Hey, finally decided to join the website since i've been reading it for a good few months and figured the readers here could help me out with my dilema. I've played EQ2, UO, FF11, Vanguard, AoC, LOTRO, Neocron, Guild Wars etc and find myself completely lost at what to play.
I played EQ2 since launch and quit around Christmas time having taken some time away from the game. Playing EQ2 and raiding in a hardcore raid guild unfortunately put me in a "hardcore" mentality, where I had to play a certain type of class, be the best, do 4-5 instances a day on top of raiding 3-4x a week until 5am.
I picked up Lord of the Rings and can say I'm enjoying it.. but even with the layed back approach, friendly people and large world.. I can't help but feel like something is missing..
I don't have that feeling for Lord of the Rings that I had when i was following Vanguard pre-release... or when i first awoke on the beaches of Tortage (Age of Conan). I had considered going back to Vanguard, but from what I hear the game has died a death and only those really committed to the game still play. Plus, correct me if i'm wrong, but it seems as if they've really taken a back seat to development on the game.
I still have Age of Conan sat here next to me.. and I was on the verge of re-installing the game. The one thing that puts me off majorly though, was that I could have sworn that the new "saviour" of Funcom had resigned according to a post I read 2-3 days ago.. It makes me wonder about the future of the game. Sure, a game won't ever last forever.. but it would be nice to know you're not joining a game that's already going downhill.
Long story cut short, I like Lord of the Rings, I really do.. but it doesn't excite me like Vanguard or AoC used to.. and I feel like i'm merely playing it to feel comfortable rather than take a leap into what some people deam as "failing" games.
Any advice on Vanguard, AoC etc would be appreciated. Would be nice to put my mind at rest and just pick a game already.. I just don't know if I have the time to read up on both to make a learned decision.. so that's where you guys come in..

AoC "saviour" Craig Morrison has not quit, and I have not seen any indication that he is going to.
He has been very good for the game.
Hey hope I can be helpful here.
My friends and I just moved to Age of Conan back in December and for the most part we have been really enjoying the game. We have encountered very few of the bugs that have been reported so lucky for us. However it appears one of our group of 4 who have been gaming together since the days of EQ1 really doesnt like the lack of high fantasy feel to the game and really doesnt want to play anymore. While the rest of us love the adult content and brutality plus the fast paced combat. He is wanting to venture elsewhere and we are just deciding where. If you are a high fantasy fan then the game might lack somewhat in that department. We have been debating on what to play if we do quit. Which he has already informed us he is letting his account expire.
Now onto Vanguard. A game which I am a HUGE fan of for the most part. Your information regarding the status of the game is pretty off though. The player population in Vanguard is actually on the upswing. The devs keep putting alot of time and effort into the game with constant updates. The bugs that the game was riddled with at launch for the most part have been fixed. They just recently uppped the level from 50 to 55 and added 2 new raid areas, and upgraded a high level dungeon. There are also plans of adding an Alternate Advancement system to the game.
Now the reason we left. The Raid system pretty much killed the game for me. Now I hear the 2 new raid areas might actually fix the issue I had with it. I played a paladin in a Top Tier guild on our server. However tanks being a VERY popular class in that game and with limited number of positions in raids I found myself sitting twiddling off in a side group for hours on end waiting for a chance to actually do ANYTHING when I went on a raid. Meaning not only was I sitting inactive but it made it impossible to gear up to actually be able to handle the mbos our guild was wanting to take down. One of the reasons rotations didnt work the way they should is due to the fact that our guild leader and 2 officers were also tanks, and usually you only needed 2 active tanks during a raid with some encounters needing 3. APW (raid dungeon) was an 18 man raid and we usually had 4 to 5 extra tanks sitting with their thumbs up their asses while the officer tanks got to actually play.
Other than that Vanguard is a great game. I Just decided that I wanted to try something else and left to AoC after feeling a little burnt out on the raid system. I had my 3 other friends follow suit. Ohh we have played Vanguard Pretty much since launch with about a 8 month break thrown in there. Right now there is a free trial if you wanted to see it for yourself. just check out their website.
We have actually been talking about either LoTRO or WAR if we cant talk our friend into staying with AoC.
Anyone who plays Vantard hates MMOs and gamers.
Contributing to that sleezy front for a get-rich-quick scheme is saying "Its OK to lie to your customers, deliver a failed product, ruin a company, lose the jobs of your employees, and show a complete lack of character and STILL make money on subscriptions because people don't care about any of that"
I have been thinking of coming back to AoC, it was already the only MMO I wanted to play, and now that it has the features it was lacking looks like the best MMO on the market

Hehe, sounds like you have just perfectly described Funcom.
Hehe, sounds like you have just perfectly described Funcom.
No, not even close, take your baseless haterism elsewhere... they made some serious bonehead moves, and Gaute was a millstone around their neck, but they didn't purposely make an unplayable shell of a game to present to their investors to keep the ponzy scheme going like Sigil did...

I would have to agree. For myself, I just hate Vanguard as it is not a fun game...period. So much to do, and all of it slow, plodding, tedious, boring, and the ugly characters do not help.
But, both SOE and Funcom have major issues running as a company. Luckily, AoC has a better game going for it, and I just try to ignore the company at that point...just like I did when I played EQ2.
I would say at least try it, because 15 bucks never hurt anyone. Not like there are any great movies right now (and no I am not quite sold on Watchmen at this point...need more data!), so save that cost and have entertainment for a month instead of 2 hours.
Cheers
Don't blame or hate the game, blame the ones making/made the game..... Vanguard is a nice little game, very immersive, pretty world. It's just really skinny, it would need to get fattened up but no one's going to spend much more money into it. Very sad.

You cannot separate the dev and the games. The only input players REALLY have is with their dollars, and when you give money to a scam game, you send the message that scamming gamers can still make you money.

Hmmm not sure why the hostility? I actually think both games have suffered from bugs. AoC was alot of Fun. But Vanguard has depth and better community than most other games I have seen. I also understand why people were upset and left Vanguard when it came out. I was there. The Devs did way overpromise what would was going to be in the game when it Launched. I would actually blame SOE over Sigil for that though they are the ones that pulled the plug on Sigil early and rushed the original Development team. Now I will say I dont agree with the way Brad handled things in the end.
However on a Current up to date note. Vanguard Offers a very immersive game full of depth. Many of the things that were originally promised have made their way into the game. IE flying mounts Huge raid dungeons. and probably one of the most challenging game worlds around. It is definately group oriented game (not meaning you cant solo) but for those who have a solo mentality probably would best be suited looking elsewhere. Vanguard group wise is probably one of the best games going. People there actually know how to work as a team. PUGs are even fairly common and there isnt this HUGE FEAR of PUGS like you see in other games. Much like the older days of MMOs.
That being said. The game is not perfect but in all honesty is any game perfect?
As for poor art design. I will say thats a 50/50 issue. There are some things in the game that will just blow you away visually and some things that leaving you going Mehh... Granted if you want to truly see what Vanguard has graphically you better have a pretty decent computer set up.
Age of Conan is just an amazing looking game all around graphically. Was kinda hard getting to used to zoning again when in Vanguard it was so open. Made the AoC game seem alot smaller.
Either game would be a good go to. If you were hyped over Vangaurd when it first came out, and felt let down you should probably give their free trial a go. It has come A LONNNNG way.
Ohh one last positive note on Vanguard. They probably have some of the best class balancing I have seen an any MMO.. there truly is no one overpowered class or one class that no one likes or one that is useless.
Class balancing is easy in a PvE game, not exactly what I'd call a feature...

This is a gaming forum, what -exactly- else is the point of this place?
Move on and do what? Hold hands and sing cumbaya?
Howbout you don't bother with the pointless posts, and I'll be happier.

Well i would definitely recommend you to resub and give AOC another try
And the new GD Craig Morrison did not resign. He is still here making the game better and better
The guy who resigned was the CFO Olav Sandnes. So dont worry m8

wow, someone nerd raging in the morning.
Vanguard is not a bad game, and it WAS developed by sigil. SOE did not come into the picture until much much later. Why would microsoft want soe to take over? No....the game was bad at launch but it has more depth, more to do, than most other pve games. The engine is still clunky yes, but you do need a decent rig to set every thing on max...and the graphics (minus the character walking.running) are gorgeous.
SOE did bring the game back to life, and for the most part the 2 pve servers are very busy most times.
umm i read the thread and i dont troll the vantard forum. I am speaking from personal experience. I just got off a month of VG, actually a good game, some bugs, but very deep.
I never said SOE developed the thing, I said they made it a GAME, rather than the working demo used to string along Microsoft...

Hahaha, hey Sturmrabe, where have you been? I haven't seen you posting for a while
@ OP: as others have said, 15 bucks is nothing. Just try it out for yourself, AoC has improved a lot lately.

LOL. It's a forum to discuss, however it seems to be the popular thing around here to cry for years about something that peeved you off even though most of the population simply don't care. That's not discussion.
Do we need to wonder why non gamers think we have no lives?
It's perfectly fine to rage about an event, or a series of gaming events when it's actually occurring, or a few months later for that grieving period. But there's a time to let go. Like everything else in life. Your type of incessant QQing is what makes these forums less then pleasant a lot of the time.
Stop treating game devs like your ex girlfriend that slept with your best friend behind your back. These are people making a living, like we are, yes they make horrible mistakes sometimes which may involve lying or misleading however it's not going to do anyone any good to keep raging for a milennia about something that is long past. Now if these people keep doing it over and over, then sure give them a hard time. But in this case things have changed quite a bit, the dust has settled and so on.
By moving on I mean go and discuss a game you actually LIKE, how novel of an idea, I know.

ahh ok....sorry....i thought you worte that SOE developed the game not sigil.
if you're looking for a new one, check www.mortalonline.com
i myself really like the concept, we'll see how it will end up.
comming summer 2009 they state, and they are still on schedule.
Yea yea... for how many years have we been waiting for the "next" great mmo?
Yep Mortal looks great. Coming this summer you say? That's a couple months away. Is there any sign of a beta?
Fallen Earth looks very promising too, currently in closed beta they said they'd release in Q2 2009 but people are expecting Q4.
(,,,)=^__^=(,,,)
Yep that's also one to watch out for. Good, there's still some hope for 2009
ahh ok....sorry....i thought you worte that SOE developed the game not sigil.
Damnit, how am I supposed to flame you after THAT????
