So, the game that most (including myself) thought would never actually release has 'released', finally. How is it? I haven't played it. I have, however, read a ton of negative posts about 1) account creation, 2) billing, 3) technical issues (CTD's), etc.,... I'm not going to say that those issues aren't important (because they are), but they are somewhat 'normal', imho. How is the gameplay? Is it the earth-shattering, life-evolving, MMORPG-landscape changing game that we were all told it would be? Or, is it still too early to tell if this game is 'great' or 'just another new game you'll play for 30-90 days before leaving'?
There are lot of issues with preorde ,account management , still crappy communication by devs etc.
But the game itself is damn good.Full loot pvp changes the dynamics of the game
The client has never crashed not even once .I have a steady connection at 150 ms no problems even if there are 50 to 60 people in the same area
The landscape is huge it does take time to get location to location.mobs are sparse altoughthe AI is not dumb it reacts very nicely to what you do
the best part is PVP u always have to watch your back always.
There are people who jump in front of you so u hit them accidentely and change your alignment.
Today I saw a new one 2 friends started a fight , 1 turned grey so I went to kill him every time i tried the othr blue guy used to jump in front of my attack , they wantd me to accidentely turn grey so they could kill me without penalties
Also you find some tim players hiding on top of the trees ( 1 would be me ) attcking thru leaves and it takes a while to figure outwhere they are from
the crafting system is in depth but expensive at the moment.
You ever know the guy next to u how strong he is tillu pick up a fight,he could be a good crafter with the best of armors to deter u but his fighting skills could be crap or he would b but naked but has maxd out on fighting skills and will hand your arse back to u
try thegame for yourself and decide
Wow that jumping in front of people thing sounds pretty lame. Does that happen a lot?
No, plus even if they do, just wait 10 seconds, and your clean it doesn't affect your actual alignment unless you kill or gank them and they choose not to forgive you. I've accidentally hit people while trying to help them, and they look at me for a sec, I say "sorry I was trying to help" and I get a "Thanks I would have totally died" by that time im not rogue anymore.
I've died and been picked up several times by all different people. I've also tried to pick someone else up, and got killed by their killer. He covered my stuff until I came back.
Really...it's amazing. You always have the douces. But in general people will help A lot.
I have heard the game is nice. Kinda like a giant battleground. Think he may be a nice diversion part time MMO. But with the company behind it people should think twice before supporting them.
Thats the dumbest thing I ever heard. Yes the game is nice, in fact, it is exceptional. So why should you think twice before supporting the company who delivered the game? Because not everyone can play because they are too small to handle the demand and they got sold on a lousy account management system? What are people only supposed to support the big companies that can afford to put a ton of resources into launching a game that has not produced any revenue? Give me a break, the game is worth $50 and $15/month even if you have to wait 2 weeks after launch to play it.
I have played it for two months. And its the first time since SWG i have been seriously hooked on a MMO. WoW, LOTRO, AoC, WAR did just pass me without me even looking twice because i thought the gameplay looked horrible. Darkfall is not perfect, but if you want FFAPvP, sandbox gameplay, mounted combat, naval combat and no clesses and levels.....you should try DF. Seriously. And dont listen to the ones that havent tryed it.
Edit: This is one of my favourite DF videos, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMNXafzbazQ&feature=related Nothing special really, just some people putting a small raft into the water and sails off. No quest involved, just pure lust to see what will happen! A bunch of friends fooling around as they sail! And for me, that shows the potential for darkfall. Think when they have a big war ship with 50 people on it! lol
I have to say, that is a great vid. I've always lamented the lack of naval combat in complement with a strong standard core.
Right now it's pretty much a giant arena with RPG flavour, but I think we should wait at least 2-3 weeks, or even better the first billing cycle, to say if it will shine or fail.
I think that both fanbois and doom-and-gloomers should really cut the BS, the game is flawed and bugged in many respects, but it has lots of potential: time will tell.
I pretty much suck at PvP compared to most people but I still love the hell out of this game. Its hard to go to sleep after turning it off. The game is a complete rush. I will caution anyone thinking about getting this game. If you can't handle getting your ass beat and your nose rubbed in your own feces once and awhile, or alot sometimes, than don't get this game and start crying about it. You will be punished, but you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and learn from your weaknesses and mistakes and move on. Don't get offended because someone commits violence against your character and don't get attached to the new shiny suit of armor you purchased or looted off mobs and you will be fine. Just don't take anything personal and look at other players as very difficult mob AI.
I like it because you are always in imminent danger. You are never safe even in the starter cities with laser zapping guard towers. This game and the people in it can be beautifully cruel and/or friendly. I think its the best game by far since AC- Darktide and probably even better if they don't water it down to carebear land.
It's a big PVP arena, if you like that.... go for it. As a sandbox game is very lacking, not much to do besides PVP and exploring a too empty world.
This is what bugs me.
As a lot of you I am a fan of PvP games (full loot or not is a secondary thing for me) and Sandbox systems but if the non-fighting part is not engaging I end up tired of games soon because I need variety. Somedays I feel like killing every kitten I come across merciless and other days I just want to craft in peace or look for furniture for my home (I know it is not there, was an example).
Right now, by the reviews I have read, looks like the fighting part is somewhat engaging (I am a bit skeptic until I try though, looks to me little Skill customization between people by now) but everything else is not there or looks subpar (don't take this as an attack, just stating the obvious).
Well, not being in a hurry, I will wait until Subscription thing gets stable or even a month (or two) down the road too see how they improve the game in the non PvP aspect.
Some people can find this strange, but a lot of Sandbox lovers (mostly ex UO and SWG) are there because all the other things Sandbox games offer, not just player combat. For some of us, FFA Full loot it is just another feature as important as the rest (like a good crafting system for example) and not the driving force that makes us decide if a game it is worth playing or not.

well, we still have 50% of our guild still waiting just to purchase & get into the game.
i'm not that into it but i don't think the crafting system is too bad - it's more or less the same as every other MMO, but with the major positive that you can craft anything & everything in the game. maybe someone more into crafting can comment more.
IMO harvesting is the worst non-combat issue DF has, it's dull & repetitive, and just begging to be macroed. it's probably fine while the world is being built & populated, but long-term i reckon they have to tweak that.

I don't think 5 days is enough to say anything.

Addictive.
Graphics are a bit crap atm, but thats mainly cos I aint tweaked with the settings yet.
But it seems like a very open ended game with a hell of a lot of options.
WoW nerds beware, I come equipped with lazers and anti-QQ missiles. If you mess with me, I will $%£@ you.
