Originally posted by Valeran The CEO of EA made a statement during a quarterly financial conference call to investors that micro transactions would be a part of TOR. Now the developers have since backed off of that statement but did not deny it either. I do not need an official announcement to foresee this. I would be very surprised if the CEO was to be shown a liar given that the statement was made to investors. The FTC frowns upon such things especially given the current economic climate and state of the US market and the scrutiny companies are now under.
And the very next day that same CEO made an announcement stating he misunderstood/made a mistake about the planned billing model. Then there was a massive "e-riot" on the official boards and an almost immediate drop off in the various ratings the game had on different sites like this one. THEN the Dev's backed off.
My point is *no one* but a few people know what the plans are at this point, and they could even be in a state of flux due to that instant backlash (doubtful, but who knows for sure). We just don't know right now. We won't know for sure until Bio/LA/EA makes an official announcement. Until then anything anyone says is pure speculation. Valeran please don't take this as a personal attack, I don't mean for it to sound like that. While I want people to make sure Bio/LA/EA hears peoples opinions of a micro based billing model I also want to make sure the game doesn't get trashed for something that turns out to not even happen. I hope you understand where I'm coming from
Personally I really hope the game is not micro based, I won't support the game if it is. Which would really kill me as I've been looking forward to a new SW game ever since SOE started trying to "fix" SWG
Yup bioware made an annoucement the next day that there was no official announcement for the games billing, and the forum jockeys all quietly went poof

I didn't take it as a personal attack...just posting what I have observed. I did not see where where the CEO made a retraction the next day only that the devs made a statement so if you have a link where the CEO made a retraction it would be appreciated.
That all being said....the market trend in MMOs right now is utilizing micro transactions along with montly subs. I would be very surprised if they did not follow suit.
Linky for Valeran and Aleos. Best I can do off a quick search atm.
I should also be more specific on my personal opinion. I wouldn't support it if it was the classic type of micro based billing system. If they did it in such a way that you could only get "swag" type of stuff I might be ok with that. What I won't go for is if you can purchase game changing type of equipment via RMT's. In my opinion that would just make it so "he with the most money/highest credit limit" wins while making everything I earned in game somewhat worthless. I think you know where I'm coming from
That was the retraction I was speaking of. The interesting thing to note is that they did not flatly deny that micro transactions will be included. When I read the statement it tells me that the misunderstanding was that they didn't want the CEO to speak about it when he did but time will tell.
I am not sure that the Asian model will work in the west.
One thing that micro transcactions do is that once they introduce it they will start adding more than just fluff. Use the SWG TCG as a perfect example.
In my opinion that would just make it so "he with the most money/highest credit limit" wins while making everything I earned in game somewhat worthless. I think you know where I'm coming from
How would this be any less acceptable than "he with the most free time to squat on a spawn point" wins?
I don't think it's impossible to have a model where MT and questing both produce comparable gear. I would be interested in something like that. One approach should not invalidate the other.

Too bad most Western MMO players don't agree. SOE's inclusion of RMT in their various games, in different forms, has been less than well received or successful.
Perhaps Smed thinks all MMO players like RMT grinders, that is not the case. At least those are "free", whereas all the SOE stuff comes with a monthly fee.

Because that requires you to actually play the game while the other doesn't? Yeah, that seems like a logical explanation.
Anyway, I personally am a HUGE Star Wars fan and a SWG vet, but I'm not really excited about TOR. Honestly, I get the impression it is going to be far too single player oriented, with personal story arcs and squads of your own personal NPC goons. I also think it looks way to cartoonish for my tastes. On top of that, the whole RMT thing where the CEO let it slip and then they played Damage control by claiming "Nothing is official" sets me off too as I won't play an RMT game.
As for STO, I'm not a Star Trek fan at all so I'm not really interested in that either.
I'm really looking forward to Jumpgate Evolution and Earthrise.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike Loved: Star Wars Galaxies Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
I need to update my previous post. Evidently there -won't- be multiplayer, player-on-board, ships in STO. You have a crew of NPCs and everyone's a captain. On one hand, I love my Mastermind in COV and this could be fun. On the other hand? WAUGHHHH! The whole theme of Star Trek shows is a cast of colorful characters who live, together, on a ship or space station. It's the bloody damned point of it all.
I know it works fine. I've played MUSHes and MMOs with crewed ships and loved it.
Ah, well, like I like good NPC/pet classes so this should be up my alley. And evidently player characters can 'ride in' someone else's ship, they just can't actively /do/ anything useful but roleplayers will sort it out. Hopefully a multiplayer option will be something they seriously look at eventually. It's huge.

But...players get a couple of sacrificial red shirt NPC guys for away teams right?
I know you're kidding. It seems a bit more detailed than that. The NPCs are evidently named individuals in their own right with special skills and advancing ranks over time. They're persistant entities not randomly generated canon fodder though I don't doubt you'll want a red shirt or two tagging along on away teams.
Not quite sure how much control you have over them or just how customisable they are in terms of either appearance or skillsets yet. Anyone know?

I just want to make sure Tech Sergent Wilson snuff's it when my team beams down to the planet and that my Captain avatar can get into the instance where you have to make out with the green chick.
