DFO In A Nutshell...

NupeNupe Member Posts: 22

On 29 August 2001, Razorwax announced the development of Darkfall and launched its official website. Today is March 3rd, 2009. That’s almost 8 years in development. And what does this community and Aventurine have to show for it?

• Less than 6,000 users?

• None of which can stay logged in for over a few hours.

• Some of which get stuck in the world and never get out.

• Fragmented guilds/players who can’t even log in at the same time.

• A large portion of the community left out and behind due to a failed purchasing system.

• Double, triple, no charge no post-backs and other failures in the purchasing system.

• Shutting down customer support and forums because you simply couldn’t deal with the clients.

• The worst community relations of any MMO in history. (IRC cowboys != community relations)

• The only MMO in history to miss its own release date.

• The worst AI in the history of MMO’s

• The worst UI in the history of MMO’s (debatable I suppose!)

• The worst Quests in the history of MMO’s (Why did you even bother).

• The most tedious combat system in the history of ANY game FPS or MMO.

• Suppression of anything remotely negative about your performance as a service provider. And failure to take responsibility for your mistakes.

Now to be fair I want to talk about what they have done correct:

• PVP full loot.

• FFA PVP.

You forgot to add that its one of the worst player communities to date.  Even constructive critism is met with unfair hatred.

Played : WOW, LOTRO, COH/COV, EQ2, SWG, and WAR.
    Playing EVE Online and AOC.

Long story short.  DFO devs promised the world and wholly failed to deliver.  I don't consider this current shenanigan to be a launch.  Rather, it's a pay to play beta.  The UI is archaic.  The combat is archaic.  The character development system is archaic.  The graphics are archaic.  This game is not a long term game.  It will not hold most people's attention longer than a month.  I beta tested the game with the intent of purchasing but after beta'ing for about a month I realized I was just not enjoying the game no matter how hard I tried to.

The game gets a fat F as in Fail.

    • The worst Quests in the history of MMO’s (Why did you even bother). (Its a sandbox game that just came out what do you expect 1000s of quest? Other than that same as every other MMO in design)

You don't like sandbox games. Good to know. Then don't play them.

P.S. FPS style combat for an MMO isn't archaic.

Do you have any first-hand knowledge you would like to share?

Sure, I beta tested for a month.  I began thinking I'd be buying this game 100%.  After a month of beta, the probability of me buying the game dropped to about 20%.  Now, that probability is 0%.

The combat has no depth at all.  The combat is not fun.  The world is empty.  Mob AI is terrible.  PvP comes down to a game of cat and mouse or what I call tom and jerry.  It takes far too long to kill any one player.  The launch or delayed launch or start of pay to play beta was a disaster.

It got to the point where I was logging in beta not to play but to set up my macro.  Why would I pay to do this.  And yes, I had to macro because I did not enjoy PvP combat enough to do it constantly and it was essentially impossible to solo 95% of the mobs in beta without resorting to some bug abuse.  Thus the only way for me to raise my skills would be to macro.

The fact that you think a sandbox mmo should have tons of quests and that you think DFO is the first MMO to miss a launch negates everything you say.

You are illieterate or unable to comprehend simple english.  I never said DFO should have tons of quest. In fact, my post queries why the there are quest in the game to begin with.

Secondly, DFO is the first MMO to miss it's launch date.  Not the first to cancel a launch date but the first to actually miss the date.  This is clear and a fact.

    • FFA PVP.

all those things are trivial when compared to alternative boring theme park games ...where every new one is a rehash of a rehash.

im gonna get this game when i can because its the type of game i want to play even with all the problems .

it has a small dev team like 5 people...so i understand 99% of what they are going though and will wait for my chance to get in.

There is nothing wrong with theme park games.  If you want a sand box game then go play Shadowbane (free and better than DFO) or AoC (also better than DFO).

    AOC isnt a sandbox......

    ..............neither is Darkfall atm

    Iiii-iiiiiit's.... me!!! *Hooray*

    • Less than 6,000 users? (Staged Release ftw)

    • None of which can stay logged in for over a few hours. (Pure conjecture)

    • Some of which get stuck in the world and never get out.

    • Fragmented guilds/players who can’t even log in at the same time. (Player problem no AV's)

    • A large portion of the community left out and behind due to a failed purchasing system.

    • Double, triple, no charge no post-backs and other failures in the purchasing system. (Welcome to international banking)

    • Shutting down customer support and forums because you simply couldn’t deal with the clients. (Pure conjecture. Official reason is lack of bandwidth which is reasonable)

    • The worst community relations of any MMO in history. (IRC cowboys != community relations)

    • The only MMO in history to miss its own release date. (False)

    • The worst AI in the history of MMO’s (False because its better than tank and spank which is easy mode)

    • The worst UI in the history of MMO’s (debatable I suppose!) (Most default UIs suck, the difference is DFO is fully customizable)

    • The worst Quests in the history of MMO’s (Why did you even bother). (Its a sandbox game that just came out what do you expect 1000s of quest? Other than that same as every other MMO in design)

    • The most tedious combat system in the history of ANY game FPS or MMO. (Personal opinion)

Lots of excuses.  That is all I see in orange.  Companies put out these bad products because MMO players continue to prove they will gladly pay for garbage for at least a few months.

You don't like sandbox games so don't play them. Why trash them if you don't even plan on playing the game. The orange text aren't excuses, they are known problems that other games have and counter arguments.

Actually DFO cancled its first launch date and pushed it back. Other games have done this as well. The reason for the quest in DFO, right now, is for turtorial purposes. Obviously you haven't played the game.

Not a full on sand box, I agree, but moreso than WoW and EQ and those types of games.

Shadowbane is a sandbox mmo whcih I have played since launch and play today.  I also play EvE online right now.  You will have to come up with a better excuse or more straw man arguments cause your current one fails.

See, for me, the two pro's you listed, I would list as cons.

    Pros:

    • Sandbox game (moved from your con)
    • Skill based, not level based
    • Open world (not instanced)

    Cons:

    • PvP oriented, very little PvE (I'm more a fan of the RvR concept or specific areas for pvp as I don't always want to PvP, but that is a personal opinion)
    • FFA PvP, to me that will bring out the worst in people.  When it is FFA PvP, people will hack, cheat and exploit at any opportunity to prove they pwn.  Sad, but you only need to look at other FFA PvP games to see that (ala Shadowbane as an example)
    • Launch...  I'm sorry, not much good can be said about this
    • billing system...  From what I hear, this is horizons level of issues here, hope for their sakes they get it straighted out.

I am sure I can come up with more on both sides, the point is, it is all personal opinion except for the launch and billing issues (as those are verifiable and well documented issues)

But even I, someone declared to be a troll on this forum can find some good in it...  Just isn't the game for me, that doesn't mean I want to see them fail, go splat or any of numberous other statements made about the compentency of Adv.
