I'm getting so sick of all the WoW hating on this site. Its just a very mainstreamed MMO that is accessible for newcomers to genre and casual players. However, with tons of endgame PvE content, it also continues to satisfy the needs of hardcore raider guilds. So it doesn't have the full-loot of UO, the technical complexity of AC and AO, or the xp loss and corpse runs of EQ1, get over it already. Its a good game that does well because it delivers content in truckloads.
The point wasn't to hate on WoW. It's to point out that if you don't like WoW gameplay (which we don't) then you have to support an indy company that ISN'T making a game like WoW. If you don't, it only shows companies that WoW is the only thing that's going to make money, and is therefor the only thing worth making. So, by buying an unfinished product like Darkfall, you say "Please, I'll buy ANYTHING that isn't WoW!"..

who's the "we"?
I actually like wow. I come home from work, kiss my life, talk to my kids, sometimes help them with the home work, have dinner with my family, eventually log in wow, kill some people on the battlegrounds, run 1 instance, go to bed -where my wife is- do whatever I have to do, sleep and go back to work next day.
ten years ago I played UO. I was 22 or so, wasn't married, didn't had kids, or professional and familiar responsibilities. I could be online 5 or more hours, get to bed at 02:00, go half asleep to the classrooms, eat some trash food and be happy about it... life changes,, the simplicity of wow - that many despise, allows "normal adult people on the 30's " to actually have a chance on playing a MMORPG and achieve same degree of satisfaction.
And now you, my dear sir, are telling me I need to fund a company , an indy company -what the hell is a indy company... company made by the sioux or apaches ?- just because they aren't making a game like wow?
And yes I do know what an indy company is. I'm just tired of seeing the indy argument used to give some slack when DF has some issues- some that are acceptable. some that are not.
Sorry, i would prefer to fund a company that can actually make a wow like game that is better than wow - what didn't happened with WARHAMMER or AOC, but looking at the economy, in a moment where people are losing their jobs and houses, where most countries are immersed in a deep financial crisis, might be better to fund charity and help keep some food on the table for those that are in the fringes of poverty.
I do hope DF survives and gives the market segment it was aimed for the game those people want, But thats all, they are not going to get my money just because they made a sandbox game that reminds me of my younger days until the moment that game is clearly better than UO in all aspects and not only graphics or they stop charging premium subscriptions like they are delivering a premium product.
Yes, lets support the poor support and management of Aventurine so their existence can perpetuate more like-minded indy companies...
First, you can't fund them because they won't take your money because they are stupid. Second, Mortal Online is a much better option as they seem to actually have a proper dev team in place that aren't full of people suffering from mental retardation.
That game is a completly different game. Why you may ask? Because the game isn't deisgned to have more than 12v12 PvP battles and the choices a person makes is more permanent. Basically, a person builds a perma class and then can use account points to build another character (6 max). I have a feeling that game is going to be instanced.
Also, the MO dev team is using a already existing engine to build the game. 50-75% of the leg work is already done for them.
A) Your 'feeling' about MO being instanced is opposite to the official forums stating that there WILL NOT be instances.
Because it is not instanced, you cannot limit the number of players PVPing.
C) Knocking a company for using middleware? Star Vault had the foresight to realize that creating an MMO engine from the ground up was simply not an option. They appear to be decently managed because they realize that an 8 year development time is ridiculous.

Fine, MO will be an open seamless world. Still not going to have sieges and they have said themselves the game's PvP is designed for small group PvP. Since it doesn't have sieges I hope it will have a ladder system of some sorts if not then I'm less intrested in the game. Also, I wasn't knocking them for using a middle a pre built engine. I was simply stating that the reason the game is suppose to be a launched fairly soon and not taking as long as say a WoW or AoC is because they aren't using their own engine. SWtOR is using a pre built engine and should be done in a year or twos time as well. So claiming that they are more compotent because they are releasing a game in a shorter time frame is a moot point.
Not saying it won't be good, just saying you can't really compare the two games. They have enough differences to be differnt catagories of games.
I thought the phrase "wowlikeyness" in this topic was related to the lack of consequence pvp found in "mainstream" mmo's now at day's but apparently it isn't.
So il just say that from my perspective the success of darkfall means a whole lot for the mmo genre and not because its an indie game or because the ruleset is so foreign compared to most succesfull mmo's on the market but because it will serve as a reminder to companies like blizzard and turbine that men lie...women lie....but numbers dont.
I remember back in the day when just about every mmo had an optional pvp server with a harsher ruleset that was put there simply to appease a smaller fanbase that wanted to play there product with more of a risk-reward factor involved.
As the years passed that same fanbase has grown tenfold but companies like blizzard and turbine (who are imo 2 of the top 3 mmo developers to date) wont acknowledge it....well not yet atleast. WoW is a solid mmo just as LOTRO and imo if these companies never ditched the traditional PvP server format that worked for games like AC1 and EQ, Darkfall would not even be on alot of radars especially with all the concerns that AV has given us.
But as it stands its the only true pvp game on the horizon (unless you dont mind point clicking) so im gonna give it a shot and dont get me wrong...i hope Darkfall is an amazing game and everyone thats been waiting for it for all these years gets exactly what they have been waiting for.
But if it sucks i atleast hope that the interest and hype and more importently the preorder and sub numbers dont go unnoticed.
OP you are a complete idiot if you think Darkfall is the only indie developer out there, I guarantee you that if Darkfall fails completely another indie developer will take up the cause, in fact there are a few other developers even now which are making games that will be released in a couple or so years.
Fearmongering ftw.
"men lie...women lie....but numbers dont."
Information coming from companies and corporations is about as trustworthy as what comes from many politicans and government.
Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.
So...you want me to buy a product that is unfinished and, by all accounts, "broken", so companies will stop putting out "WoW clones"...hmmm. I'd rather not pay them, so that companies will see that putting out unfinished games is unacceptable. The companies need to test these games before release, and not release with many bugs and exploits. Just my opinion...
I choose option #3 : spend the money that would go to any of those games (Wow or Darkfall) on beers until the a company that will make a game with all those features that Darkfall supposed to have had on release PLUS some acceptable eye candy(graphics, animations, sound etc.) and makes good on delivering that which it promised

if you like wow.. then fine. No one said you didn't. The "we" is those who DO NOT like WOW's game play.
I'm tried of the indy compnay argument as well. There were a lot of indy companies 10 years ago that made GOOD games. So, fuck that bullshit of "indy company, that's why the launch sucks!!"
Meanwhile Dkevlar.. go back to wow. Reading is less important there.
When you look at an MMO I wish it could be all about the game but the truth is you have to evaluate the company as well. Aventurine does not instill a lot of confidence based on their actions. They perform a limited launch due to the simple fact the game is not yet ready. Let me be clear you are PAYING for a beta and what is worse is those paying KNOW IT! Talk about serving koolaid to the public. To make matters worse Aventurine set their own limits for the startup and STILL could not handle it. For gods sake, if they cannot handle what they say they can how can they handle a full load? Please do not give me the small and new company lines. A few years agao a company called CCP released a little game called EVE. They where a small company and this was their first game, yet they released the only true single shard game going and have not had the MAJOR issues Darkfall has had from the start. I hope Darkfall succeeds. I like the premise of their system, they are using some areas EVE has proven work and built from there, bravo. However as a company they have not done ANYTHING to impress me and I am concerned that I will be dropping cash on a game that will be dead in 6 months tops. I HOPE I am wrong but until they prove themselves I will not touch their product. As for the wowlieyness, if you want something different there are quite a few out there, Darkfall is different true, but it is not break that much new ground.
you're right about the company thing.
how many people won't touch SOE products because of the blatant lies told by SOE? i'll use ONE example in ONE game, because it's one everyone knows; BUT, do not be mistaken, there are many examples over pretty much all the games under the station pass.... players were told no major changes coming thru, game was staying how it was... go ahead and buy the new expansion... then after they'd sold X copies of that expansion BOOM the nge hit and completely changed the game from the ground up... i'm surprised someone didn't sue them for bait&switch or false advertisement.
before anyone gets on the stupid train - that is ONE example in ONE game for SOE.
soe has that spy game and dc universe in the works... based upon what i've seen in both the quality of the station pass games and the stewardship of soe -- i'll not bother to even try either of those games; because of the brand name - SOE.
more and more, it's adults paying the big bucks for multiple accounts and supporting these MMOs. by adults, i mean family people. not some college/high school kids. a lot of "us" believe in supporting a good company and watching a bad company fall on its face.
it's one thing to put up with a shoddy product, if the makers of the game are forthcoming and pretty honest with the players... if they keep the players in the loop on the ups and downs and such. av has been condescending and acting as if you're winning some kind of lotto by being allowed to play their subpar rendition of uo2.
you reap what you sow. all the fanatics for gods-n-heroes, aoc, war, hellgate:london, vanguard, et cetera... we've all seen this initial blah blah'ing by people too busy posting to actually play this new and ground breaking game... we've seen it time and time again.
we speak with our money. all the venom spat by fanbois will not ever change facts, or get people to trust their cc information to something as iffy as this av outfit. but then, it is said - a fool and his money are soon parted.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
OP you are a complete idiot if you think Darkfall is the only indie developer out there, I guarantee you that if Darkfall fails completely another indie developer will take up the cause, in fact there are a few other developers even now which are making games that will be released in a couple or so years. Thanks for the breaking news about indie developers there but you faild to mention that a huge percentage of those mmo's will never see the light of day much less the budget and time that AV has been able to put into DF.
Fear mongering....wow, the only thing i was implying was that the truth about a games success or lack thereof always surfaces even if sometimes you have to read between the lines....
AOC had a server merger not very long ago....Mythic is post-poning the release of a warhammer xpac to improve the current state of WAR....Turbine the company is making all kind of headlines for the success its having with lotro.
But judging by your post history none of that matters to you does it?...Im actually planning to give Darkfall a go as soon the NA realease goes live.
But something tells me you never had any intention of trying the game yourself ...so tell me why your here again and not in the wow forums saying positive things about that game?
I am all for supporting the little guys, especially when it looks like they have passion in what they are trying to do and they are giving it an honest go.
However, even small independant companies need to show a little effort to be worthy of some support. Ignoring everything about the game, the simple state of the website speaks volumes. I have heard rabid fans admit it is the worst place to get information, because it is so out of date. It is insane to think that an mmo company struggles with a simple website about their own product.
I wish darkfall all the luck in the world, but there is no need to support them out of some crusade for a different style of game. Giving good money blindly for what may turn out to be a bad product just encourages more companies to do the same.
it's one thing to put up with a shoddy product, if the makers of the game are forthcoming and pretty honest with the players... if they keep the players in the loop on the ups and downs and such. av has been condescending and acting as if you're winning some kind of lotto by being allowed to play their subpar rendition of uo2.
To support a company and product like DFO because they re a small company and needs support is stupid. Changing MMOs for the future if we support them, well maybe if it isn t DFO. That game won t change anything. The game will survuve for the rabid fans, but will go the way of SB IMO. Wait till cities are built and need to be defended 24/7 these people that think it s the most amazing thing since sliced bread will soon find out that RL is a little more important then losing sleep over a virtual building in a virtual world. If not then well thats sad. As said I will not support a small company as crappy as this on who can t even get out a boxed version, or even enough copies for people to play, ah nm I m so confused at how anyone can support that.
soon find out that RL is a little more important then losing sleep over a virtual building in a virtual world. If not then well thats sad.
Nah.. they'll never find out. DArkfall is for the Hardcore..
Hehe maybe not. I was in the biggest guild in SB on if i remeber correctly WAR server. DHL was the name, all the leaders left due to what I said above. It will happen to some but yes you re right the so called "hardcore uber leet" players will never leave.

Nah.. they'll never find out.
