Stargate SG-1 or Stargate Atlantis?

SnaddySnaddy Member Posts: 3

I was just wondering what everyone else thought about Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis.

Which do you prefer?

In my opinion I prefer Stargate SG-1 because there was more detail in it and plots seemed to be more complex of that to Atlantis all though Atlantis has had quite a few suprising twists in it. I think that Atlantis appeals more to the younger generation because its more modern and high tech but SG-1 can never be beaten.

What did you think of the movies?

Reaction to Atlantis being cancelled?

Do you think the game will live up to expectations?

Thanks if you put the effort into answering this pretty random thread, I was bored and wanted to see other peoples opinions.

I prefer SG-1 to Atlantis, though I haven't seen all episodes of either series. I found that Atlantis contained only one decent character (the fat scientist bloke), the rest were very bland and boring characters. The only shaggable women in Atlantis was the one in charge, and the bloke in charge (Sheppard I think) looked more like some pretty boy in his twenties than an actual Major (maybe just an airforce ting?). Also the tough guy in Atlantis looked more at home in some gay bar making eyes at Sheppard from accross a smoky bar. The leather trousers, baby eyes and soft voice were just too much! Watching a wraith slobering like some cheap alien/freddy hybrid was slightly amusing for about 10 seconds. It just was more amusing than scary and more scary than convincing and more convincing than interesting and it was only slightly amusing for 10 seconds, once, if that!

However SG-1 was good, though haven't seen it with Ben Browder in yet, except for the ark of truth movie which was OK and nice to see some new totty in there also! All shows need some shaggability! But I liked SG-1 and Atlantis sucked, to be fair to Atlantis I've only seen a few episodes which kept my attention for 5 mins at most.

I don't believe SGW will make it to launch, it has a known con artist at the helm and he's running it into the ground ASAP. They have a good DEV team which actually turns it into a tragedy, pity that SG-1 can't gate in to save the day and spare the Earth from the Goa'uld threat!

    My answers:

    Which do you prefer?

Atlantis was a good show, but SG-1 was far, far better.

What did you think of the movies?

All of them, including the original, were good movies.

    Reaction to Atlantis being cancelled?

Since the result is a new series, I think that was a good decision. The problem with Atlantis, was that it seemed they ran out of good ideas for new plots. And for me, a couple of actors harmed the show more than anything, ie Jewel Staite, which imo is an actress completely without talents.

Do you think the game will live up to expectations?

Depends on what you mean with "expectations". When I heard about this game the first time, I was exited and was looking forward to it. But after seeing a couple of videos and other footage, it's obvious it won't suit my tastes. So if the game sucks, then it would live up to my current expectatations.

I always felt that SG-A didn't develop characters well.  Actually, they just couldn't with all the turnover in characters.  SG-1 was able to take the same characters from day one and develop them together for years.  The core of the team remained, for the most part, until RDA "retired."  So, although SG-1's plots might have been a little slow at times in the early years, some of the last season episodes may have lacked the earlier development, overall it was a better show.  Not just because SG-1 lasted longer, but because it developed it's cast much better.

I own the movies and like them.  I don't feel a need to rave about them, but I enjoy them and feel the producers met the intent of the movies satisfactorily for a fan like myself.  Plus they are pretty fun to watch.

I am disappointed that Atlantis got cancelled.  Although I didn't find it as good as SG-1, I did like the show.  The setup of the new series (SG Universe) is leading me to believe I am going to be disappointed the same as I was with ST Enterprise and Voyager.

I can say emphatically that the game will not live up to expectations.  Not because I am a beta tester, but because I cannot think of a major IP mmo since WoW that has lived up to it's own hype.  It does not matter if SG:W is excellent from a gameplay perspective, I just don't see any game developer living up to hype as long as there are 11 million WoW players trying a new game and returning to WoW professing the other games suck.

I do prefer SG-1 over SGA, i've seen the entire series of SG-1 and have seen and good number of SGA episodes and found it to be a good series so far, i never really got into Atlantis that much but i still like it and i own all the DVD's of SG-1 and SGA now. In my personal opinion though i think SG-1 was probably the best TV series ever created.

What did you think of the movies?

I love the movies The Ark of Truth being my favorite out of the two, they did an amazing job with them, and cant wait to see the Atlantis movie, when they bring it out.

    Reaction to Atlantis being cancelled?

From what i've seen from Atlantis, i think it was time for it to go because characters did come and go and the whole wraith thing had become a bit boring.

Do you think the game will live up to expectations?

I like what i have seen from the game so far, but all these situations that keep popping up with all the companies involved with the game im afraid the game will be changed from what i've seen so far and will jsut wind up disappointing me in the end.

SG1 is better than SGA, although I still enjoy Atlantis. Actually I think both series have lore problems, the Goa'uld (i looked up the spelling) should of numbered in their billions given the number of infants (yeah they ate a few but not enough to keep the population in check), while the wraith just seemed a bit 'space-vampires', although they generally made more sense. That sad geek comment aside, I like them both although I accept the comments about Atlantis not really having the character development apart from (the fat scientist) Rodney (although he was introduced in SG1).

The films were good, but being a fan waiting for my next fix made it easier I'm sure.

The original film was excellent and was the reason I started watching the series, it took me a couple of attempts to get into it but the first series was trying just hard enough for it to work, if the last couple of series that RDA did had of been the first... I doubt I'd of bothered (much like him).

As for the game.... we'll see.

Actually I was thinking (before they announced the game) that they could do an SG game based around the Harlan Andriods (S1,ep19 "Tin Man" and S4,ep87 "Double Jeopardy"). The SGC would benefit from a greater number of 'stronger' troops while harlan would get more company to look after his city. Also this would explain how you could respawn (harlan simply makes another copy) and the ability to chat (internal comms), it would also allow multiple copies of the same characters to be encounterd... hence you could work with the 'heroes' from the show... just a thought.

Edit: just re-read my post and decided it sounded too negative.... so thought I'd add... yeah loved the shows.

Personally, I think the whole Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis were and are very good. Plus I would love for them to keep on making Atlantis, sure some may not like it or claim there is flaws, but its the overall world/sci-fi part of it that keeps me very interested.
From what I have seen of the actual game, it doesn't seem all to bad, taking cover, fighting/strategizing with your friends, and not to mention the very frequent updates for content, level cap and more (so I've heard) seem good in my books. Also there are talk about Atlantis being an expansion, which would be cool (the initial release will be about SG-1, I believe) but we will have to wait and see how things role, won't we?

Hopeing to give it a try at the initial release.

just to clarify that, this topic was adressed by the producer in the extra features of the dvds. that they had to do it just to make the series more user friendly and less complicated.

You mean dumbed down and easy to write.

Look at Farscape, nearly every alien race is unique, with their own alien culture and customs. The language barrier is breached with characters having "translator microbes" inplanted in the base of their brain, that allow them to understand other languages. However they developed even further to adress extremely advanced species (such as Pilot's) that in their native tongue can't even be translated or comprehended by lesser minds.

Sadly Farscape was canceled, the show was to expensive to make, and wasn't "user friendly" enough for your average simpleton.

Now on Stargate, they travels to planets in other galaxies and comes across late 1800's style american farmers!!!

    Lets compare aliens!!

    Stargate:

    And now, Farscape aliens.

    Farscape:

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE stargate (I've seen every episode of SG1 and most of Atlantis). However, I will admit the lameness stargate so often bleeds.

i get your point with the old school american farmers but if you said you have seen all the episodes you should know that the human race was "imported" from MANY other worlds and we are just cousins that have developed at different speeds. honestly it is not surprising that they would create similar technologies. but yeah they could have done more efforts in some species.

SG atlantis was populated by the ancients (who came to our galaxy) the humans are the 2nd evolution of the ancients. so it is not that far fetched that there are humanoids all over.

Yes, everything you said is true. However look at earth; We have 1000s of different races and cultures. A few 100 miles in any direction on earth can mean a VAST change in culture. Yeah they do go outside the box and show some pretty neat cultures in stargate (like the Nox). However, I feel they avoid showing anything to complicated. Maybe this is due to the budget, or just pure lazyness.. But I would have really loved it if they spent more time on the truely sci-fi and alien races like the Furlings. One alien race on stargate wore Flecktarn (german military camo), and another carried AK-47s... Hell I even saw a space pirate with a WWII Luger!

In particular, language gets to be a very tiring barrier to stories. OK, SG just glossed over it. But most other SF stories that don't do so use some pretty fantastic mechanisms: universal translators, translator microbes, mystical translation (e.g. it has been said that in Dr. Who, the ability to understand languages is a gift of the Time Lords/TARDIS). The only scheme that makes some sort of sense is having a "universal" language, and for that, you need cultures that are in constant contact so that such develops.

You can't get very far in a lot of stories if you can't communicate. Sure, this works for a while, but look at Star Trek: Enterprise. The language barrier can only be a central theme for so many stories, and then it's worn out its welcome. Learning a language that is completely foreign in structure, sounds, roots, etc. would take months to even get close to being able to talk, and that presupposes that the grammar is similar.

well, selek, like you said, it must be the budget

farscape became to expensive and it got closed down but stargate is still going.

but yeah the Genii LOL that is funny their weapons are very similar, (almost identical) to what we have/had here on earth

Atlantis by far, but maybe thats just because I saw it before SG1. I liked all of the characters in Atlantis and really only one SG1 - Teal'c.

I thought the concept of the SGA team being stuck in another galaxy and unable to return for season 1 was interesting. When SGA went out on a mission they come back "home" to a city that has been under water for the last trillion years.

I also liked the Wraith more than all of the enemies in SG1. Its too bad that both shows did not continue simultaneously so that we could have gotten some plots intertwined - specifically I would like to have seen the Wraith and the Goa'uld/Apophis have a big confrontation or have a big three way with the Ori.

I am really afraid their new "direction"with SGU will blow up in their faces, but in the end I want it to do well because more success means more Stargate in the future.

Oh well, my show is gone now and all I can hope for is some Atlantis movies. :(

((Actually I am very pissed Atlantis is cancelled, but I am trying to be nice here.)) ;)
