun and challenge in the game is the economy. Set up a ship building operation, identifying the key components that you need to control costs on and build yourself, then hunting the market for the best prices on those that you cannot build. A single account, one person, Society independant ship building operation diversified into two locations which are strategically selected for minimal attack exposure.
My challenge on Blackbeard server was to acquire ships at no cost. For example, Van Hoorn's sold for $10,000 in Guanica, $15,000 in Florida. I bought three, sold two, spent $30,000, made $30,000. Net cash outlay for a Van Hoorn, zero. Did it again in New Spain with Postillionens.
Bought 160 heavy roundshot at $35, sold it at $90, cleared $8,800 profit.
Spain put up common wine at $1 for shipbuilding, I bought it all and placed it right back on their port market for $300. So, some Spanish provisioner comes along and asks the Spanish supplier why their price is still $300, rather than the $1 they were supposed to drop it to. The Spanish seller can't explain it, he sold them all for $1, but there they all are still on the market at $300. Who's zooming who? The buyer may have been pissed, but he needed the wine for provisions, so he bought them off me at $300.
......and the beat goes on.
I played thru my two week trial, made just under $600,000. There was a group running "dailies", like a noob I asked them to explain "dailies", they did, and invited me to run them with them after I leveled up some more. Yea, right, cold day in hell you'll catch me sitting on a dock trying to round up a group to do 'dailies" when I can pull in about $300,000/week in the market.
The economy is the fun part, I still love it.
In my opinion, all games are repetitive/redundant where PvE is concerned.
1. Talk to quest guy
2. Go kill something
3. Talk to quest guy again to get paid.
4. Find another quest guy
5. Go back to step 1
It's been that way in every online game I've played... sure, some games have more elaborate PvE scripts with flashy effects (I haven't seen anyone do it better than Blizzard yet, though I haven't played WAR or AoC...), but even for all the bells and whistles it's essentially the same PvE drudgery. They were exciting for the first 50 /played hours or so, but after that... not so exciting (though the roleplayer in me still loves a good story).
I play for PvP. I play to take peoples' pixels and to have mine taken away by better, faster, savvier players. I'm not as young as I once was, so I can't get my competitive needs filled with things like pick-up basketball or street hockey or football, so I get it via PvP in online games. I hate FPS, I suck at RTS, so that leaves MMOs. MMOs with a risk attached to losing in PvP are a plus.
The major part of the original beta testers have left & there are now some new youngsters on their forums.
There have been improvements here & there but nothing major, mostly re-vamps of existing systems.
New content has been very slow in being released, one year after release & FLS still have not implemented their pre-release goals. Boredom can set in fast at lvl50.
