Kind of depends on how you plan to play him down the road i.e. concentrating on smuggling, pistols or melee.
But at the point you're at now I'd say put points into boosting your various abilities; Con, Health etc.... and the extra armor; hidden, lined pockets etc.... Those are always a good base as they'll help keep you alive.

im going with ranged combat but the pistol i have from a quest is not all that powerfull .can i buy a better pistol from a weapons trader or is my character at level 18 to low. and you know these ranged augaments that you pick up i guess you add them to your weapon but i dont know how or at what level i can use them' or do i just sell them to a trader. thank all.
Ahhh yes, forgot about the downside of ranged combat at low levels. Pistols suck, not as bad as they used to but compared to rifles etc... aren't as good until you get higher up.
What you get from the quests is always on the low end so yes, go to a bazaar terminal, click vendor search, all universe and then use the weapons>pistols block to sort. If you click on the price column it will put it in low to high order which is a big help. After that be perpared to spend a while sorting through the lists.
The weapon enhancements you loot are pretty much all over the place so you're probably better off saving the 20 credits it would cost to post them on the bazaar. Unless you find a weaponssmith that doesn't like to leave his house and sell them directly to him I think they're kind of worthless and actually aren't sure if you can de-contruct a pistol to use them or if only weaponsmith's can.

Hey there, browncoat300!
Smuggler is my favourite Combat Profession, good choice.
When it comes to weapons when levelling up, the weapons you get from Quests and as rewards for just levelling up are superior to crafted weapons until you hit level 72 when Munitions Traders can craft you weapons that use Advanced Cores.
Check out the official Smuggler forum for more info.
so what is the use of crafted weapons up until level 72 i wonder... ?
munition traders start their trade at level 72?
It's a design flaw from the last munitions revamp. Too much focus was put on high end weaponary and not enough on levelling up.
I've levelled toons to 90 with a level 54 Jawa Ion Pistol and a cl64 Hammer of the Miner before, wasn't much reason to change it for something else until I hit 90.

i dont know how you can say this with a straight face.
they made a whole update to revamp one profession and they "forgot" it had 90 levels? no one in the QA department spotted this during in TC?
the whole nge is a design flaw, and you macro levelled with your jawa pistol and them forrest in kashyyyk, but new players are unaware of that.
ok so im stuck with the pistol's i get from the main quest untill i level up to 70's when i can buy better weapons from crafter's.thanks Nebless Badgersmaker and Hozloff for your help (better get grinding).
Certainly not, I formed groups of eight players who were similar level to me and we ran COMPNOR missions and quests together, it's the fastest and most fun way to level.
Well I don't know if it's that bad, just never paid to close attention to pistols when I was a lower level. I'd get a rifle, do a 1 shot to pull targets to me and then go melee weapon on them. Can't hurt to do the bazaar search and if you have the credits buy the weapons you want later, now.
A good way to level cuz it does take into account your level and the weapon you have is to do the terminal missions, either faction or general. If you do the one's from the general mission terminals, stick to fighting people. They take a lot less time and are easier than trying to blow up animal nests and stuff. My wife is leveling her toon up that way, do 10 a day (max you can do) and then she goes and RP's.
I'm doing the same with my commando, usually get 2 levels out of it a day, sometimes I have to throw in one of the Legacy one's to get all the way over to the 2nd level, but I'm working above it's level so those are a walk through. I've gone from 32 to 48 now in a week only playing 1 1/2-2 hrs a night.
