Hello, I am taking a Globalization class this semester to fulfill one of my geography reqs, and I have decided to give a quick brief about mmo's and how they relate to, or fuel globalization.
What would you guys think the most important aspects/ points I should cover? they can be both positive and negative, as I want to probably include both.
So far I was going to talk about the celebration of playing video games with ppl from all over the world, establishing communites/friendships/ even enemies. - shrinking the world into a virtual world.
Also thought it would be very viable to talk about RMT and how China is a player as well as other countries that set up rmt gigs - and identify the consumers who take part in this as well.
maybe even touch on east vs west style and possible integration of these two in the future?
what are some ideas you fine folks have that you could throw in the mix?

You could talk about gold farmers and rich but stupid people in rich countries illegally buying virtual goods from people in poor countries.
Most MMO players are split into regions. This is even enforced by IP addresses for some games. So the globalisation in MMOs isn't really there yet.
Then you have the huge language barrier. That's really the only remaining obstacle in this Internet age. Text language translators are getting better though, I've been able to read forums in other languages.
I've been in guilds with people from all over the world, who speak English, and it's not really a big deal. I'm a computer programmer and 75% of my coworkers are from other countries.
I think it's great that we have a diversity in cultures and I hope we don't lose that.

That's a great idea. I would love to learn Japanese that way.
While this would be a great idea if the language barrier could be broken. However it tends to have a flaw. The flaw comes when everyone is playing on the samer server often times people from certain cultures join together just like in real life. This usually then develops into extreme levels of racism, this is due too the fact that the reprocutions for such acts are relatively minor. If you look at just about any game that allows everyone to play on one server (regardless of location) this tends to happen.

I don't know about globalization, but here's an early Diablo II player killer clan that didn't like Korean players very much. It might be useful to show some of the backlash against globalization in online games:
