I played RoM for nearly 3 month and spend more money on the CS than I would have in a P2P including bying a box.
People keep telling me, I don't HAVE to spend anything in a F2P and right they are. Just like I don't HAVE to play it at all. But when I play a game, I want to have fun. That does not include that I have to sort my inventory every three seconds, so I bought backpack-space. Fun does not include to not have a mount when I need it because the two hours ran out just a few minutes ago, so I bought a permanent mount.
Fun (for me) does include to play more than one char, so I bought those things for three chars. That was the first time I realy got angry, as they are advertising on their web-side that you have one house for all your chars on one account and can use the same stuff with different chars. Not true, you have different houses and can't send bound equip (including bought mounts) to your other chars.
Adding to that, I bought some potions here, some equip-pimp-stuff there, not too much, but it added up quite a bit. I went along with it for a while, because I DO know that a company needs to make money out of their product and I am willing to pay for the fun I have. As long as it is reasonable.
Than they brought in a new mini-game I really liked. You can play it once a day and it lasts 10 minutes. It was really fun for me. Just a few days later, they made it a LOT harder with a patch and I found out that you can have it without the hardship by buying a potion in the CS. For around 50 cent. I really was stunned: 50 cent for 10 minutes of gameplay! They must be kidding me.
At that point I decided that the publisher is too greedy for my liking and left.

MMOs as a whole are expensive why? cause the time you spent playing you could have been out there putting more hours in your work to move up or getting a second job or even taking classes in community college.
Hilarious. Beacuse it's true. I'm thinking amout going to MMO-ANON meetings perseonally.
Cash shops are a joke.
There are two kinds of people in this world. People who pick their nose.. and liars.
I can see where it all would start to add up pretty quick.
Some folks probably manage to get buy w/o making purchases, but I can see where the temptation would be strong to take the shortcuts.

I am new to RoM, (14k/14W) If I am still playing it after 2 months I will most likely buy 30$ worth of dimonds and aprox 10$ a month after that thats less than what id pay for a P2P. I wont go over anymore than that. The way I figure is if I am enjoying playing I have no problem supporting the company, I actuall feel that I should support them, if im having fun. And of course theres people out there thats addicted to cash shops and buy buy buy. Need to set you a limit.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)

So let's talk dollars and sense (pun intended) here...
Diamonds can be bought in various increments but I'll use the 500/$22 (US) option for this list. That works out to be ~4.4 cents per diamond.
Perma mount: 199 diamonds = $8.76
1 month extra inventory bag rental: 22 diamonds = $0.97
Not all that expensive if you ask me.
I realize the mounts are cheaper now than when you bought them, so I sympathize with you there, however new people to the game need to realize what they pay today is less.
But wait, I want the War horse, almost 400 diamonds for the permanent option. I want a lot more than one extra inventory bag, I want all 5, and I want them for 6 months....and dont forget my house inventory, it has same time rental slots.
Oh yes, I want a pet, those cost diamonds. Hey, I just came across a cool looking quest. Quest giver tells me its real hard, and for only xx diamonds he'll make it easier for me.
And I'm on the PVP server, and while its nice I can't drop my cash shop items, I do have some really good ingame armor and weapons I'd hate to drop, and look, I can insure them against dropping for only xx diamonds.
On and on it goes, and I can easily spending that $22.00 and then some on this game every month, especially starting out when expenses would be the highest.
I'm not saying I even mind, the idea of buying an advantage appeals to me, since I don't have the time to play like others, but I certainly can see where ROM might be one of the more expensive microtransaction games out there.
(and although only level 9, I can see where it will be a real advanatage to spend diamonds to get to the top)

LOL!
I hope to God you live with your mother, dude, or that you are insanely rich person, because with that lifestyle you'll certainly not be ble to pay for the house-rent, car, food, clothes, sextoys and all the other bare neccesities in our very troubled society!
But they still pay one mount for each char they play, if they want their twinks to have a mount too.
As I said, for a while I went along with the prize. But when I have to pay extra for each and every small part of the game I might want to enjoy... well, I don't enjoy it any more.
Of course, if you happen to prefer the free parts of the game and your needs are satisfied with those... great for you.
For me it didn't work out that way. The extra-cost for this and that added up to much more than I am willing to pay for a game (and that already is more than a p2p usually costs).
Congrats you fell into the cash shop trap.
You really have to be able to manage your spending, like anything in any other real world spending. Maybe you should thank RoM for teaching you an important life lesson. I probably sound really flipplant there and that's not the intention but there is truth to it.
This is why I am against cash shops in P2P games as it's milking the cow and chopping it's head off for dinner too, but in a F2P environment there's nothing wrong with it and people will have to learn to budgetize to keep their wallets healthy. I won't blame the game or the devs they need to eat just like the rest of us.

Yes you do.
Hmmm . . . from the responses I've read, I gather that you should have been doing something better than playing mmo's, e.g., getting a 2nd job, better educating yourself, and you need to set yourself a spedning limit lest you rank deeper among the cash-shop addicted, weak-willed players. The company milked you (and I assume you are a guy, so that brings out some sexual innuendo merely since I have a gutter mind) and beheaded you since you aren't able to budget and keep a healthy wallet.
Oh, the flippancy thing is there too. Well, that's the TLDR version for people that come in late to this thread. Cheers.
Keep in mind, its still beta, but the full release is coming very soon!
Maybe then they will fix/patch all the small known problems like the house and other things you have said.
I personally think its not all to bad, my major turn off is the dual class thing, its like trying to train two characters inside one person, frustrating to me.
The very reason I stay well clear of any cash shop game, some people will say "you dont have to buy anything"while this is maybe true you wont be at the same level as others that do buy items,or indeed be able to enjoy everything they do.
Stick with the p2p model,at least you know what is going on your visa card every month and you have the whole game at your mercy,I think the OP hit the nail on the head with the last bit of his post, when these companies see you paying for things they will just add more and more to get as much cash from you as possible.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

This game is pretty chill for me. I used to play Silkroad Online and i gotta admit this is a pretty good step up from that game. I havent spend any money on it, and if i ever do it will probably just be for a mount, but other then that u can still get by the game without having to make any purchases , unless you're lazy of course. So with that said, im enjoying RoM quite a bit, only thing i hope they improve on is say more races and classes
And you know, it makes you wonder why they released the cash shop in beta if they were to adjust things in it. Yes let's test the cash shop with people's money... ?
O.o Seems strange to me.
ps. I'm saying that because someone posted earlier they actually changed some of the fees..

So basically, Diamonds in RoM= Gold in other games?
If so, there does not seem to be any negative connotation with "goldbuying" direct from a company as opposed to goldbuying from a farmer.
I always wondered why some people have no qualms about purchasing gold in a cash shop game, but absolutely go bonkers when someone else buys gold in a P2P game.
Very strange.
**For the record, I'm against both forms of goldbuying personally; but if someone does it, that's their business. I always just laughed at the change in attitude when goldbuying is "legit".
"TO MICHAEL!"
You know that saying, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is"? Well, it's true. This is just one case of it. The most expensive games are advertised as "free to play". And if you think a game is expensive now, just wait until you get high level.
A lot of people who play a "free to play"/item mall game will never pay anything. In order to get adequate revenue, companies have to get a handful of players to pay quite a lot. And so they do.
And this game is still officially in beta. Just wait until you see what they add after the official release.
That's because in third party RMT the money doesn't go to the game entirely but to someone else's pockets. They are making profit of something that does not belong to them. It's like renting a boat from a company for X dollars and then renting it out for more money to other people... I guess. ^_^
F2P have no other way to make money for themselves and they can't or won't charge a monthly fee as those games would not 'sell' very much at all if they did.

They release the cash shop in EVERY F2P game with one in it during beta. Some games, like Perfect World, ran for an extremely long time in "beta" while having the cash shop working. I played that on the Maylasian server long before the official "release" and people were buying up stuff left/right. (Mostly the Chinese players) One thing that's always guaranteed "working as intended" in a beta F2P game, is the cash shop and Visa pay options; game bugs be damned.
I believe it's really just how they pay for the development of the game, and to gauge what to expect as a montly revenue flow. I don't think they declare it "fixed" and release it until they accrue a certain amount of cash from the beta cash shops, lol.

This part I do understand.. the company objects for solid reasons.
But I never understood why a gamer could buy it in one sphere and someone say its "cheating", then go to another one and buy gold themselves, and say its "fair". They migh argue that in a F2P game, its all even because everyone has the chance to buy the same things from the shop... but the same can be said for a P2P game's goldseller. Everyone also has the same opportunity to improve their guy the same way, from the same sellers.
I just get a kick out of the moral line shift and the outrage that usually accompanies it, is all.

The annoying part of RoM model is the item mall is in game and it is bugging you to spend money. You have to keep calculationg how much things cost in RL money and if it is reasonable. Mount sounds OK, upgrading piece of gear too... but what about full equip, is it still reasonale? How much does a house really cost you? Doing this under peer pressure is not easy on most people.
You are playing game to escape this kind of calculations. I very much prefer if the game keeps the item shop and gameplay separate and also if it keeps the amount of items reasonable. RoM has long list of redunatnt and mostly unapppealing items (unpappealing until you get pressured).
Also, F2P games can implement features that are detrimental to game experience in order to increase your spendings. In Rom this is very apparent. XP pots are F2P staples but RoM has low XP from regular mob grind and at the same time low amount of quests for more than half of levelling (time-wise, levels are just arbitrary dividers), so you find yourself with nothing to do if you plan to play whole sunday unless you spend cash. Then you have XP debt which i have nothing against untill you realize it is easy to circumvent via cash shop and unnecessarily painfull due to strict daily quota of XP gain. And then you gear transmutation, great cash shop idea of how to sell OP gear without actually selling it, leading to piles of gear clutering your inventory, people rolling on everything, top players dressed in unappealing rags despite awesome stats and gear binding mechanic not really working.
This is the real issue with F2P - it can make good games into bad unless kept in check by publishers themselves. And also the same issue with goldselling - it can harm games despite good devs intentions.
The key to a F2P game for those spending is you have to figure what's the average you'd pay for a P2P game, then go UNDER that.
Breaking even and spending just as much as you'd spend on a normal MMO is a fail, unless the game is giving you what typically a P2P game gives.. better support, better graphics, better questing and much more content. If you are paying $15 for both, but playing a F2P you're probably getting ripped off.
To make a F2P worthwhile, $10 or less a month would seem reasonable. Otherwise, why pay almost as much for inferior (generally) quality? It's like buying No-Frills store brands Vs. national brands. If the price is exactly the same, why buy crappier stuff? It has to come in way under to be worth the sacrifice to me personally.
But if you measure value in something thats new, so you don't mind paying for less features, then spending the same amount in the cash shop is a personal choice.

The cash shop is a bit expensive and constantly changing. But I have to add that ROM does let you buy certain item shop items with tokens you get from daily's and they are now gonna start having items shop items in drops. I am pretty impressed with the game, People complain that others get ahead cause they will spend on cash shop. I say well they should cause they are paying to keep the game going, and for you even with the whining to be able to play for free. It is very easy to overspend, but also whoever buys in the item mall during a beta phase has to at least be wise enough to understand that all items are changable and prices will vary. If you are gonna spend money for diamonds your best bet is to wait for release, as new classes items mounts ect are to be added as well as price changes.
You bought something to make more than one character? Ive made 2 so far for free. Unless i missread what you typed you got ripped off.
No, he (she?) was saying that he bought stuff for more than 1 character. Character creation is free (of course).
Now back to the topic: I'm sorry, but if you're willing to spend real cash for multiple characters during the game's OB, you either have too much cash to spend on meaningless stuff (MMOs fall in this category IMO because you're paying real money for a bunch of pixels, hehe) or you lack some common sense. Before starting to pay real money make sure you like the game (so you'd be playing it for an extended period of time) and you love your character. Otherwise it's just a waste of time, money and energy. Unless you're close to lvl cap (which is currently 50) it's pointless to spend real money on CS stuff, apart maybe for a perma mount (but since new mounts are to be added I'd still wait a bit more for such a purchase). Yes, the CS will help you in building a very good gear set, but like I said, it's pointless if you're going to change it a few levels later; yes, you can buy some resets (including the dailies) but every single time the game went through a major skill/class overhaul we got free resets anyway...so really, there's no need for real cash spending until you learn how to play the game and what do you need in order to build a good character (so you'd be spending money for a specific purpose).
Everything in this world (be it virtual or real) comes with a price - don't complain about something you weren't forced into (cosmetics, mounts, this is not mandatory end game stuff).
